Even without their main backcourt tandem, the De La Salle Green Archers easily disposed the University of San Carlos Cebu Warriors, 71-51 to advance to the next round of the 2008 Philippine Collegiate Championships at The Arena in San Juan today.

The Archers will await the winner of tomorrow’s match-up between University of the Visayas and University of the East in the round of eight on Sunday. UAAP champion Ateneo as well as San Beda and Mapua have already moved on to the next phase of the tournament having beaten their respective foes earlier.

Despite the huge winning margin, the Archers played sluggishly the entire game with 19 turnovers and a 40% clip from the foul line. According to coach Franz Pumaren, the team was not able to fully prepare for this tournament. Aside from academic commitments, several Archers are currently playing in the ongoing PBL conference thus they were unable to practice as a complete unit.

La Salle, who were without guards Simon Atkins and L.A. Revilla were led by veteran JV Casio with 13 points. The team also received significant contributions from Hyram Bagatsing and Peejay Barua.

Shakey’s V-League: Lady Stags foil Archers anew, gain finals

San Sebastian went through another wringer and like the last time out, came out of it a winner, nipping La Salle, 21-25, 25-17, 20-25, 28-26, 15-9, to barge into the championship round of the Shakey’s V-League second conference at The Arena in San Juan City today.

Jennelyn Belen took over from Charisse Ancheta to set the plays for San Sebastian in the fourth and fifth sets, which the Stags won in close fashions to complete their two-game sweep of the three-time champions.

San Sebastian also bucked La Salle’s season-high 22 blocks with a flurry of kills, including 23 from top-hitter Laurence Ann Latigay, who scored on quick plays and power hits to finish with 27. She also had four blocks.

“La Salle‘s blocking was impressive and I gambled on Belen because Ancheta played below par. It’s a good thing that our offense clicked in the fourth and fifth sets,” said SSC coach Roger Gorayeb.

Guest player Suzanne Roces backed Latigay with 17 points while Analyn Joy Benito tossed in 13 hits for San Sebastian, which reached the finals of the league, sponsored by Shakey’s Pizza, for the fourth time.

Shakey’s V-League Semis – La Salle drops Game 1

The San Sebastian Lady Stags exacted revenge over the La Salle Lady Archers, 25-21, 25-19, 22-25, 20-25, 15-9, to gain a 1-0 lead in their Final Four duel of the Shakey’s V-League Semis at the San Juan Arena yesterday.
Lou Ann Latigay dished out a conference-best 30 hits but the Lady Stags needed to toughen up in the deciding set and cash in on the Lady Archers’ errors and a mental lapse to pound out the victory.
La Salle appeared headed to completing a remarkable comeback from 0-2 down by taking the first three points in the fifth set but libero Melissa Gohing failed to go out of the court in time after she was replaced for a violation.
The Lady Stags, who lost to the Lady Archers, 18-25, 25-23, 25-18, 25-16, in the elims, took charge from there, 8-7, then hung tough to clinch the victory. Full story at http://www.v-league.ph

MVP Nerissa Bautista came through with another power game for Adamson, which also drew inspiration from a pair of rookies to stretch its win run to four after an opening day loss to surge ahead of the eight-team field in the league sponsored by Shakey’s Pizza.

“Nene (Bautista) has been playing inspired game,” said Adamson coach Dulce Pante. “We’re winning because we train very hard and it shows in our rookies.”

The loss was La Salle’s second straight after sweeping its first four games, dropping the Lady Archers to second, their outright semis bid derailed for the second straight time.

Bautista rammed in 22 hits, including 19 kills, while Angela Benting added 15 points for Adamson, which also drew a combined 10-point effort from Paulina Soriano, a product of Rondon High School-QC., and Angelica Quinlog of Antipolo.
