Postgame Bullets: DLSU 64 UE 66
Posted by Nel- Yet another loss, this time to playoff contender UE. The Archers are now entering uncharted territory, following an unprecedented 5th consecutive loss to fall to a 4-7 record. The best the Archers can finish is an even 7-7 IF they win their last 3 games against UST (Thu Sept 3), FEU (Sat Sept 5), and NU (Thu Sept 10).
- Making the final 4 is no longer within the Archers' control. UE has the inside track for the 3rd Final 4 slot, and the last slot will be contested by the Archers and the UST Growling Tigers. UST plays NU (Sun Aug 30), the Archers next Thursday, Adamson (Sun Sept 6), and UE (Thu Sept 10).
- The first half was lackluster, to say the least. The Archers allowed UE to get off to a hot, 7-0, which UE built up to a 17 point lead before a spirited closing minute by the Archers cut it down to a 13 point deficit at the half, 27-40. A few of the UE points came because of a lack of concentration, as was the case with the Llagas field goal with less than 5 seconds to go. Arvie was so focused on watching Llagas that he neglected to keep an eye on the ball, didn't see the fastbreak pass coming, and Llagas was able to catch and shoot just before the halftime buzzer sounded.
- The second half was much more competitive, and the Archers' stiffer defenses held UE to 26 points after yielding 40 in the first half. The aggressive defenses partially neutralized Paul Lee, who tallied only 13 points, but the UE inside players Llagas and Espiritu had their way, combining for 37 points. Only 5 UE players scored in the game.
- With Simon out again, pg duties were shared by Bader, Hyram, and Joel. Joel played more minutes, and the offense was noticeably more fluid with him acting as the ball handler and distributor. Joel assisted on several baskets, and scored 10 points as he provided the quickness and competent ball distribution that has been lacking so far this season.
- Several travelling errors were called against the Archers, notably Joshua, Hyram, and Peejay. While some of them were debatable, the Archers will need to practice their basic moves to avoid turning the ball over again.
- Among the veterans, Hyram and Maui were the most active. Maui scored repeatedly on gutsy penetrations, and Hyram connected on 3 triples to fuel the rally. Joshua also scored 10, Kish pumped in 8 points. Peejay was a non-factor with 4 points, and James was practically invisible.
- In hindsight, if the Archers had played the first half with the same intensity they exhibited in the final 2 quarters, the result would have most probably been different.
- We don't want to complain about the officiating, but a dubious call cost the team the opportunity to tie the game at 66-all. Hyram was fouled, sank the basket, and should have been awarded a bonus ft, but the referee insisted that the foul was before the shot. No continuation. And we thought that this season the officials would allow the players to decide the result of the game.
- It's still possible, but the Archers must now win all the games to have a chance to contend with UST for the last slot. Our stands were fairly well populated, showing that many faithful still KEEP THE FAITH!

Disappointing Season for the Archers…. Grabe! The team that I admired most lost its glory.
August 30th, 2009 - 00:29
The Veterans? I think they’re not playing well obviously not very effective.. I like the rookies more especially Samuel Marata, more effective than the veterans. Oh Tolentino and Arvie Bringas, really cool also.
August 30th, 2009 - 01:21
painful loss
August 30th, 2009 - 03:53
I saw the game and I think the UAAP board should review the tapes just to make sure if the referees are really qualified or if they were “fair” with the calls made, is this possible?
August 30th, 2009 - 06:44
UAAP Refs. RUINED DLSU!!!
Nice game archers…KEEP THE FAITH, kaya pa yan.
ANIMO LA SALLE!
