Green Archers hope to rekindle their glorious past with new uniform

Many supporters were just oh so ecstatic to see the Green Archers parade their new unis that are reminiscent of those multi-titled La Salle teams back in the late 90s to early 2000s.  And boy did they sure played like the La Salle of old last Saturday, showing relentless hustle and energy at all times.

Seeing these duds again, we can’t help but remember the good ol’ days when the Archers were the most cohesive and feared defensive aggregation in college basketball. Will this rebooted version of the 4-peat uniform awaken the Animo in our team? We’ll see soon enough.

Lady Archers fall to defending champs in UAAP opener

The DLSU Lady Archers suffered a very tough loss in their season 73 opener against the defending champions and their last season’s tormentors, the Adamson Lady Falcons. The Lady Falcons wasted no time in settling this one, winning via an 84-53 rout.

The first quarter already set the tone for the match as the taller, faster and heftier Lady Falcons were simply the more aggressive and dominating team on both ends of the floor, erupting for an early 11-2 lead courtesy of the towering Annalyn Almazan, who scored 8 points on a blistering pace in the opening quarter. Aside from Almazan, Ghin Buendia also scored 9 points backed by two triples to pace the Lady Falcons on that quarter. The Lady Archers seemed a bit tentative on their movements especially on their press breaks allowing the Lady Falcons to get steals and easy points to help balloon their lead to 28-9 to end the quarter. La Salle was paced by Cass Santos with 4 points.

The second quarter became even worse for the Lady Archers as Ortega joined the fray in scoring with 6 points aside from the additional performances still by Almazan and Buendia, as they combined for 14 points. Almazan was just too strong inside the paint as she plucked almost every rebound available, allowing Adamson to convert second and third chance opportunities. Rookie Ara Abaca tried to bring back La Salle into the game by leading the Lady Archers with 6 points on the quarter but the turnovers just simply hurt them as the Lady Falcons outscored the Lady Archers, 23-14, stretching the lead to 51-23 at halftime.

The third quarter was a bit of a slowdown in scoring at the start but Kath Sandel took over the chores that Almazan and Buendia started as she controlled both ends of the floor not just in scoring but controlling the pace as the floor general of the Lady Falcons. She led the Lady Falcons in scoring with 5 points while La Salle was led by 2 points each of Wilson, Amador, Cass Santos, and Piatos. Second year point guard and last year’s rookie of the year Miller Ong was not just in her element today as she was in foul trouble early in the game and had difficulty setting up the plays due to the aggressive Adamson defense. The third quarter ended to the tune of 69-32 in favor of the Lady Falcons.

The Lady Archers showed life on the fourth quarter despite Adamson’s large lead. The Lady Archers outscored the Lady Falcons, 21-15 as Piatos and Viterbo led La Salle with 5 points each in the final canto. With Ong fouling out, Piatos proved to be a good back-up, scoring a trey on a short run to try and cut down Adamson’s lead. But Fria Bernardo had other plans as she replaced the roles of Buendia and Sandel, both of whom went out of the game due to injuries in the third and fourth quarter respectively, scoring 7 points to repulse the Lady Archers’ mini-run. The lead was just too big for the Lady Archers to overcome against an intact Lady Falcons line up, surrendering their first game of season 73.

The view from the armchair – Game 1 vs UP

    Posted by Nel

The Green Archers opened the 73rd season of the UAAP with a shocker of sorts – an 80-62 win over the UP Maroons, who this early are fancied to reach the Final 4. The win surprised many, including the tv coverage panel who had expected the more experienced UP team to pull off a win over our young Archers. Instead, the Archers led from the opening tip-off and never trailed as they finished off the stunned Maroons with a flourish.

A Great Start

Coach Dindo started with a relatively “experienced” lineup of Ferdinand, Tolentino, Webb, Atkins and Villanueva. Although first possession went to UP, the Archers served notice that their defense would be a major factor in the game as they stopped UP’s first offensive, then parlayed an interception by Tolentino into a fastbreak which netted Webb foul shots. Webb broke the ice for the season with a free throw, followed by 5 straight points from long range by Atkins 6-0. UP somewhat regained their bearings to close in at 8-7 on a Silungan trey, but Mendoza, in for Ferdinand who racked up 2 quick fouls, scored, 10-7.

Coach Dindo showed where his system differs from our team’s previous mentor, Coach Franz, by substituting early, putting in Andrada, Marata, and Vosotros with half of the quarter gone. Our press was clicking, forcing UP to eat up their shot clock just to get into shooting range, and an Atkins intercept resulted in Andrada being decked on the fastbreak by Padilla, who also attempted to rattle Yutien with some trashtalking which didn’t faze Andrada. Silungan kept it close with another 3 at 14-12, but Atkins, Paredes, and Marata combined to tow the Archers to a 19-13 lead at the end of the first period. The tenacious Archer defense only allowed Silungan to make a field goal.

The Archers threatened to break the game open at 30-21 after Atkins hit his 4th triple, but UP finished strong as Co and Silungan started hitting their shots from long range. The entry of rookie Saret late in the half breathed some life into the UP game as the  Maroons closed in at 34-31. The Green-and-White team were slightly more accurate from the field in the first half at 32% to 28%, but were outrebounded by the taller Maroons, 20-25. The active defense netted 10 turnovers which we converted into 9 points.

