Pregame: Green Archers vs Fighting Maroons Round 2
Posted by GREENARCHERS.PH
The Green Archers will look to solidify their hold on fourth spot in the standings when they face the luckless UP Maroons on Thursday, August 19. Instead of our usual pregame routine of dissecting the match-ups and discussing what the Green Archers should do in order to win, we’ll just cut to the chase here and tell you what they should not do, and that is to Relax!!
The Maroons are in dire straits with a zero in the win column so far in the tournament. For a team that was widely regarded one of those with a legitimate chance at making the final four before the season started, they have been a disappointment. Even the early coaching change after 3 games of the first round did not help reverse their string of bad games.
The Archers have every reason to be upbeat about this match-up. Alvin Padilla is suspended and the entire UP team is injured (emotionally). Ah yes, the perfect recipe for complacency. If you think about it, it’s kind of scary to go up against a team with zero pressure because of the tendency to take them lightly.
Despite all the things that have gone wrong for them this year, expect the Maroons to still fight it out in their remaining games and play the spoilers role. That is why we can’t stress enough how important it is for the Green Archers to play with the same energy as if they are going up against a contender.
This game may even be more important than their upcoming games against Ateneo and FEU. Why? Because this is winnable for the Archers if they just play their usual “A” game. La Salle is still not yet assured of a final four spot so it is critical to get the necessary wins especially against teams at the lower half of the standings. We wouldn’t want to see the team repeat last season’s painful episode of playing catch-up in the race for a semi-final berth. At 5-3, the Archers need to win at least 3 more games to ensure at least a tie for the final 4 slot. There are no more "can afford to lose" games. Each game will count.
So to the Archers, please don’t treat UP as patsies and play hard-nosed La Salle basketball for 40 minutes. Blow them out early and never give them even the slightest opening to creep back in. The Maroons will be playing purely for pride, and will be looking for any scalps to take back to Diliman as a consolation prize. As far as they're concerned, the Green Archer scalp will do very nicely as their first victim, so please make sure that last year's second round result doesn't happen again. Our comfortable 18-point win against them in the first round is ancient history. When the game begins, the score will be 0-0. When the game ends, please make sure that the score is heavily in our favor. Forget about that much-awaited match against the Blue Eagles on Sunday. There is still a game to be won before that. One game at a time.

Blazers end losing skid; Greenies’ woes continue
Posted by GREENARCHERS.PH
College of Saint Benilde snapped a six-game losing streak as it overcame a second quarter meltdown to edge past Perpetual Help, 79-70, in the 86th NCAA basketball tournament at The Arena in San Juan on August 16.
The Blazers leaned on big man Tim McCoy in the fourth quarter to end the first round with two wins and six defeats tying Emilio Aguinaldo College for sixth spot in the nine-team league.
McCoy had eight points in the fourth quarter including a three-point play that pushed CSB up 66-58 with 7:53 left and never looked back.
The former Philippine Christian University Dolphin finished with 12 points and 10 rebounds in just 26 minutes off the bench that impressed coach Richard del Rosario.
“He’s been a good contributor but sometimes he’s too eager, maybe because he spent a year of residency,” said del Rosario of McCoy.

The View from the Armchair – Game 8 vs NU
Posted by NelThe Green Archers survived yet another potential 4th quarter meltdown to edge the NU Bulldogs, 59-56 in their first game of the second round. With the win, the Archers fortified their 4th place spot with a 5-3 record while creating some separation from closest pursuers NU and UST, both of which are at 3-5. The win was payback for NU's victory in the second round last year which eliminated us from playoff contention. Interestingly, the final score was a point away from being almost a mirror image of their game in the first round, which NU won 55-59.
The Archers again displayed an inconsistent game, dominating NU in stretches but failing to score and allowing NU to come roaring back at the end. At least, in contrast to previous games against FEU and Adamson, they stood fast to pull off the win after NU came to within 1 point twice in the last quarter at 53-52 on a Terso drive with 2:11 to go, and again at 57-56 on another Terso layup. Surprisingly, it was a couple of rookies who bailed the Archers out: Papot scored inside the lane at 1:49 to stretch the lead to 55-52, and Vosotros nailed a layup on the break, 57-52, and again Vosotros converted 2 free throws, 59-56 with time down to 6 seconds. If this is an indication of the heart of our rookies, then the future indeed looks bright. Vosotros and Paredes combined for 11 out of the 16 Archer points in the final period.