August 30th, 2009 - 07:06
They’re so predictable when they play their offense “basado” Nung 4th quarter, nung puro 3 pt field goals na ung ginagawa iba(bagatsing and tolentino), 3 pts din naman ung isang player (barua) at marami pang ibang instances (puro blocks ng UE) –> tas puro turnorvers pa “lack of discipline” (travelling.. bad passes.. dribble..) Alam ko, wlang perfect pag in terms of basketball. Kaso, hindi naman sana ganitong ka imperfect :p Good for the archers me iba talagang nag step up habang wala ang key player nila kaso ung iba naman… haay.. maging worth naman kayo cheering for. ._. animo…
August 30th, 2009 - 07:10
the team still has no focus, no energy and no defense? even if their season is on the line? why not let the rookies play more minutes after this game forward? they could gain valuable experience that they could carry the rest of the season or to the next season. we have nothing to lose naman since the veterans are not playing that well (sadly, until now). offense is more fluid with joel in the point than malabes, bagatsing and mangahas.
Animo La Salle…
August 30th, 2009 - 08:30
I was at the game and it was a tale of two halves. The first half, the team walked right into the UE trap zone defense. They moved the ball slowly and forced so many bad shots that missed I surprised we were still in the game going into the half. In the second half, we finally started to speed up the game and that made all the difference in the world! The boys ran hard and shot well challenging UE to everything. Why we didn’t play that way all throughout the game mystifies me but I’m not the coaching staff. At the end, ref or no ref, we made too many mistakes that cost the win. There were at least five or six travelling calls throughout the game and the last one was a travel call that turned the ball over to UE with 0.7 seconds left that sealed our fate.
It was an exciting game that could have gone either way. I’m sad we lost but I’m proud of how we didn’t quit. Say what you will, these players gave it their all and deserve recognition for their efforts. We just didn’t catch the breaks we needed to win.
August 30th, 2009 - 09:30
it’s not in our hands now… win the last 3 games, and hope the other team falters. I’m still hoping for a cinderella-finish for the archers, and I hope in the last 3 games of the elimination, the archers will prove themselves worthy to have the name of our patron saint, “La Salle”, embedded on their chest.
August 30th, 2009 - 09:30
disappointing talaga ang veterans natin…esp. Mangahas, Barua and Malabes! i hope wala na sila sa line-up next year…anyway, till next season..ANIMO LA SALLE!!!
August 30th, 2009 - 10:25
i think those three (mangahas, barua and malabes) are still with the team next year (kindly correct me if im wrong). i know only bagatsing is no eligible because of age factor.
for mangahas, barua and malabes, kindly give your spots to more deserving players if you’re still going to play with the same intensity (which is actually non-existent) next year. their performance is really dissapointing this year.
August 30th, 2009 - 12:21
I agree with the observations that the rookies should be given the burden of leadership now. A difficult step but we have seen that the older boys just don’t have it in their nature to act as the team principals. I still will watch the next 3 games and will wait in suspense for a win. Go for 7-7! Go La Salle!
August 30th, 2009 - 12:33
yeah, dapat next year si Marata, Bringas, Tolentino, Webb and Andrada ang starting 5. and more playing time to Banal and Maui. Useless pa din ang veterans natin up to now, matatapos na ang 2nd round and wala pa din tayo panalo
Aral na nga lang,Finals na next week and sayang lang ang panonood namin ng live yesterday kahit madami projects.sana hindi nalang kami nanood
im proud of our School and still proud of being a La Sallian! but, its HARD to take PRIDE in this Green Archers TEAM!
ANIMO DLSU!

it is JUST basketball!

“Hyram was fouled, sank the basket, and should have been awarded a bonus ft, but the referee insisted that the foul was before the shot. No continuation.”
– what the? sayang un! tsktsk.. yet, another loss.. kaya p yan.. let’s go for 7-7..
ONE for AN1MO!!

TOUGH TIMES NEVER LAST. TAFT PEOPLE DO!!!
AN1MO LA SALLE!
August 30th, 2009 - 13:38
bad call by the refs, i believe that hyram’s shot in the last seconds of the game should have counted plus a bonus free throw. wake up james mangahas. the team needs your offense and your leadership.
animo la salle! hoping for the best outcomes of the remaning games!