UP stayed within striking distance in the early part of the 3rd quarter as the Archers started slow, but a Tolentino trey, a side jumper by Villanueva, and a Webb fastbreak gave the Archers their largest lead of the game at 45-35, forcing UP to sue for time. The Maroons last threatened at 54-47 before Andrada converted on a Marata assist to end the quarter at 56-47. Silungan attempted to close off the quarter through an isolation play, but he was closely marked and missed badly.

UP opened the 4th with a Co basket, but two fastbreaks by dela Paz and Atkins restored a double digit lead which the deflated Maroons were never able to cut down. The Archers ran away from their rivals to win pulling away, in a dominating show of force in the second half where they outscored UP 46-31.

Green Archers beat Maroons to open UAAP Season 73

Winning against the veteran-laden UP Fighting Maroons is one thing, but the way the Green Archers played today was nothing less than spectacular. The team showed a renewed spirit in their initial outing this season and this certainly gives us supporters something to look forward to this season.

Team captain Simon Atkins may have perhaps played his finest game in the UAAP seniors. He waxed hot early in the match and finished with 20 points. He got able support from Maui Villanueva and Sam Marata with 13 and 10 points respectively.

The Green Archers did about everything that we thought they should do in order to win in our pregame post. They outhustled, outrunned and simply shot the lights out from the perimeter. The team dictated the tempo for most of the game and they eventually pulled away at the latter stages of the third period. The Archers forced UP into a running game which frustrated their half-court execution as they committed 21 turnovers. Rookie Mike Silungan and Woody Co paced the Maroons with 17 points apiece.

And to top off a remarkable game, the Green Archers made 65% of their free-throws. Whatever they did prior to this match, I really hope they continue to do it for the whole season. If they show the same vigor in their succeeding matches, the team can definitely compete this year.

Box Scores

DLSU 80 – Atkins 20, Villanueva, 13, Marata 10, Webb 9, Andrada 7, Dela Paz 6, Vosotros 4, Mendoza 4, Ferdinand 4, Tolentino 3, Reyes 0, Paredes 0

UP – Silungan 17, Co 17, Sison 8, Martin Reyes 6, Manuel 5, Saret 2, Padilla 2, Maniego 2, Lopez 2, Mikee Reyes 1, Juruena 0

Quarter Scores 19-13, 34-31, 56-47, 80-62

St. Benilde aims for a better showing in upcoming V-League

College of Saint Benilde seeks to perform better this time around as the Second Conference of the 7th Shakey's V-League unfolds this Sunday at The Arena in San Juan.

Coming off a quarterfinals finish the previous campaign, the Lady Blazers return with an intact lineup although the official roster released recently by the league did not list lefty LC Quemada and Zhar Velez.

The team of coach Thelma Barina-Rojas will be led by veterans Giza Yumang and Ren Agero along with Rossan Fajardo and Wena Miran.

Returning as guest player is Jennifer Manzano, who made her debut last conference. She is from sister school La Salle-Dasmarinas where she was helped the Lady Patriots win a number of NCRAA titles as well as several beach volleyball championships.

St Benilde makes its debut on Sunday against newcomer National University in the first game at 2 p.m. The Lady Bulldogs will be led by Mervic Mangui, the third leading scorer in last year's UAAP wars, and new acquisition Dindin Santiago who transferred from league powerhouse University of Santo Tomas.

Sizing Up the UAAP Opposition – Part 2

FEU Tamaraws

Aside from Adamson, the Tamaraws appear to be among the heavy favorites to win it all this year. Except for Mark Barocca, the rest of the team’s mainstays are returning, like the Smart Gilas’ players JR Cawaling and Aldrech Ramos, Reil Cervantes, Jens Knuttel, Paul Sanga and RR Garcia. Barocca’s absence won’t be entirely missed as Garcia has shown that he can already be the lead guard even in just his second year in the UAAP. They were able to recruit last year’s UAAP juniors MVP Terrence Romeo from their high school team.

The Tamaraws are well overdue for a championship. For the past three years, they have been hounded by mid-season off-court problems that disrupted their performance in the home stretch of the tournament. Barring any of these issues, FEU appears to have the best shot this season.

How do we measure up?

The Tams are fielding an almost intact lineup which has all the ingredients for a successful season, and these qualities are magnified against our Archers: experience, court savvy, great point guards, good interior players, and height. On paper, we're overmatched against FEU. However, even with a strong lineup in the past 2 years, FEU failed to reach the finals, so their mental fortitude might be suspect. If the Archers can muster that famous La Sallian fighting spirit, they may just pull off an upset.

Sizing Up the UAAP Opposition – Part 1

    Posted by GREENARCHERS.PH

We now give our own take on the other seven men’s basketball teams of UAAP Season 73. Since we are a partisan website, we won’t do any projections or predictions but rather assess how the Green Archers will measure up against them this year.

NU Bulldogs

A New coach, new talented players coming from reputable high school programs and a 6'7" Cameroonian, when it comes to all that is new, NU has got it all for you.

Carryovers Mervin Baloran, Kokoy Hermosisima and Jewel Ponferrada remain the vital cogs of the team. The biggest splash is when the Bulldogs have finally gotten a piece of the pie in the competitive high school recruitment market. When was the last time NU was considered a viable option for top junior players? To be honest I really don’t know, but pre-season rumors had them aggressively recruiting Ael Banal from Ateneo.

The Bulldogs have languished in the cellar of the league for so long but things might change this year. NU has always been know to play the spoilers role but with their reloaded roster, they will probably do more damage this season.

How do we measure up against them?

We've had issues last year with their skillful inside game, as well as their quick guards. With the addition of the Cameroonian, the battles of the boards will be critical for our run-and-gun team.
