The View From the Armchair – Game 4 vs Ateneo
Posted by NelIn what probably counts as one of the biggest shockers so far in S73, our Green Archers upended the fancied Ateneo Blue Eagles, 66-63 yesterday at the Araneta Coliseum. After trailing by 9 with slightly less than 4 minutes left in the game, many of our supporters had given them up for lost. But in a characteristic (at least for this Archers team) show of their never-day-die attitude, the team smothered the blue-and-white offensive, holding them to a single point while pouring in 13 in an explosive burst that “shocked and awed” the Eagles into submission. At the end, Ateneo still had a faint chance to send the game into overtime, but still reeling from that 3minute burst of intense pressure, they could not execute the play drawn up by Coach Black and had to pin their hopes on their center Chua for tying 3pointers which he missed badly.
Joshua Webb finally broke out of his slump, tallying 12 points despite being tightly marked all game long, and he led a balanced scoring parade with 11 out of the 12 Archers breaking into the scoring column. Last game’s best player Maui Villanueva played a very quiet game, concentrated on the defensive end, and teamed with Andrada to tend the boards where he pulled down 5 rebounds and made the painted area an unfriendly zone for any Blue Eagle who dared venture near the ring.
Can we mention streak in the same breath as Green Archers? With the win, we broke a 2-year, 6-game losing streak, and improbably started a very modest 2-game winning skein.
What went wrong?
Not much, since we won. However, there were obvious lapses in concentration, and still some miscommunication resulting in turnovers, showing that this team still has some work to do to refine its teamwork. There were also miscues on defense, allowing Chua to get free to score on a couple of baseline plays.
What went right
The players never lost their focus or concentration. That’s impressive. There was a game plan drawn up by the coaches, as well as options (plan b, c, d, etc). The players stuck to it, never played out of control, always looked for each other, and except for a couple of botched defensive assignments, were almost always in position where they were supposed to be.

Junior Archers were bitten by the dogs as well
Posted by GREENARCHERS.PHJust like their Senior counterparts, the Junior Archers were also chewed upon, this time by the NU Bullpups 62-74 yesterday. Axel Torres bounced back from a lackluster performance last game with 28 points but was unable to get much support from his teammates. DLSZ falls to 1-3 and will face UPIS on Tuesday.
DLSZ 62 - A. Torres 28, Tempongko 10, J. Torres 8, Capacio 6, Subido 5, Reyes 3, Monteiro 2, Salvador 0, Roxas 0, Calugcug 0
NU 74 - Estoce 23, Parungao 18, Lara 11, Atangan 9, Meneses 6, Tansingco 5, Carta 2, Rivero 0, Caparas 0, Banquiao 0

Sudden Sam: La Salle finally beats Ateneo after 2 years
Posted by GREENARCHERS.PH
Just when we all thought that the Green Archers would haplessly lose to Ateneo again, an unlikely hero stepped up to the challenge. Sam Marata’ two clutch 3-pointers down the stretch helped La Salle overcome a 9-point deficit in the last 3 minutes to escape with a 66-63 win. The Archers have finally broken its 6-game, 2-year UAAP losing streak against their rivals.
We have been longing to see this kind of a game from Sam who has been struggling for consistency with his outside shot since he started playing for La Salle. The sophomore was perfect from the rainbow territory at 4/4 shooting. He and Joshua led Archers with 12 apiece while Simon followed with 9.
The Blue Eagles sure looked like lame ducks during the final minutes. For a team with so much experience in closing out games, this has got to hurt.
It was basically a low-scoring game where neither team was able to pull away or gain any sort of momentum. La Salle struggled with their field goals but kept the game close with their pressure defense on the Blue Eagles. The team did a phenomenal job on Salva, forcing him out of his comfort zone and making him insignificant in this game. They were also able to limit Salamat’s production by making him shoot more from the outside rather than allowing him to penetrate the basket.

