Archers tame Tigers to grab solo second
Posted by GREENARCHERS.PH
Despite losing a huge margin, the Green Archers showed enough endgame poise down the stretch to defeat the UST Tigers 61-53 today. La Salle displayed cool resolve in the face of a fiery comeback by UST led by Clark Bautista. The third-year guard erupted with a barrage of three-pointers as UST trimmed La Salle’s once 20-plus lead to as low as 4 points approaching the late stages of the match. But thanks to the steady playmaking of Simon, Almond, Joel and the timely baskets of Jovet and Maui from underneath, the Archers thwarted any last attempts by the Tigers to seize control of the game to finally seal the win.
Going into the final period, La Salle appeared to have the game in hand especially the way they hounded UST’s offense and inflicted so many turnovers. They got a bit relaxed on defense as they left Bautista with several open looks and allowed Camus room for him to take it strong to the ring. The FEU game last Thursday should serve as a lesson to the team never to lose focus and play heads-up basketball for 40 minutes.
Overall, it was good win for the Archers. They pounded it inside and used their size advantage against the thin UST frontline. Fortuna and Teng’s production were limited thanks to the superb defense by our backcourt. If it were not for Bautista’s three spree, it would have been a complete offensive shutdown for the Tigers.
Good solid game from Maui, Jovet, Yutien and Papot. They have been the silent workhorses for La Salle and they will be counted upon to provide stability to the team’s frontline in the succeeding games this season.
The Green Archers will close out their first round campaign next Sunday as they go up against the Adamson Falcons. A win will solidify their hold on second place heading to the next phase of the tournament.

Pregame: Green Archers vs Growling Tigers
Posted by GREENARCHERS.PHStill reeling from last Thursday’s double overtime loss to FEU, the Green Archers will next face the streaky Growling Tigers this Sunday. UST is the only team La Salle was able to defeat twice last season. This is the team they have consistently beaten for the past 9 seasons. The Archers’ only loss to the Tigers in the 2000s was in Season 70 when UST wiped-out a double digit deficit with only a minute remaining to escape with an overtime win.
The Growling Tigers are coming off a win over NU last Thursday. They love to shoot the three-ball so much that they have basically made it their primary offensive option. So far they have been doing well as they lead the league in conversions beyond the arc. Even their big guys have the ability to shoot from the perimeter. They are starting to mirror the image of their coach who was known for his accuracy from downtown during his playing days.
Match-ups
UST’s frontline is as thin as ever. Camus and Afuang are the only experienced bigs in the team and they don’t even play low-post. Finally, we could very well say that La Salle has the advantage here and I don’t see any reason why our guys can’t control the boards and score heavily in the paint. The Archers should make the most of their size advantage and pound it inside.
The Tigers are solid in the backcourt with gunners Fortuna, Teng and Bautista. These three have been scoring in droves as of late and have been consistent with their shots from the outside. Wingmen Mariano and rookie Daquioang have also the ability to hit those jumpers. Though they can match up quite well in quickness and perimeter scoring, the Archers’ advantage is that our guards can also take it strong to the hoop.
Expect UST to do the same run-and-gun offense so the challenge is to effectively defend them from the outside and not giving their shooters clear looks. Without any inside presence, the Tigers need to wax hot from the perimeter in order to win. They Archers should be wary of their bigmen who can also run the floor and score from medium range. Take note that UST's losses so far came from teams with good inside scoring. If La Salle maximizes their interior presence and keeps their defense going, they will be in good shape to win here.

The View from the Armchair – Game 5 vs FEU
Posted by Nel
How do you describe that game against FEU?
Almost, but not quite.
A feel good loss. Oops, I said that last year.
Snatching defeat from the jaws of victory
A morale boosting loss
Wait, I have it.
Aw shucks!
Nuts!
Kids, cover your ears - @##%^^%$$&*&***!!!!!
There, I feel better already.
The team showed that they have the tools to compete head-to-head with the “better” teams. It’s just that they haven’t figured out how to use them effectively yet. Or to be more precise, over a full 40-minute game. But for almost 3 full quarters, they led and improbably dominated the taller, bigger, and much more experienced Tams, forced FEU to desperately play catch-up just to get to overtime, dragged them into a second overtime before succumbing to the pressure and fatigue to fall, 80-84.
At the end of the game, the relieved grins on the faces of the FEU team management said it all. What a wringer, what a great escape for the mighty Tams. From the “greenest” team in the UAAP. Literally.

