Don en Rico’s Tender Juicy Championship

Don Allado and Rico Maierhofer, former Green Archer stars of different eras teamed up to help Purefoods win its nth PBA All-Filipino championship today via a sweep over the hardluck Alaska team. The two guys are born winners, having won multiple titles in the UAAP and the PBL.

Don, a two-time UAAP MVP and champion, was acquired by Purefoods last year and provided solid support to the more established big men in the team. Now on his 10th season as a pro, it seems that he has found a home at Purefoods.

For Rico, his pro career is just about to take-off. The second overall pick in this season’s draft, he is truly a prized catch. His overall intensity and play fits the team’s run-and-gun offense. He is currently one of the leaders for the top rookie award.

Such faith the coaching staff of Purefoods has with these two that they decided to let go of several key players during the off-season. It pays to have players who know what it takes to be a champion. Talk about instant results.

Former Green Archer standout Rico Maierhofer is the current frontrunner for the coveted top freshman award. The high-flying beanpole played 4 years for the green and white squad and graduated from his college degree last June. Chosen 2nd overall by Purefoods in the PBA draft, Rico leads all neophytes in the statistical race with averages of 8.0 points, 5.8 rebounds and 1.1 blocks.

Just like many former Green Archers before him, Rico is making instant waves in just his first season in the professional level.

Even the 1st overall pick, who decided to remain an amateur, could only watch Rico soar above the PBA stratosphere.

Rico Maierhofer Over Time

It was announced a few days ago that Rico Maierhofer has decided to forego his final year of UAAP eligibility to turn professional. This news came as a bit of a surprise as many were expecting Rico to play out his 5th year with the Archers and be the main catalyst for the team especially with the departure of JV Casio.

Call it fate as to how Rico got discovered 7 years ago. While dining at the restaurant of the family-owned Tropicana Castle resort at the celebrated Puerto Galera beaches in the island of Mindoro, He was mysteriously approached by a vacationing La Salle alumnus and asked whether he wanted to try out for the De La Salle Green Archers in Manila.

A late bloomer, Maierhofer discovered his wares for basketball only in third year high school back in Puerto Galera Academy, though he has always had the height since he was young. He used to play volleyball before realizing that he could make good use of his height better in basketball.

Rico’s height proved to be enough for the La Salle alumnus to be convinced that he could become a Green Archer. An invite was sent and Rico was accompanied by his mother and cousin to come to Manila for a try-out. Coach Franz was very much impressed and decided to take him in.

Rico would have made the cut in his freshman year back in 2003 if not for the injury he sustained prior the start of the UAAP. A hyper-extended knee after an attempted dunk shot during one practice game dashed his hopes of playing that season. After a year of strengthening and recovery, Maierhofer finally debuted as a Green Archer in 2004.

For 4 seasons we have become witness to Rico’s high flying act and defensive prowess on the hard court. We thank Rico for his valuable contributions to the team during his stay and also congratulate him for this forthcoming graduation this June. We wish him all the best in his career.

.... and this was his OFFICIAL last performance as part of the team =)

Just For Kicks!: Green Archer Celebrity Lookalikes

    Posted by green_gossip

lookalike_ferdinand

The movie star good looks of the Green Archers have catapulted their popularity from league favorites to full celebrity status, attracting fans even from rival schools and kibitzers from outside the league. Proof is in media attention-magazine covers and big advertisement contracts started long before pre-season, with sporting giants cashing in on the success and commercially viable good looks of season 70's surprise champs. Sophomore playmaker Simon Atkins and star point guard JV Casio are in fashion mags and billboards. Basking in their share of the limelight are multinationals Bader Malabes, PJ Walsham and Rico Maierhofer, with the last one starring in a full-length TV commercial for a major sports brand. It appears an unofficial tradition for DLSU Green Archers to score high in the looks department with its long line of basketball celebrities---Maoi Roca, Mon Jose, BJ Manalo, Dominic Uy, Mike Cortez, Jason Webb, Luigi Trillo, Lago Brothers, among others. This year, the men's basketball team obviously, if inadvertently, maintains the tradition by having members who are deadringers of TV and film stars. Decide for yourselves if it's a hit or a miss for these stellar match-ups:

Rico Maierhofer is sometimes incredible in the spectacular moves he makes, but can he pass as an alter ego to the actor who's the latest to play the Incredible Hulk, Edward Norton?

lookalike_rico

Lately, we have been seeing more of Ferdinand in action. Hopefully, he gets to log in more playing minutes and not be relegated to hiding in the house attic as what his lookalike, Josh Hartnett did in the vampire movie, 30 Days, 30 Nights.

lookalike_ferdinand

Shooter James Mangahas is always serious when he plays. But heck, we are not complaining because he delivers. But do you think he looks like "Signed, Sealed, Delivered" singer Blue's Simon Webbe?