August 30th, 2009 - 14:53
EVERYONE thought that hyram’s shot should be counted! EVERYONE including boom. what the hell?! can we file a protest? but i really don’t think montinalo as president of the board will ever grant a request for the review of the game. i thought NABRO refs are out..
August 30th, 2009 - 15:21
Petitioning to let the rookies play! Let Barua, Malabes, Manghahas (or better can we trade them?) sit it out… Let’s make it a fun game instead!
Let Arvie, Marata, Tolentino, Banal, Maui, Webb and the blocking machine ‘Andrada’ play instead. would love to see them develop to stronger players
August 30th, 2009 - 15:27
i think the issue about the referees’ call is the answer to those people’s accusation that we are buying games that’s why we are winning.. if we are doing such, then why would we be in this situation right now? i know this is an old issue already but this issue made a mark to several people (esp. after dlsu’s games vs. feu last year)..
we are not capable of doing such and we will not do such thing just for us to win.. i hope this will end the issue about la salle’s “closeness” to referees..
we are not cheaters.. we play with all our hearts..
animo la salle!
August 30th, 2009 - 15:39
si mangahas, matagal na dapat tinaggal yan.. ewan ko kung sino ang kapit nyan.. di ko pa nakitang gumawa ng maganda yan sa mga importanteng laro..
August 30th, 2009 - 15:48
It was a season of disappointment for the green archers but atleast the coaching staff is now aware of the players that they need to train a lot tougher. Guys like Joshua webb, andrada, bringas, kish Co, these are very promising players. bader stepped up being their star player now, but i do believe that this isn’t enough, he needs guys like la revilla, reliable wing man, a cardona type of play, ren2x kind of shooting, a slasher like yeo, dunker like rico
August 30th, 2009 - 16:52
We are in the mess we are in because we lost to UP and Adamson. While I blame the referees for this game loss versus UE, we failed to do what we had to do and now, we have UST has to lose two games in order for us to have a chance and we have to win all our games. Maybe, it is time we played the rookies and develop them for next year. Our seniors aren’t showing any pride, passion or intelligence on court anyway. Let’s see Webb, Manguera, Banal, Andrada, Tolentino, Bringas, Mendoza and Marata more often to complement Maui Villanueva, Kish Co, Simon Atkins, Hyram Bagatsing and Peejay Barua. It is time to look forward to the future.
August 30th, 2009 - 16:57
It’s a bitter pill to swallow for us not reaching the Final 4. The team should look forward and prepare for the next seasons. The coaching staff should be more aggressive this time in recruiting talented big men who will back-up Bringas & Andrada.
Over the years, the center & power forward positions are our weak points. And maybe hire a Big Man coach to focus developing the new recruits. Get rid of Ferdinand, Mangahas & Malabes and put them back on Team B. In college basketball, you need highly talented big men to get those rebounds, block shots, and post-up plays.
Rookies should be given more playing time in case DLSU will play in other leagues during the UAAP post season. Again, it was inexperience that did it for us this season.
ANIMO LA SALLE!
August 30th, 2009 - 18:13
I think James Mangahas, Pjee Barua and Bader Malabes should step up, they should lead the young rookies of La Salle.. well though Mangahas’ shooting rhythm has gone cold, there’s still chance for the three veteran scorers of DLSU to bring their “A” game next time.. Remember, DLSU GREEN ARCHERS doesnt need a starplayer alone, but at least a leader who can step up, motivate and inspire the team to never give up and fight hard.. DO or Die situation for the basketeers! this is the time to “Play Like there is no more tomorrow.”
