Erik Spoelstra, the Filipino-American head coach of the Miami Heat, visited the DLSU campus today to conduct a basketball clinic through the NBA Fit Program.

Students, teachers, players and coaches were all thrilled to see the closest thing they’ll probably get to these guys.

Lady Blazers bow out of V-League

It seems that College of Saint Benilde is even having a hard time finding some good luck in the Shakey's V-League.

The Lady Blazers ended their dismal campaign in the seventh season of the league's Second Conference after losing to fellow NCAA member Perpetual Help, 23-25, 25-21, 25-17, 25-22, on August 8 at The Arena in San Juan.

Despite solid efforts from key players Giza Yumang, Cindy Optana and Rossan Fajardo, CSB couldn't stop the determined Lady Altas by dropping the last three sets after grabbing the opening frame of this one-hour and 40-minute encounter.

With that, the ladies in green-and-black ended with a disappointing 0-7 slate, the school's worst performance since joining the league two years ago.

Archers got clawed by the Falcons at end-game

The Green Archers failed to secure second place at the end of the first round as they lost to the Adamson Falcons 68-70. In a battle of two defense-minded squads, it was the more experienced Falcons that showed more grit and desire to win despite trailing by 7 at the start of the final period.

La Salle hung tough with Adamson throughout the match. It was just unfortunate that the team committed several lapses on both ends during the last few minutes of the game that enabled the Falcons to comeback. Unlike the UST game last week, the Archers showed signs of agitation when the opposition inched their way back into the game. Of course, the missed free throws did us in as well.

The Falcons played the Archers well defensively especially in the fourth quarter. They completely took the rhythm out of our team’s offense with their 2-3 zone. They also handled the ball well which prevented La Salle from effectively executing their usual fastbreak attack and converting on turnovers.

Despite the loss, La Salle has proven that they have what it takes to compete with the heavy favorites. Except for the NU game, they could have won the other two matches had they gotten the right breaks down the stretch. The Green Archers were never "blown out" in any of their losses and this shows what kind of character this young team has now.

The season is far from over. Currently at 4th place, the Archers are still in a good position to improve their performance and vie for a final four slot.

Pregame: Green Archers vs Falcons

The Green Archers will end their first round campaign against the Adamson Falcons this Sunday. Both teams are currently tied for 2nd place (4-2) along with Ateneo. A victory here by La Salle will not only match their win total from last season but also be within striking distance of league-leading FEU (6-0) going in to the next round of the tournament. Last year, the Archers had a difficult time matching up with the Falcons’ attacking backcourt and their slew of tall and agile wingmen that can both shoot and take it strong into the paint. This year will be the same or harder since Adamson is intact and all primed to make a serious title run.

The Falcons are coming off a blowout win over UE last Thursday. This team has shown a lot of maturity and mental toughness this season. They are no longer the Falcons of old who can’t seem to close out games.

Match-ups

Unlike their last game, the Green Archers will face a backcourt that is a threat both from the inside and in the perimeter. Nuyles and Alvarez are Adamson’s top leading scorers so far. Cat-quick Canada is also capable of producing big numbers despite his small stature. Simon, Sam, Joel, Luigi, and Almond need to play straight-up defense and stop them from driving through the lane. Though they can shoot the jump shot, the Adamson guards do more damage inside. Our players should also be careful on offense as the Falcons lead the league in steals with their backcourt contributing almost half of their total output.

Next Game on August 11
(The Arena, San Juan)
10 a.m. San Beda vs CSB-LSGH (Jrs)
2 p.m. San Beda vs St Benilde (Srs)

Not a way to end a rough week for the College of Saint Benilde Blazers.

The Blazers continued their struggles after a suffering a heartbreaking 65-63 overtime loss to Mapua in the 86th NCAA basketball tournament at The Arena in San Juan on August 6.

In a see-saw battle, the green-and-black cagers appeared to be on the verge of pulling off an upset victory but Allan Mangahas hit a booming triple that eventually propelled the Cardinals to win their third consecutive game.

