Los Banos, Laguna – Matinee actor Enchong Dee led De La Salle University (DLSU) to end its six-year drought in the men’s division of the 72nd UAAP swimming championships on Sunday at the Trace Aquatics Center.

Dee, who is a mainstay of ABS-CBN teleserye Katorse, claimed his third Most Valuable Player (MVP) award as he won seven golds for DLSU.

Dee ruled the 800-meter freestyle (9:14.84), 200-meter Individual Medley (2:15.42), 100-meter butterfly (57.38), 50-meter butterfly (26.37), 400-meter Individual Medley (5:01.09), 1,500-meter freestyle (17:39.69) and 200-meter butterfly (2:13.74).

Dee’s exploits accounted for 63 of DLSU’s 240 points to top the competition after falling short last season. DLSU, the runner up last season, won its first men’s swimming title since 2002.

Meanwhile, Ateneo de Manila University (ADMU) improved on its fourth place finish last year as it wound up runner up with 196 points. Last year’s champion UST managed only 189 points to end up third.

In the distaff side, University of the Philippines (UP) swam its way to the title after emerging with 257 points.

The gold medal finishes of veterans Marielle Infantado sa 200-meter butterfly …

Red vs Blue in the UAAP Finals

Photos courtesy of inboundpass.com

Fighting out of the red corner, here are the Warriors from Recto. Seeded 3rd in the final 4, they overcame the odds by defeating the FEU Tamaraws twice. They thus eradicated the stigma of countless years of playoff setbacks. They are two wins away from achieving an even greater feat; ending a 24-year title drought.

Fighting out the blue corner, here are the defending champion Eagles from Katipunan. With a 13-1 elimination card, they barely struggled all season and immediately disposed of the Tigers in the final 4. They are two wins away from achieving back-to-back championships, something they last did in the late 1980s.

In terms of talent and experience, it’s pretty obvious that Ateneo has the advantage in this series. Nonetheless, there’s still no such thing as a sure thing especially in the UAAP. Both teams would probably agree with us on this one.

Junior Archers face Blue Eaglets in Finals

The green-and-white basketball season isn’t over yet.

It’s a green vs blue showdown again this coming weekend. This time though, it will be in the High School division as our top-seeded Junior Archers try to reclaim the crown against the defending champion Blue Eaglets.

This will truly be a battle of champion teams. De La Salle Zobel and Ateneo HS have alternated as champs since 2005. The Eaglets have constantly been a powerhouse in the Juniors over the years. The Junior Archers on the other hand have emerged as a serious contender in the past few seasons.

Leading the charges for DLSZ are seniors Gwyne Capacio (son of FEU coach Glenn Capacio), Nico Elorde (Grandson of boxing legend Flash Elorde), Luigi Dela Paz and Arnold Van Opstal. The team only lost twice in the eliminations to finish on top of the heat at 12-2. They crushed the Baby Tams in the F4 playoff to nail the first finals seat, achieving some payback after FEU knocked them out in last year’s F4 playoff.

The Blue Eaglets are anchored by 3rd year guard Kiefer Ravena. Yes, just him but man, this kid is simply phenomenal ever since he …