Val Sotto – An “Eagle” who supports La Salle
Posted by Lesmes SolanoyGame in and game out, one particular celebrity spectator is consistently seen in the gallery cheering for the Green and White squad. He can be heard chanting “Go La Salle!” He wears green shirt during games. And like every bona fide Green Archer fan, he jumps and applauds wildly after a magnificent play by the Green Archers.
And that celebrity happens to be an “Eagle”.
No, he is not from the other school. But he is an eagle because he is none other than “Don Gabriel Agila” himself, Val Sotto. The older generation will easily recall Val playing the title role in the hit afternoon program “Agila” and as one of the mainstays of the popular comedy show “T.O.D.A.S.” during the 1980s. But the younger generation may find it hard to see the connection. Nonetheless, his surname should ring a bell for the old and the young ones alike. Val is the brother of Philippines’ top comedian and Eat Bulaga host Vic Sotto and the comebacking Senator Tito Sotto.
Val is aware of people talking about the whole “Eagle supporting La Salle” thing and is amused by it. “Natatawa nga ako, nababasa ko sa internet. Pati color ng shirt ko pinapansin nila. Ok lang, at least I am reliving my younger days (on the reference to Agila),” said Val, who incidentally was wearing a dark blue shirt during that Adamson-La Salle game.

Archers get back at NU; finally win a close game
Posted by Nel
The Green Archers avoided another 4th quarter collapse to get back at first round tormentor NU, 59-56 at the Araneta Coliseum today. Rookie Almond Vosotros coolly sank a pair of free throws with 7.3 seconds to go to ensure the win after NU pg Terso brought NU to within a point when he scored on a drive over our interior defense.
Vosotros poured in 16 points, including 4 clutch points in the last 1:30 of the game, while Team Captain Atkins poured in 13 points on 3 out of 4 shooting from the rainbow territory to help keep the Bulldogs at bay. Papot Paredes shone on defense, blocking or altering at least 4 shots on lane incursions by the NU players, who attacked the interior whenever they could.
With the Archers leading by 1 with 13.3 seconds left and NU with only 2 fouls, the Bulldogs went on a fouling spree to try to force La Salle to the free throw line. Vosotros recovered an loose ball which was tipped away from Andrada, was fouled, and coolly sank the foul shots with 7 seconds left. NU tried to run the ball upcourt, but failed to score and the Archers pulled off the win. Interestingly, 3 of the 5 Archers at the end of the game were rookies: Vosotros, dela Paz, and Paredes, showing Coach Dindo’s faith in these 3 top rookies. Nico Elorde also got some playing time, scored on a nice drive, and played tough defense on the NU guards.
The Archer defense forced NU into more than 23 turnovers to limit NU to under 60 points for the 2nd time this season. The aggressive interior defense of Paredes, Andrada, Villanueva, and Ferdinand succeeded in neutralizing NU center Mbe in the second half after he compiled 9 points and 11 rebounds in the first half.
The game featured an up-and-down Archer game, doing well in the first and third quarters, while misfiring and playing tentatively in the 2nd and 4th quarters. The Archers took the first quarter, 16-12, but could not shoot straight in the second where they tallied only 7 points to maintain the lead at the half, 23-22. In the 3rd, the Archers’ defense limited NU to 12 points while they scored 20 to lead 43-34 after 3 quarters. They stretched the lead to the largest at 46-34 on an Atkins trey, but NU battled back to come closest on that Terso drive before Vosotros ensured the win.
Box Scores
DLSU 59 - Vosotros 16, Atkins 13, Paredes 6, Elorde 4, Villanueva 3, Tolentino 3, Banal 3, Dela Paz 2, Webb 2, Mendoza 2, Marata 2, Andrada 2, Tampus 1, Ferdinand 0
NU 56 - Mbe 15, Terso 15, Baloran 10, Magat 6, Mhobuntin 4, Ponferrada 3, Hermosisima 3, Javillonar 0, Eriobu 0, Tungcul 0 , Singh 0, Malanday 0
Quarter Scores: 16-12; 23-22; 43-34 59-56