August 30th, 2009 - 20:25
those who accuse the veterans i’m not one of them, but as i can see its true, yeh its bader, peejay and james why are they still playing if they keep it up like that… i don’t what’s going on with the coaching staff maybe they should listen to us, let the rookies play the big and reliable and promising guards give their hell of a shot!!! too bad for simon, ferdinand where is he? if LA plays or somehow rico (he’s a Pro now at Purefoods congrats!) will play for his last eligible year it would be a real good to make a difference this season. next season we should expect a shocking green archers that can hit all the teams with their accurate/unbreakable arrows not inaccurate/broken arrows!!! play still to win, if there’s no chance at present then maybe a good hope in the future of the upcoming seasons. ANIMO DERECHO LA SALLE
August 30th, 2009 - 21:47
sit the three stooges down and bench them the last 3 games coach! please… its so obvious that given they playing time and exposure you’ve given them, they never showed any heart or poise. these 3 supposed vets are a disgrace and should’nt even be assured of slots to our line up next year.
they are only good on hoisting bricks and airballs! i’ve never seen a combo in the entire LS basketball history perform and succk big time. what a waste!
August 30th, 2009 - 22:34
I still not giving up on my faith to our beloved archers, and even if we will not make it this year, i do hope the lessons that we’ve learned this season would help us to grow in terms of believing that we will certainly achieve the kind of glory that we held for so long. ANIMO LA SALLE!!!
August 30th, 2009 - 22:39
just wanna share this one that i saw from a site..
“everytime la salle plays bad,
malabes play bader”
so true..
and during the ateneo-la salle games,
ateneo said “malabes is our sixth man on the court!”
he contributed a lot to ateneo’s win..
August 30th, 2009 - 22:49
I really pity James/Peejay/Barua since they’re the one’s who will be remembered as the “veterans who couldn’t carry lasalle” but even if this season might be a lost cause already (let’s be realistic, the chances are definitely NOT in our favor) I don’t think the 3 should be benched completely. Maybe just reverse the roles (the 3 coming off the bench, to back up the new guys) and hopefully the guys that are “hard workers” get more playing time *cough* Ferdinand *cough cough*
If i remember right the 3 who are getting blamed right now will still be eligable to play next year, maybe they can go back to playing a support role where they were successful before and let the new kids carry the team. Too bad Hyram won’t be back next year, I think everyone kinda overlooked how well he’s played for us this year, hopefully he has a nice career if he goes pro.
August 30th, 2009 - 22:53
TAN, I like that starting lineup. That should be the starting lineup for the team. Forget the veterans, actually they shouldn’t be called veterans because they aren’t playing like any. I was looking forward to a great season of La Salle basketball only to be frustrated after each loss.
Sorry to say it but I’m already looking forward to next season. I really hope that the so called veterans graduate. I don’t care if they still have a year left. It’s time to rebuild, let’s rebuild on this current batch of rookies.
Animo La Salle!
August 30th, 2009 - 22:54
Guys lets move on. Let’s not be too hard on these guys. Just like us, I’m they all wanted to win badly as well and they can only do so much. Let’s accept this and just support the team in their coming games. All is not lost yet.
August 31st, 2009 - 00:04
Up until yesterday’s game, I was at least pleased with how the officiating went, compared to last year’s collection of three blind mice. Yesterday, the mice returned. It was so unfortunate that a game like that had to be decided by referee’s calls.
That call on Hyram was not the only case of bad officiating. The warding off foul on Pari llagas in midcourt, and the four point play of Val Acuña (he released the ball already and the contact had no more bearing on the shot) are just some specifics.
In general, the officiating was inconsistent. Calls made at one end were not made at the other end. I was with my high school son (not yet a La Sallite), who was without bias on the game, and still he commented: “Dad, why was that called a foul while the same thing happened on the other side and it wasn’t?” That sums it all up which prompted me to write this.
Not to take anything away from UE, they deserve to win. But I think the referees made us lose. Frustrating really, but lets just go back to the game. All my shouting yesterday was for naught and we cannot protest the judgement calls of the blind anyway.
We played lousy defense in the first half, and then played great D in the second. One thing I was happy about yesterday (which I wasn’t happy about the whole season), was the point guard play. Joel Tolentino finally showed up. And Joel finally showed his critics that we were right choosing him instead of some other point guard (from our school system or not).
