Green Archers outclassed Red Warriors for 2nd win
Posted by GREENARCHERS.PHThe Green Archers played heads-up defense and demonstrated superb teamwork for 40 minutes as they fashioned out an 82-63 demolition job over the UE Red Warriors today. The team capitalized on UE’s shallow backcourt and inexperienced frontline to force several turnovers and botched plays. The excellent game of the Green Archers overshadowed Paul Lee’s 25-point production. He may have gotten his usual numbers but this wasn’t enough to answer La Salle’s juggernaut defense and fastbreak offense.
La Salle appeared to be the taller team in this match as Ferdinand, Maui, Yutien, and most especially rookie Papot Paredes asserted their dominance on the boards and in the paint as they limited UE’s second chance shots. Papot was a revelation today as he scored 10 points, collared 8 boards and swatted 6 shots. Birthday boy Simon and the rest of the backcourt did well in hounding their counterparts on the defensive end, leading to so many open opportunities to attack the basket.
Just like in their first game, La Salle scored at the 80s while limiting their opponent to roughly 60 points. As the defense goes, the offense will follow.
This may perhaps be La Salle’s best all-around performance for a long time. If only they can play like this consistently.

Simon Atkins – Out of the Shadows
Posted by Lesmes Solanoy
In my three years of covering the UAAP, this is the first time that I saw Simon Atkins being interviewed by the press inside the press room after a La Salle win. It has always been JV Casio or Rico Maierhoffer. Occasionally, there is James Mangahas, PJ Barua and even Maui Villanueva and Kish Co. But not Simon Atkins. It is not that Simon did not have brilliant performances in the past but it is just that he has always been overshadowed by his more stellar teammates.
But this time, it is different. The four-year veteran Green Archer certainly made his mark in the opening game. He impressed upon the people what he can bring to the team. And boy, did he bring it! In the UP-DLSU game--- 20 points, 4 of 9 from the three point line, 2 assists and 3 steals. It is definitely Simon’s time to shine.
Under the system of then coach Franz Pumaren, Simon had to play a pivotal supporting role as the backup and later on starting point guard. In so doing, he operated under the radar. Nobody paid much attention to this former La Salle Zobel Junior Archer. The more critical ones would dismiss him simply as another bratty La Sallian thinking he could play basketball.
Simon was aware of this. But far from being disheartened, Simon responded to the challenge. He made use of what people thought of him and worked on it.
“Over the past year, I noticed that the defense on me was sagging. They were letting me shoot. It looks like they don’t respect my shooting,” remarked the 21 year old Psychology major. “Before, I was always hesitating to shoot. But during the offseason I worked on my shooting. I hope they respect me now,” Atkins added after that spectacular UP-La Salle game.

Pregame: Green Archers vs Red Warriors
Posted by GREENARCHERS.PH
La Salle is looking to bounce back after a horrendous showing last Thursday as they go up against the UE Red Warriors. The Green Archers were unable to score a win against them is Season 72. The Warriors just had too much size, firepower and experience for our team to handle last year. Despite the loss of almost all of last year’s starters, UE remains to be a tall and formidable team.
It will be interesting to see coach Dindo go up against the school he guided for 5 seasons. With him at the coaching helm, UE was always a perennial contender. Though the Red Warriors’ composition has significantly changed since he left, Dindo is still very much familiar with their mainstays whom he recruited and developed.
UE is coming off an 80-67 opening day loss to UST. Paul Lee had a lackluster performance with only 7 points though it was reported that he played hurt. The comebacking James Martinez was also shut down by the tough perimeter defense of the Growling Tigers. Sophomore Ken Acibar, who once suited up for La Salle as an aspirant during the summer leagues a couple of years back, led the Warriors with 17 points.
Match-ups
When he is healthy, no one in the Archers’ backcourt can individually stop Lee. He can just hurt you in so many ways offensively. Simon may perhaps be the only one among our guards capable to hang tough with him throughout the match. It may be better to assign Joshua on Lee. James Martinez and Paul Zamar are basically spot-up shooters while Raffy Reyes is more of a slasher type. Though all of them played poorly against UST, expect them to play inspired ball on Sunday as they go up against their former mentor.