St Benilde suffered its fifth consecutive defeat and fell to eighth place with a 1-5 slate. The squad of coach Richard del Rosario hasn't won a game since a 70-64 win over Arellano on July 5.

It was a disappointing end to a hectic week for the Blazers as they lost all three scheduled games. Aside from a 75-74 defeat to defending champion San Sebastian on Monday, they were handed a 70-54 beating by shorthanded Letran two days later.

Carlo Lastimosa led the team with 21 points, four rebounds and four assists while lanky center Jan Tan came off the bench to produce 14 points and 10 rebounds. Guard Mark de Guzman added nine points, seven rebounds and six assists.

Blue Eaglets just too much for the Junior Archers

The Junior Archers could not sustain a good first half effort as they lost to the Ateneo Blue Eaglets this morning 57-71 in a rematch of last year’s finals at the Araneta Coliseum.

DLSZ was in control for almost the entire first half but a late charge by the defending champs trimmed the margin to two by halftime. It was all Ateneo in the second half as they erected a 15-point lead midway in the third period and held DLSZ scoreless for a long stretch. The Blue Eaglets were just too good on both ends of the floor as they thwarted any attempt by the Junior Archers to comeback.

The team fell to a 3-4 record to close out the first round. Ateneo remains undefeated at 7-0.

The View from the Armchair – Game 6 vs UST

    Posted by Nel

No siree. Not this time. No way we're losing another one after leading for most of the game.

Showing that they did pick up something from that loss to FEU, the Archers avoided another end-game collapse in upending a fighting UST squad, 61-53. Like they did against FEU, the Archers let the opponents take an early lead, then rallied to wrest the initiative in the 2nd quarter and carry it all the way into the 4th quarter, at which time the opponents then threatened with a rally of their own. But this wasn't a case of deja vu. When UST snarled and clawed their way to within 4 points at 53-49, our boys weren't fazed – the Archers regained their composure, their defenses stiffened, they caged the tiger and held on to take the victory.

A better start

The Archers allowed UST to take the lead 7-12 upto the closing minutes of the first quarter, when Almond strung together 6 points to almost singlehandedly power the Archers into the lead at the end of the first quarter, 15-12. The Archer defense then proceeded to bamboozle the Tigers into 8 errors in the second quarter while holding them to 10 points on 4 field goals at an 28% shooting clip to take a 37-22 halftime lead.

The guards carried the scoring load in the first half, with Almond, Simon, Luigi, and Joel accounting for 27 out of the team’s 37 points. Frontliners Jovet, Maui, and Yutien completed the scoring.

The Archers threatened to blow the game wide open when they upped the lead to 19 at 43-24, but Camus scored twice towards the end of the quarter to narrow the gap, 47-33. The 3rd quarter was a low scoring affair, UST outscoring us by a single point, 10-11.

Blazers almost upset Stags; Greenies finally nailed one over Staglets

College of Saint Benilde failed on its bid to upset defending champion San Sebastian after bowing 75-74 in the 86th NCAA basketball tournament at The Arena in San Juan on August 2.

After a solid start, the Blazers found themselves trailing by 17 points in the second half and failed to capitalize on a sluggish performance by the Stags down the stretch to suffer their third consecutive setback.

The Taft-based cagers are now holding a record of 1-3 for sixth spot in the standings.

Carlo Lastimosa topscored for CSB with 20 points but only had nine points in the first three quarters after committing four fouls early in the third period.

Former RP U-18 team standout Mark de Guzman tried to put the Blazers back from a 68-51 deficit with 5:42 remaining by uncorking two triples late. Unfortunately, it wasn't enough to propel the Blazers to the win.

His first three trimmed the lead to three (74-71), 13 seconds to go, after draining one from the left corner after his initial attempt hit the back side of the board.

The Stags' Anthony del Rio was fouled with 12 seconds left and muffed both foul shots giving St Benilde a chance to tie the game. But during the battle for the rebound, del Rio was able to grab the ball and was fouled anew, splitting his charities with 9.9 seconds for a 75-71 advantage.
