University of Santo Tomas stunned No. 1 La Salle in extra time with a 2-0 win Thursday to force a knockout match in the University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) women’s football finals at the Ateneo field.

Mary Cres Ignacio scored the game’s first goal in the 97th minute before Aprilyn Reyes followed with another in the 98th minute for the Tigresses, who stayed alive as the Lady Archers hold a twice-to-beat edge in the finals.

“Medyo naubusan kami ng hangin pero mabuti nalang at nakabawi nung extra time (We kind of lost steam but good thing we were able to bounce back in extra time),” said UST coach Rozano Estrabon.

The Tigresses and Lady Archers return to action on Tuesday at the Ateneo field to determine the women’s football champion.

Ignacio knocked in the goal when La Salle goalkeeper Hanna Ibarra failed to cleanly block the ball.

Reyes tapped in a shot by Marianne Narciso and the Tigresses have a comfortable 2-0 lead with time running out.

The State U six entered the championship round after a 16-25, 25-17, 25-15, 25-23 win Wednesday over the Green Archers at The Arena in San Juan.

Jan Paolo Martinez scored 22 points while Lloyd Belgado added 14 markers including eight blocks for the Fighting Maroons, who faces UST in a best-of-three finals which starts Sunday at The Arena.

Chris Macaset was the Green Archers’ lone double digit scorer with 27 points.

The Green Archers finished the eliminations with a 10-4 mark to obtain the twice-to-beat bonus but they were no match for the streaking Fighting Maroons, who had a 9-5 win-loss card entering the Final Four.

The game was tied at 19 in the fourth set but UP racked up five straight points as Michael Jordan Arda sent the game into match point.

Fr. Martin’s Cup: Archers bow to Stags

torres_fmc_22feb2009Catch up was the name of the game. For majority of the game, the De La Salle Green Archers played catch up to the undefeated San Sebastian College Stags. The Taft-based squad had a few tastes of the lead but they were unable to hold on to it as they finally bowed down to the SSC Stags, 66-71.

The first quarter ended with the Archers trailing 18-12 but the Stags didn’t content themselves with it as they made seven straight points, including a shot from rainbow territory, to open the 2nd quarter to give them their biggest lead of the ballgame, 25-12. With 6 minutes to go in the first half, Gab Banal finally broke DLSU’s scoreless stretch by scoring two points from the charity line. The score being 14-25 in favor of the Stags, San Sebastian continued their offensive attack for the remainder of the quarter, scoring 12 more points that included a couple more of threes. During this time, the Archers struggled to fight back, scoring 14 points to end the first half at 28 points, against Baste’s 37.

Going back into the court for the 2nd half of the game, …

After two seasons, La Salle is back from where they belong this decade, the finals.

The Lady Archers unleashed their offensive might in the fourth set to oust Adamson, 25-16, 23-25, 25-22, 25-23, and clinch the first championship slot in the UAAP women’s volleyball tournament at the The Arena, San Juan.

Stephanie Mercado uncorked 17 hits while Jacq Alarca and Michelle Datuin added 15 and 13 markers respectively to help La Salle in making a return trip to the finals.

The Lady Archers’ last appearance to the finals was in the 2005-06 season when they completed a ‘three-peat’ in a star-studded line-up bannered by Maureen Penetrante, Desiree Hernandez and Chie Saet.

In the best-of-three finals, La Salle will face the winner of the much-anticipated “Final Four” match-up today between defending champion Far Eastern University and third-ranked University of Santo Tomas.

The duel between the Lady Tamaraws and Tigresses, two of the winningest women’s volleyball squads in the league, is set at 4 p.m.

La Salle wins UAAP Men’s Tennis Title

By Jonas Terrado (www.mb.com.ph)

La Salle completed its mastery over University of Santo Tomas by scoring a 4-1 win to capture the 71st UAAP men’s tennis title Friday at the Rizal Memorial Tennis Center.

Led by co-Most Valuable Players PJ Tierro and Irwin de Guzman, the Green Archers overpowered their rivals to sweep their best-of-three title series.

It was La Salle’s first championship since 2006. This time, however, the championship was much sweeter.

The Tigers were just a win away from winning the title via an eight-game sweep. But Tierro, a Davis Cup veteran, and company beat them in the final day of the elims to force a best-of-three championship.

It was a huge disappointment for the España-based netters as they blew away the opportunity of scoring a three-peat. That also denied them of scoring a rare double sweep of the tournament after its women counterparts bagged the title last week.

Tierro, the country’s top-ranked netter, combined with Jandrick de Castro in edging out Gerald Pinili and Roman Floreza, 6-0, 6-1, in the second doubles match while de Guzman trounced Michael Narvaez, 6-0, 6-3, in the first singles match.

Also winning for the Archers were John Will Baldonado who beat Raymund Villarete, 6-4, …
