franz-interview"It was uncalled for coming from a senior board rep and I don't think that is the right statement."

This is Coach Franz Pumaren's reaction on the recent statements made by Far Eastern University Board Representative Anton Montinola that came out in the Philippine Daily Inquirer regarding the decision of the National Basketball Referees Organization (NABRO) to suspend referee Bryan Tabanag, who officiated in the DLSU-FEU game last week, which the Archers won, 73-62.

"It is unfair for us, it is unfair for the La Salle community, it is unfair on the part of the officials also," Coach Pumaren pointed out before the press after the Green Archers' lopsided win over the NU Bulldogs last Saturday

The Inquirer reported in its July 18 story that there will be no replay of the FEU-La Salle match despite the sanctions imposed by NABRO on one of its referees. Montinola was quoted in the same article, as saying that "The FEU community has been victimized by this brazen act to manipulate the outcome of the game."

“Pardon the expression, but definitely we were screwed. I’m glad the commissioner had the [courage] to act accordingly. There is no room in the UAAP for behavior of this sort. We should leave it to the conscience of La Salle. I think their win has an asterisk attached to it," added Montinola in the said article.

"When you talk about conscience, that is kind of deep, when you look back at '91," Coach Pumaren stressed. Pumaren was referring to the controversial UAAP finals between the Archers and the Tamaraws in 1991, which was decided by the then UAAP Board in favor of the Tamaraws, despite an earlier ruling by the Basketball Association of the Philippines and the FIBA awarding the championship to the Green Archers.

"I couldn't understand what's the big fuss about the decision... It was clearly stated in one of our meetings. It's automatic once you hold the jersey, it's technical foul. Is he complaining about the technical foul on Glen Capacio? It was shown on TV, remorseful si Glen (Capacio) because he knows he really made a mistake shouting at the referee. Is he complaining about non-call on (Benedict) Fernandez when he took the shot? How can you call a foul when you're the one landing close to a player?" explained the multi-titled tactician.

Coach Pumaren noted that DLSU also had its fair share of bad officiating. "If everybody is gonnna complain about bad calls or non-calls, count me in. I think everybody suffered the same fate already. But at least, give us credit (for the win)."

  1. I’m so glad that Coach Franz has finally answered all the innuendos blasted our way courtesy of Mr. Montinola of FEU. Somebody had to stand up for us and who better than Coach Franz himself. This should be the last time that the word “conscience” comes out of Mr. Montinola’s mouth and directed our way. Kudos to Coach Franz!

  2. And why would Montinola drag the name of La Salle in the mess when it was the ref’s accountability?

  3. Mabuhay ka coach Franz!!

  4. FEU Tangaraws have not only one but two championships decided in the boardroom and both against La Salle. So if there is one school that symbolizes being Asterisk Winners, it’s the Crayola University.

  5. Montinola really went overboard with his statements. The article by Jasmine Payo by itself wouldn’t have been really controversial, had it not been for his unfounded statements. I think Montinola tried not to be blunt, but his choice of words betrayed him. His insinuation that DLSU had something to do with the bad officiating is very irresponsible. His use of the word “conscience” is self-destructive. The win with an asterisk? Come on, it applies more to FEU! Championship with an asterisk. They didn’t win the 1991 championship on the playing court. That they will have to explain forever.

I also don’t understand Narvasa. Why is he so keen on DLSU? Other games have also been marred by bad officiating so why single out the DLSU-FEU match which was clearly won by La Salle? 9 points for crying out loud! First game, it was the ID incident. First win of La Salle, it is the officiating. I wouldn’t be surprised if there comes out another issue with regard to DLSU’s win over UST and NU. He is just busy trying to rewind the tapes.

And if Narvasa is going to reprimand the referees, I think it should have been done internally. This may be considered speculating, but I really don’t think the sanctioning of the referee is to improve officiating. It was more to taint the win, eventhough he says otherwise.

Besides, it was the referee’s judgment call, so why penalize him (Although, it was unwise for the referee to admit to his inadequacy) As Coach Franz said, everyone has been victimized by bad officiating. And I think everyone will be bound to have his share of bad officiating. It is part of basketball. Although there are rules, the interpretation and the implementation of these rules rests on human beings, who have their own discretion and discernment. Not to mention that everything happens at the blink of an eye. They are not like judges who have all the time to study the case before them. Referees will always call it how they saw it. Persons affected will always disagree with or question the call. In whatever league from baranggay to NBA, there will always be good calls, bad calls and non-calls. Live with it.

  6. Anton Montinola’s talking about conscience?

This coming from a guy who has a team playing in the UAAP but watches and openly supports Ateneo games. What a great motivator!

A person with such warped sense of values shouldn’t be talking about conscience.

  7. Anton Montinola has no moral authority to talk about conscience, which is something he doesn’t have. Basta pag dating sa La Salle daig pa nito ang private investigator sa pagbabantay sa bawat galaw ng DLSU. Some people simply can’t accept defeat like true sportsmen.

  8. FEU and Ateneo are sister schools

  9. They may have tie-ups here and there, but are they sister schools? I know FEU is owned by the Montinola family and Ateneo is run by the Jesuits.

  10. Yes they are sister schools. Montinola is from Ateneo =)

  11. See U 2nd round Mr. Tinola…

  12. mr. tinola has no balls to confront NABRO.