Joel also had a couple of botched plays (crucial like that turnover under the basket off a drive, and that steal off him at halfcourt). I never blame the players and Joel is still a rookie. Give him a break. Another rookie mistake that turned out crucial for us was the last second pass to Pari Llagas under the basket. Arvie Bringas wasn’t looking at the ball (a Cardinal mistake) and it was two points more before the break. We lost by ONLY TWO POINTS didn’t we?
If you analyze the game really though, what did us in was STILL our lack of the point guard spot. Franz was trying very hard to give Joel short rests, as he knew, he would have to play Bader and Hyram at point some time or another. It was very unfortunate timing that Joel had to rest as Hyram was waxing hot. That substitution resulted into Hyram playing point, taking away his opportunities to “heat check”, meaning to shoot until the shots won’t fall anymore. As a shooter, I know that feeling. When you’re hot, you’re hot.
In stretches of the game where we didn’t have Joel at point, that was where UE struck. It’s easy to observe this really, as that was what I was watching for at the game. Bader played point during the first half and we were down 13 at the half right? The loss of Simon Atkins to injury was telling for us yesterday.
Sadly also, the veterans James, Peejay, and Bader were not there on offense. If only one of them showed up yesterday, we would have won handily, specially, Peejay, where a lot of play executions freed him up for several jumpshot opportunities. None fell with regularity.
My heart goes out to the boys, the community and ourselves. Had we won that game, the complexion of the next three games would have changed for us. Now, things are no longer solely within our control, as we have to win our last three games and hope UST loses the same number of games.
But don’t fret La Salle. I still liked what I saw yesterday. Joel has finally emerged. This should give him confidence in our last three (and hopefully not our final three) games this season. The box scores also show that we were working cohesively in the second half yesterday.
It should have been a feel good loss yesterday, but really, it WASN’T. If only because the playing field was not level yesterday.
ANIMO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
August 31st, 2009 - 00:30
Great game …Hyram was his usual too bad he wont be back next year .I think he is the only player that showed consistentcy all year! He is quiet and calm.He just does his stuff. No showboating! Listens to the coach and does what the coaches ask him to do. He will be missed!
August 31st, 2009 - 00:57
i agree that hyram will be missed, sayang talaga atleast one year pa sana. anyway, we’ll still have the likes of kish co. i don’t know, but even a bit inconsistent, whenever he’s on the court, there’s some luck bound to happen! nice saves and even though some of his shots looked “too forced”, they go in!
August 31st, 2009 - 02:09
Next game will be the determining factor if the team will be giving out more playing time to the rookies.
A win will still allow the veterans a bigger share of playing time for the succeeding games since it will mean that we are still in the hunt for the last Final 4 slot. If not, then bye bye for the Final 4 slot and to the playing time for the veterans on succeeding games.
I wish I’m wrong on this but we’re almost done with the varsity basketball campaign this season.
Positives for this season are:
1. excellent effort by the team in recruitment,
2. very promising athletes like Arvie, Marata, Tolentino, Andrada, Banal and Manguera,
3. a ton of a load of experience by the younger players on Pumaren’s system and from the veterans,
4. some of more talented prospects that may join the team next year, and
5. most importantly, there will still be another year (and more years) to look ahead on and cheer on for our beloved Green Archers.
ANIMO LA SALLE!
August 31st, 2009 - 03:53
We have been spoiled for 11 years, and maybe this is just a rude awakening for all of us – for players and supporters alike.
I have been witness to our beloved school’s ups and downs for the past two decades:
- the excruciating loss to Ateneo in 88
- the grand slam from 89 to 91
- the string of finals losses to UST in the 90′s
- the glorious 4-peat from 98 to 01
- the shock defeat to Ateneo in 02
- the resurgence in 04
- the vindication in 07
- the humbling setback again to Ateneo in 08
While physical talent can certainly help you win championships, there is one thing that sets apart our championships teams from our less successful teams – DESIRE.
And one can notice it in the eyes and body language of the players – especially if you see the games live (like what I have done for more than 50% of DLSU’s games for the past 21 years). Jun Limpot had it; Mark Telan did not. Renren, Joseph and JV had it; this current batch of veterans does not.