Pregame: Green Archers vs Bulldogs – Round 2
Posted by GREENARCHERS.PH
If not for those two games that slipped away in the final moments, the Green Archers could have been at the top of the team standings right now. But as it is, they are currently at fourth spot and are looking to start their second round campaign on a high note as they face the team that dealt them perhaps their only convincing loss of the season. In their first round match-up, La Salle shot poorly from the field and committed a bunch of turnovers on both ends. It was basically a game they could have also won had they just shown some intensity especially on defense right from the very start.
The Bulldogs are coming off an amazing come-from-behind win over UP the other week. Down by 21 points at the start of the second half, NU simply fought their way back and finally seized the lead during the final minute of the game. That win just shows how big of an improvement this team is now not only in talent but also in terms of mental toughness. Past NU teams would have just wilted when faced with a supposedly insurmountable deficit.
The Archers had no answer for Mbe the last time around. Scoring 21 points and collaring 19 rebounds, the NU import totally dominated the paint over our big men. Expect Papot, Yutien and Ferdinand to take turns in limiting his inside production. Joshua, Jovet and Maui are also in for a tough grind against the physical frontline of NU.
Our guards need to get their outside shooting going in order to soften up the Bulldogs’ defense. The team had a hard time against Adamson’s 2-3 zone last week so if NU will apply the same strategy, it’s really important that they need to connect from the perimeter.
Our big men will play a key role in this game. For a young and lean frontline, it is quite surprising to know that the Archers lead the league in rebounding and inside points. They should come out and play with a lot of energy on the defensive end.
Entering the midway point of the season, it is important for La Salle to have some separation against NU and UST in order to solidify their place among the top four.

De La Salle Team “D”
Posted by GREENARCHERS.PH
Arnold Van Opstal, JR Gallarza, Brian Organ (archerpride.com)
From Green Arrows of Archerpride.com:
Most schools have their team A and a Team B. Team Bs susually include players who hope to make their respective Team As as soon as they have finished their residency requirements or are polished enough to make Team A.
For the DLSU Basketball Program, we have a TEAM "D" - D for developmental. These are the players who are being groomed to make the DLSU UAAP team in the next few years. A lot of speculation and rumors have surrounded them so rather than let wild imaginations go even wilder, I have put up this thread to discuss these players who are in our Team D.
Just one caveat. There names and pictures may be in this thread but this DOES NOT GUARANTEE they will eventually suit up for DLSU right away. Some are 2-3 years from making the team mainly due to residency requirements.

The View From the Armchair – Game 7 vs Adamson
Posted by NelAgain the Green Archers dominated the middle quarters and led up to the closing minutes of the game, but lapsed into errors and allowed Adamson to pull off a come-from-behind 68-70 victory.
With the loss, the Archers dropped to solo fourth at 4-3, behind front-runner FEU with a clean 7-0 slate and a game behind Ateneo and Adamson with identical 5-2 records. The race for the final 4 continues to be tight, with 7 teams still in the running for a possible playoff slot. NU and UST are only a game behind us, with both toting 3-4 records. UE can still conceivably make also if it wins at least 6 games. Only UP seems to be out of the running after losing all their games, since it’s improbable that they can sweep the second round.
What went wrong
The defense. While the defense made things difficult for Adamson, the 70 points the Falcons scored is the most by any team against us in regulation. And we weren’t able to seriously bother their scoring, because they still hit at a 44% clip from the field. We did force them into 22 errors which is high considering that Alvarez and Canada are two of the better pgs in the league.
The Archers continued to encounter some difficulty against teams with good penetrating point guards and mobile big men who can attack from the high post. Our guards succeeded in holding Jerick Canada to 3 points, but his running mate Lester Alvarez got away with 12 points, 7 assists, and 4 steals to steer Adamson to victory in the end game.
The Archers lapsed into uncertainty in the last quarter after outplaying the Falcons through the first 3 quarters. A scoreless stretch in the first 3:46 of the 4th quarter allowed Adamson to gain momentum and close in at 59-58, and from there on it was a close game in which the more experienced Falcons succeeded in out-steadying our young team. Six errors in the 4th quarter also contributed to Adamson’s rally, and the final turnover with 5 seconds to go doomed our attempt to send the game into overtime. The Archers only managed to put in 9 points in the final 12 minutes.