  13. with feu at 2nd tied with dlsu, let’s see if montinola files a protest regarding long’s and burke’s jerseys when the eagles won over up. similar case with san beda’s ekwe when they clobered csb, but it seems that up doesn’t want to file a protest, i don’t know if it’s possible for other uaap teams to protest due to technicalities even if they’re not involved with the game, watch out for montinola looking for loop holes.

  14. oh, i forgot.. montinola’s an alumnus of ateneo, so i guess he won’t be filing a protest.

  15. Nice post, you got some good points there – thank you.

  16. Ateneo has a very strong team this year. Why don’t these guys just shut up and let their team win it?

With all their howling, their gonna taint their own victory. The actions of Narvasa and co are laying a foundation for questionable board/back room shenanigans that will, in the end, only undermine the actual strength, depth and caliber of their own team! Talk about wanting it so badly….

FEU should ask Mr. Montinola who he really cheers for given his duality. Maybe in conscience Mr. Montinola should relinquish his representative position for FEU given his open support for his alma mater? Don’t the guys from FEU wonder about their head honchos true “colors”?

Geesh talk about an up hillclimb and DLSU’s off court battles! Ateneo does not need the extras in the form of Narvasa and Montinola to win and yet so early in the season these guys have already shown their hand… How pathetic! The stuff only Ateneans can justify. Oh well if they can plagarize the Canadian anthem, Montinola should be even less of a conscience issue!

  17. Ooops sorry identity crisis c”,)

  18. i was there during the dlsu-feu game and i saw everything from the grabbing of the jersey and capacio realizing he made a mistake after getting the technical. that’s why i don’t understand montinola coming out and talking about this game the way he did. his own coach knew he crossed the line. montinola is a sore loser. he always was and he always will be. he should just sit down and keep his mouth shut. he really should. i can’t even understand how he can have the guts to talk about wins with asterisks. must we remind him of 1991? his probelem is that he talks too much without thinking. so to anton montinola – shut the f_ _k up!!!

  19. dont forget the FEU 2004 championship* as well

both of these championship* banners are displayed in their gym as if naman sobrang proud sila dito.

  20. i remembered in 1999 or 2000, after FEU lost to DLSU, sobrang pikon ni Montinola nakipaghamon ng away dun sa isang DLSU supporter. Hahaha

  21. sorry i did not catch the ateneo-u.p. game. blacksheep_brat, u mean the 2 americans wore different uniforms? why didn’t narvasa or the refs see that? oh i forgot, narvasa is from ateneo.

  22. Haters will always haunt DLSU. Let them whine until they look stupid doing it. Let the boys play their game and quit the powerplay which the authorities of the UAAP are doing.

  23. Masyado sila malandi eh, pinapahaba lang yung usapan. Pag tapos na ok na yun.

  24. well, if its a conscience their talking about….who cares!!! the la salle community knows we won fair and square and that’s the bottom line.

    ANIMO LA SALLE!!!!

  25. ANIMO LA SALLE! I’am an avid fan from Davao City of DLSU Green Archers ever since I watched UAAP. And I know the history between the rivalry of DLSU and FEU! I believe that Coach Franz and his boys deserves the win over FEU during their 1st meeting in UAAP Season 71. The best talaga si Coach Franz! They have the deepest bench right now and I think Mr. Tinola should bow his head to the great team LA SaLLe!

  26. FEU is not crayola university..more of KALABASA university! i think la salle is always kawawa..pinagkaisahang isuspend..id rule..lhat na lang! everyone’s just envious of lasalle kc khit wlang star player nag chachampion pa rin..it’s because lasalle has the best coach!go franz!

  27. Montinola’s talking about conscience? Maybe we should ask him what happened to his maid.

  28. Montinola? His maid? Go! La Salle! Go! Patwarin mo na Coach! God Bless! patrick

  29. i don’t understand why Ateneans try so hard to beat us Lasallians… we’re just too damn good, i guess… let’s not sink to their levels… we be the better men and women and let’s show them that we rock this town! Animo La SALLE!!

  30. Why is it that if the call of the officials favored us they are always reacting/complaining? If you’re going to watch our games, practically they sometimes wants us to loose, but we still managed to win. I think bro. oca must say something about this. we are just playing our game and it is unreasonable and inappropriate for a board member of the uaap to say such things. I say we come win back-to-back again, maybe they’ll band us forever.. keep winning coach… HAVE NO MERCY and please, DON’T LET ANY BLUE BIRDS FROM SOMEWHERE IN KATIPUNAN FLY…. CONTINUE FEEDING BALLS… they love it… GO BLUE FAGGOTS EAT THOSE BALLS! ANIMO LA SALLE!

  31. ANTON MONTINOLA GO TO H…LL…..Sh..t you…..Shut up if you don’t have anything sensible to say…ANTON MONTINOLA ROT IN H…LL………..ANTON MONTINOLA YOU CAN NEVER PUT DOWN THE SPIRIT OF THE GREEN ARCHERS ….WE WON….YOU LOST ….WE re in the FINALS and you re NOT …WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOH…poor you POOR YOU …..ANIMO LASALLE !!!!!!!!!

  32. Eh sira ulo naman ‘yan si Montinola, why even bother to listen to him? He hates La Salle with a passion. When La Salle wins 2 straight against Ateneo, watch him suffer a total meltdown.

    Montinola, sira ulo!