Did you see Hyram and Joel’s fire and passion in the last game? Now compare it to what you saw in the eyes of Bader and James.
I hope that my take on things here would not be misconstrued as player bashing. These are mere observations from my point of view. At any rate, and like what I said in my last post, there will always be poetic justice in the games. Basketball imitates life, doesn’t it?
That given, I like what I see in our team for the future (sans some moments of arrogance, i.e., that Webb kick/salute and Barua ala Arana dance of joy). Behave like La Sallians and we win as La Sallians!
Rektikano! Fight, Team, Fight!
August 31st, 2009 - 05:49
sana yung other mangahas, who is playing for Mapua right now (i think), na lang ang ni-recruit ng team. he is a better player than our mangahas. i think younger brother nya yun.
in case they really want to win badly, well, it doesnt show in any of their games. we could see naman in their plays that they dont have the energy or the passion / drive to win those games. i could have been more happy if the team lost because the other team is really good despite the intensity and hardwork of the players. but that was not really the case…the vets dont have the intensity and energy kahit at least defend the ball or opposing teams man lang…no offense na nga, no defense pa…pano na yun?
take a look at the case of ferdinand, wala talaga mapapala sa game nya…so he is already gone deep to the bench in favor of bringas and the other big men…sana ganun din sa ibang vets (like barua, mangahas and malabes), let the rookies play na lang so they could gain the necessary experience for future tournament / games.
oh, well…every team cant really stay at the top every season / time. may ups and downs pa din…pana-panahon lang…and this season really is the downside of it. hoping that the team could end up at 7-7 at the end of the elimination round.
August 31st, 2009 - 08:06
It is shaping up to be a 5-9 final slate for the Archers this season as I predicted earlier, with a season-ending win vs NU as our only real chance for a win in the last 3 outings. A “battle to the death” vs UST this Thursday will be very interesting to watch as both teams are evenly-matched and fighting for survival. I really cannot see us winning against FEU. I stick to my forecast of 5-9 and finishing at 6-8 would still be a good result this season considering the present level of competence of the players. For next season we should focus more on sharpening our fundamentals. Too many errors last game. Travelling, passing and positioning errors were in abundance. Sure, there were bad calls, but overall our team gave UE a lot of TO points too.
August 31st, 2009 - 11:56
@pats
very well said.
September 2nd, 2009 - 09:26
Now I understand why many La Sallians keep on bashing the so-called veterans of the team. I can’t blame them. They felt the veterans are a great disappointment. They thought they have become more of liabilities than assets to the team. Do these guys really deserve such horrible attacks and indignities?
In the last game vs UE, the trio of Mangahas (0), Malabes (0), and Barua (4) got clobbered badly by their UE counterparts – Llagas (22), Espiritu (15), and Lee (13)in terms of point production. A whopping 50-4! Had Mangahas and Malabes just contributed a field goal each, the Archers would have won the game. But no, they simply went kaput despite their long exposure, as is usual in their previous games. Should they be retained in next year’s team? Judging from the comments I’ve read here, a great majority favor their exclusion. In the corporate world, unproductive and non-performing staff are shown the door if the company is to operate efficiently and survive. But, of course, some will argue about “due process”.
The team management better realize what the sentiments of La Sallians and Green Archers fans are, in rebuilding the team for the future if it aims to recover its lost glory.
September 2nd, 2009 - 10:50
Great statistical point verdant rooter!
Bottom line is the UE veterans stepped up to help their team win and ours didn’t! Veteran players who have seen the fires of previous battles are expected to contribute because (supposedly)they’ve been there. Now, if all they are going to bring to the game is verbal encouragement to the younger players then they should shed their basketball uniforms and don cheerleading outfits because frankly, with the exception of the 4 measly points, these vets scored as many points as those wonderful and tireless La Salle cheerleaders did that game!
Big players play big in big games. Still waiting…