Pregame: Green Archers vs Blue Eagles
Posted by GREENARCHERS.PH
The picture says it all. Yes it’s been that long. The last time La Salle won over Ateneo in an elimination match, it was on Sept 15, 2005 when the Green Archers manhandled the Blue Eagles to the tune of 72-55 en route to a 4-0 season sweep against their rivals that season. Since then, the Archers have only managed to defeat them in 3 playoff matches with the last one being on Sept 30, 2007 when we won our "redemption" championship.Since then, Ateneo has dominated us in the last couple of years. With size, talent and experience still favoring the Eagles this season, the odds are still stacked against the Archers' finally ending this long head-to-head losing streak.
The Blue Eagles are coming off two successive wins after dropping their initial outing against FEU while we racked up a win-loss-win in that same stretch of games. Despite the loss of Al-Husseini, Reyes and Baclao, Ateneo still has enough talent to make a serious run for a rare three-peat crown. In their last two games, we witnessed how some of their players unexpectedly rose to the occasion especially when the game was on the line. In contrast, the Archers' performance against NU has raised some concerns about the team's consistency and ability to play well against the stronger teams.
Match-ups
Ateneo has the edge in the frontline and in the wings. For the past two seasons, the Archers simply had no answer to Al-Husseini who simply torched us from underneath and even the perimeter. He was a double-barreled threat who could score or dish off to an open teammate if double-teamed. Baclao was a steady force in the paint and on defense. Even with both gone, the Eagles still have Salva, Buenafe, Chua and rookies Escueta, Erram and Dela Cruz to man the front court, with Salva posing the biggest threat because of his versatility and size.
Our undersized big men must continue to be aggressive on both ends as well get out and run. If Papot can repeat his stellar performance last Sunday, especially on defense, this will give La Salle's game the much needed boost in the low post. Still, Ateneo’s bulk and experience makes them an edge.

Coach Dindo – “Aggressiveness made the difference”
Posted by Lesmes Solanoy
“Now, where was this team last Thursday?”
This was what I was thinking as I witness how the Green Archers displayed its mastery over last season’s runner up, the UE Red Warriors, in their game last Sunday at the Philsports Arena, just three days after being upset big time by the NU Bulldogs.
So, when Coach Dindo Pumaren took the centerstage in the post-game interviews, all the reporters had one question to ask--
“What was the difference of this UE game with the NU game?”
Coach Dindo answered simply “Aggressiveness.”
This was echoed by DLSU’s highest scorer that game, Maui Villanueva.
“Kulang talaga kami sa aggressiveness kaya kami natalo sa NU,” said the three-year veteran. “Maganda defense namin and naging aggressive kami ngayon. Sinunod lang namin yung Lasalle system, nag-execute kami ngayon. Yun ang big difference ng game na ito,” Villanueva added.
What is “aggressiveness” ? It is outrebounding the opponent (50-33), out-assisting (18-7), out-blocking (6-1) (Well, this one is through the lone effort of rookie Papot Paredes), outrunning (18-6 fastbreak points), and out-hustling (23-13 turnover points and 18-2 2nd chance points) the opponent.

Junior Archers lose second straight
Posted by GREENARCHERS.PHThe Junior Archers dropped their second straight game as they fall prey to the UST Tiger Cub 59-47. It was a game we'd rather forget as the team shot only 31% from the field and scored only 3 points in the third period. Mikee Capacio led DLSZ with 18 points. Mainstays like Axel Torres, Gerone Monteiro and Renzo Subido were just not themselves today. It seems like they are still reeling from that heartbreaking overtime defeat against Adamson last Saturday. The Junior Archers drop to 1-2 and will face the NU Bullpups this weekend.
Box Scores
DLSZ 47 - Capacio 18, Reyes 11, N Torres 5, Subido 4, Tempongko 3, Roxas 3, Calugcug 2, A Torres 1, Salvador 0, Monteiro 0

The View From the Armchair – Game 3 vs UE
Posted by Nel
The Green Archers ran roughshod over last year’s runner-up UE Warriors, 82-63 to get back into the winning column. The game felt like a replay of their performance against UP, with La Salle scoring first to grab the lead they never relinquished, and pulling away in the second half to rout their stunned opponents. Like UP, UE was unofficially ranked above DLSU despite losing 3 of their top players of last year. Maui Villanueva returned from a sub-par game against NU with a superb game: 16 points (6/9 fgs, 4/5 fts!, 7 rebounds, 3 assists and 1 steal).
Another fast start was the key
One of the concerns about this “green” Archer team is their consistency. But this time, no one’s complaining, because they started off strong unlike their game against NU. Team Captain Atkins again figured prominently in the strong start, sinking a corner triple to kick off scoring. Again, in another parallel to their first game, Sam Marata also hit 3point shot in the first quarter, forcing UE to respect the outside shooting and opening up the paint for what was to follow later in the game.
One difference between this game and the previous ones – Ferdinand asserted himself in the first quarter, scoring 6 points and pulling down 3 boards to serve notice that the La Salle interior game would be a force to reckon with, at least for this game. The Archer press, which was considered as already thoroughly scouted, still pulled off some surprises, accounting for 5 turnovers in the opening 10 minutes.