The View from the Armchair – Game 2 vs NU
Posted by Nel
The Green Archers hit a big speed bump in their second game, falling to a bigger and more physical NU team today, 55-59 to even their win-loss record at 1-1. After coming off an impressive win in the opening game against UP, our team showed its relative youth and inexperience against the taller and heftier Bulldogs, showing little of the composure and confidence they exhibited . NU, which led most of the way, except for the closing seconds of the first half, survived the strong finishing kick of the Archers to pull of the win.
Another slow start
In contrast to their first game where they led from the get-go, the Archers started off flat and trailed for almost the entire first half. Although they pressured NU into 7 turnovers in the first quarter, they shot poorly from the field, hitting only 4 field goals out of 17 tries. NU’s resident import Mbe asserted his height right from the start, pouring in 10 points while pulling down 6 rebounds as NU dominated the boards, 17-8 in the first quarter to lead 10-17. The second quarter saw NU score first to threaten to pull away at 10-19, but aggressive defending limited NU to only 3 field goals in the quarter, and accurate shooting (7/13) led by the 10 points of Jovet Mendoza allowed the Archers to take the lead in the final seconds of the first half.
The 3rd quarter saw the La Salle game unravel as the Archers misfired the field, duplicating NU’s 3 field goals for 6 points in the quarter while NU scored 18 on another dominant stretch by Mbe who singlehandedly outscored (8 points to 6) and outrebounded (6 rebounds to 5) the entire La Salle team in the 3rd quarter. Another poor shooting quarter saw the Archers miss 14 out of their 17 fg attempts for a low 18% while committing more turnovers, 5 to NU’s 4 as they trailed NU after 3 quarters, 30-41. NU maintained its largest lead at 32-43 at the start of the 4th before 2 unsportsmanlike fouls on NU gave La Salle some momentum to cut the lead to 38-43. Botched defensive assignments allowed NU to penetrate the defenses and build up the lead to 43-52. Desperate attempts from long range netted the Archers 3 triples, but it was a case of too little, too late as they yielded to NU, 55-59.

La Salle gets chewed upon by the Bulldogs
Posted by GREENARCHERS.PH
The Green Archers failed to follow-up on their impressive season debut as they got bitten hard by the NU Bulldogs today 55-59. The final score though does not reflect the sub-par performance of the team all throughout the match. The energy we expected from the team wasn’t there as they allowed NU to exert their muscle in the paint.
La Salle started the game off bad as they were unable to hit their shots. They ended the first half strong as they led by 1. It was all downhill from thereon as they committed so many lapses on defense aside from their shooting woes. The Archers only scored 6 points in the third period. When the team finally caught fire offensively, there was only a minute left in the match. Too late the hero as they say.
NU’s foreign rookie Emmanuel Mbe was a monster, figuratively speaking as he led all scorers with 21 and collared 19 rebounds. La Salle simply had no answer for Mbe’s strength down low. Cocoy Hermosisma had an offnight but his teammates stepped up and made the shots.
The Green Archers were not their usual selves on both ends. They failed to capitalize on their quickness and allowed NU to dictate the tempo of the game. Anchored on Mbe, the Bulldogs executed a more deliberate style of play thus enabling them to impose their will inside the shaded lane. Yutien was the lone bright spot among our big men. Ferdinand and Maui were completely lost while Jovet was a no-show after a good second quarter.

Pregame: Green Archers vs Bulldogs
Posted by GREENARCHERS.PH
The Green Archers aim for their second win in as many games as they face the NU Bulldogs. Last year, La Salle won its first round encounter with NU but come the second, it was the latter that administered the fatal blow to the Archers' final four hopes. Well that’s history now and this season promises a more intense match-up between these two squads.
The Bulldogs are coming off a 54-60 loss to Adamson in their initial outing. Despite the defeat, NU showed that they can compete with a team that is billed to be among the favorites this season.
Match-ups
The Green Archers will not only have to contend with NU’s size but also their pesky backcourt. Emmanuel Mbe, their 6’7 Cameroonian rookie solidifies the Bulldogs’ strength in the paint along with sturdy veterans Mervin Baloran and Jewel Ponferrada. Ferdinand, Jovet, Maui and Yutien need to capitalize on their ability to run the floor if they want to gain the upper hand in this match-up. Simon, Joshua, Joseph and the rest of our backcourt will have their hands full against the scrappy NU guards like Joseph Terso, Jerome Tungcul, Ajeet Singh and Cocoy Hermosisima.

Upcoming games for St. Benilde

2 p.m. San Sebastian vs St Benilde (Srs)
Can College of Saint Benilde end continue its "unbeaten record"?
It's doable. But then it can be done if the Blazers can hurdle defending champion San Sebastian as they continue their campaign in the 86th NCAA basketball tournament Wednesday at The Arena in San Juan.
Coming off a nine-day respite, St Benilde gets its first acid test of the season against the Stags, who are tied with San Beda for the lead with identical 3-0 slates.
The Blazers opened the season on a bright note when they beat Arellano, 70-64, last July 5.
In that contest, the backcourt duo of Mark de Guzman and Carlo Lastimosa and center Jan Tan provided the spark in beating the Chiefs.
That win enabled CSB to keep its unbeaten record, as jokingly said by coach Richard del Rosario.