Archers yield in double OT to the Tams
Posted by GREENARCHERS.PHThe Green Archers battled the heavily favored FEU Tamaraws in a tight, heart-stopping battle before falling in double overtime, 80-84 at the Araneta Coliseum today.
Like in the loss to NU, the Archers struggled early in the game, allowing the opponents to take an early lead. With their early plays, the Tamaraws served notice that they planned to take advantage of their significant size and height advantage in the frontline, scoring on a couple of 3point plays in the paint by the FEU big men Noundou and Ramos. With the La Salle offense sputtering on miscues and misses, FEU took an early 3-10 lead, widened it to 9-17 before it was cut down to 14-17 at the end of the first quarter through a pair of tryes by by Marata, as well as fgs by dela Paz and Villanueva.
In the second quarter, the Archers went to their main weapon this year – defense, holding FEU scoreless for 4 minutes while speeding up the game tempo to grab the lead, 23-17 led by baskets by Villanueva, Atkins, and Andrada. Webb also scored on a couple of his patented drives to tow the Archers to a 30-21 lead. FEU scored 8 straight points to close in, 30-29 before Atkins teamed up with Andrada on a couple of beautiful pick-and-roll plays to retake the momentum and the lead at halftime, 38-30. In a complete reversal of roles, the Archers dominated the rebounding battle, 23-16, shot better from the field at 41% against FEU’s 37%, and outscored them from the perimeter, 13-3. Villanueva led our scorers in the first half with 9 points, followed by Marata and Andrada with 7 each. Despite the fine showing, a troubling trend emerged in the first half that would take its toll later in the game – the foul shooting. In the first half, the Archers missed 7 foul shots out of the 15 awarded to them.
Coming out of the half, FEU made a determined run to catch up, 35-40 before consecutive baskets by Marata, Andrada, and Webb gave La Salle their biggest lead at 47-37. Then FEU made a charge to cut the lead to 1, 48-49, and finally tie the game at 51-all as the Archers lapsed into a few uncharacteristic errors. The Archers managed to retake the lead at 53-51 at the end of the quarter behind a pair of Webb fts.

Pregame: Green Archers vs Tamaraws
Posted by GREENARCHERS.PH
After a morale-boosting win over Ateneo last Saturday, the Green Archers will try to grab a share of the top spot in the standings as they take on another formidable foe in the FEU Tamaraws. La Salle lost both elimination round matches to FEU last year. In tomorrow's match, we hope our team can retain their confidence and high level of play to give the Tamaraws its first loss of the season.
FEU is coming in undefeated with a 4-0 slate and are probably playing their best basketball since they last won the title in 2005. They are just like the Archers a couple of years ago; a young group that has now gained enough maturity and experience to dominate this league. Now in their 4th year of playing together, the core of Cawaling, Ramos, Knuttel, Sanga and Cervantes, plus sophomore sensation Garcia and rookie Romeo, are now the most veteran squad and clearly the favorites to win it all in UAAP Season 73.
Match-ups
FEU clearly has the upper-hand in all positions. The trio of Ramos, Cervantes and Noundou are a force down low and will exert their dominance over our thin frontline. Sanga, for his size, has the ability to light it up from downtown while Cawaling, though he hasn’t shown much yet this season remains to be dangerous scorer from the wing. On a half-court set we might have difficulty matching up against the solid FEU frontline but if the Archers can dictate a fast-paced game, this would give Joshua, Maui, Yutien Papot, Ferdi and Jovet more opportunities to do their thing.
Garcia has been instrumental in all of the Tamaraws’ wins so far. Despite this just being his 2nd UAAP season (though he is already a college senior), he has already shown the maturity and on-court mindset to make him already the heart-and-soul of this FEU team. Romeo on the other hand played well in their last game against UP. He was a scoring machine back in high school so we all know that he is capable of torching the net on a good day.

Sam Marata – All Fired Up
Posted by Lesmes Solanoy
It couldn’t have come at a more opportune time.
La Salle was down by 4 points going into the final two minutes of the ballgame. Ateneo was poised to extend their winning streak against the Green Archers to 7 games. On a fastbreak, Samuel Joseph Marata received a long pass and in the blink of an eye, released the ball from beyond the rainbow country. All the green and white gallery could do is watch… with a mixed feeling of fear and hope, as the ball drills into the basket! Suddenly, the Lasalle gallery breaks into a wild roar.
But it did not stop there, as 30 seconds after the first one, Marata, again converts a triple that change the course of the game forever.
“I don’t know. Tinira ko na lang. I felt good about it. Siguro parang na-feel ko lang talaga na I can make this shot.” Judging from the play, it did seem the former UPIS standout's confidence was zooming high at that instant. That spectacular shot was made with three blue shirts already down the DLSU court, including Eric Salamat who was all over him. More importantly, there was no green shirt to take the rebound in case he missed. Mindful of this, Marata still took his chance, and boy, aren’t we glad he took it.
Where does this guy get the confidence? Prior to that back to back triple, he was 2 of 2 from the area in that game. He is no stranger to the three-point area. For a time last season, during his rookie year, most of his points come from that region. No doubt, he can shoot the three’s.
The ability to shoot from long distance could have been genetic. The Psychology Major is a nephew of the recently departed Ric Ric Marata, a noted three-point specialists during his heydays in the PBA, particularly with the RFM franchise. The elder Marata died last April due to internal organ failure.