lookalike_james

Maybe we'll get to see the slashing moves of sophomore Rejan Lee, after all he is not dubbed as "Little Ninja" for nothing. But can you his resemblance to Hong Kong's singing superstar Jackie Cheung, who once did a duet with Philippine's very own, Regine Velasquez

lookalike_rejan2

Rookie Maui Villanueva is playing like he's no rookie at all. This early, he is showing his basketball IQ and experience, But does he look like Pinoy Big Brother Celebrity Edition's Bodie Cruz, son of 70's movie icon and experienced actor Tirso Cruz?

lookalike_maui

We have not seen him play last year. And for the limited time he saw action for the Green Archers this season, we were witnessed to the quality minutes he gave the team. Marko Batricevic is Just like his look alike, Cillian Murphy, who played quality villain role in Batman Begins as the Scare Crow.

lookalike_marko

Bader Malabes has exploded in some games and continue to improve his defensive game. Hopefully, he gets a second crack at greatness this season, after a not so impressive performance last season, as his look alike Patrick Dempsey, who got a second crack at stardom after potraying McDreamy (?) in the hit show, Grey's Anatomy

lookalike_bader

Finally, last year's finals MVP Cholo Villanueva. He is no longer playing but he is still with the team. One more chance for Cholo to prove his special love for DLSU. That statement says it all---Cholo as John Lloyd, would you agree?

Until next time, XOXO

UAAP Season 71: Don’t you forget about Rico.

    Posted by Lesmes Solanoy
 Email This Post 2 Comments

rico-blocksAfter playing able support to the Green Archers' top gun JV Casio and rising stars James Mangahas and Peejay Barua, the 6’5 Rico Maierhofer literally stood tall in the Green Archers’ conquest of the UP Fighting Maroons, 81-61, at the UAAP Season 71 Men’s Basketball Tournament.

The Puerto Galera native and last season's Mythical Team member dominated the game from both ends of the court, scoring 19 points, including two 3-point shots, 13 rebounds, and 3 blocks, to power De La Salle to its 6th win in 8 games.

The win secured solo 2nd spot for the Green Archers.

“It’s a good thing the veterans took over the game, especially JV (Casio), James (Mangahas), PJ (Barua) and Rico Maierhofer,” remarked Coach Franz Pumaren.

Coming off the bench, Maierhofer singlehandedly carried a 10-0 offensive attack of La Salle in the first quarter which resulted into an early dozen point lead for the defending champions.

Kailangan ko magpakita ng aggressiveness at intensity, and dahil sa height advantage ko over the UP players, nakapag-deliver naman,” said the four-year veteran who says he will maximize his playing years for the team.

It was the first game in which Rico topscored for the Green Archers. In previous games, Rico would play supporting role to the gunners of De La Salle.

“I’ve been using Rico off the bench, it’s good because he’s with the younger guys and he’s been delivering. I assigned to him a specific role for this season: to be the leader of the 2nd group to stabilize the team. We’re doing okay with this system,” said Coach Franz.

True enough, before game start, Rico was seen talking in a huddle with the other big men of the team, rookies Maui Villanueva and Jovet Mendoza and sophomore Ferdinand.

Despite a strong finish in the 1st quarter, 19-9, the Green Archers slowed down in the 2nd canto and allowed the UP Fighting Maroons to score 21 points that bridged the gap to only four at the end of the first half, 34-30. But the Archers regrouped and sank four 3-point shots in the third to widen the lead anew at quarter's end, 59-48.

In the final quarter, the Archers were unrelenting, limiting the Fighting Maroons to 13 points.

DLSU’s next game is set on Saturday, Aug. 16 against the NU Bulldogs.

THE SCORES:

DLSU 81 – Maierhofer 19, Casio 17, Mangahas 16, Barua 10, Walsham 6, Villanueva 5, Revilla 5, Ferdinand 2, Malabes 1, Webb 0, Mendoza 0, Chandumal 0, Bagatsing 0, Lee 0

UP 61 – Reyes 21, Co 9, Agbayani 9, Sorongon 8, Astorga 4, Sison 4, Lopez 4, Braganza 2, Pajela 0, Marfori 0, dela Victoria 0, Hipolito 0

Quarter scoring: 19-9; 34-30; 59-48; 81-61

GAME NOTES: Appearing in public for the first time, after suffering from the head injury in the Green Archers’ game first round game against the UE Red Warriors last August 1, Simon Atkins was in civilian clothes cheering his teammates. Although he appears fine, it is clearly visible that Atkins was still favoring his neck and is careful about his movements. According to Simon, he is feeling well now,(even giving a thumbs-up sign) although he has yet to practice with the team. Coach Franz, meanwhile, is closely monitoring Atkins’ condition with the doctor and therapists, stating that he needs Atkins to be back for the team as the sophomore playmaker is crucial to DLSU’s rotation.
