Postscript to the La Salle-Ateneo Game 8/16
Posted by Proud ArcherWell Archers. If you think this week was tough, the real challenge still lies ahead of us. We are approaching our crucial games. The loss to Adamson was actually more important to us that the loss last Sunday, because UE won against Adamson. Our game against UE now becomes a must win for us to catch up with them. Look at the standings. If you notice, the field is bunched up into three (the front runners Ateneo and FEU with identical 7-1 records), the middle of the field (UE 5-4, UST 4-4, and La Salle 4-5), and the tailenders (UP and NU 2-6, and Adamson 2-7).
It’s been said that 8 wins will get us to the final 4. The first crucial tiff is UP on Saturday. With our morale at an all time low following those 3 successive losses, UP might have a chance at upending our Archers. If we lose to UP, we lose ground to the third group, just half a game ahead of them; our only hope then is to sweep the remaining games for an 8-6 record, or lose one more to any team and win the rest for a 7-7 record). Two more losses and we are virtually out of the running this year.
This is a daunting task. We still have to play UE, UST, and FEU, all legitimate final 4 contenders. How’d we get here? Things have just not fallen at the proper places and at the right times. Against Ateneo last Sunday, of our veterans, only Peejay and Maui showed up. Webb scored half of what he scored last Sunday but you couldn't really ask for another monster game from him after Ateneo scouted him in detail. Our young recruits failed to make an impact.
James Mangahas continues to be a puzzle to many. Historically, he has not played well against Ateneo because of their post defenders like Nonoy Baclao. James is a finesse player who takes floaters or jumpers but does not bang bodies inside, and against a post blocker like Baclao, this doesn't work. In contrast, James usually does well against Adamson and UST because of their porous defense and the absence of a big shot-blocking threat.
Against Ateneo, our point guard woes continued to show. Our lack of a true pg to backstop Simon was telling, because Salamat again managed to steal the ball from our players. How many times did Ateneo drive and draw? How many times was our zone broken by quick passing to an open man who more often than not made the long shot?
Our shot selection is another issue. Sam Marata's career in the UAAP so far has been nothing more than three point shooting. In fact, all his field goals are three point shots. If he learns to drive to the basket with authority, he will be next to impossible to stop. Arvie Bringas also had bad shot selection in that game, opting to just take outside shots in this game. James struggled to get a shot off at all. Bader missed almost everything he hoisted. Sam was limited to just a handful of attempts.
All these are slowly being learned by our young players. We might feel bad about the results of the last few games, but no one feels worse than our young players. Sometimes, maturity comes at a price, and perhaps this is their baptism of fire.
So Archers, we STILL have a chance at it this year. If it doesn't happen, we have a BETTER chance next year. If it still doesn't happen, we have an even BETTER chance in 2011, when we celebrate our Centennial year. By then, most of these young-uns will no longer be young-uns, but grizzled veterans who will give their opponents a hell of a time. And we’ll finally have Norbert Torres in our lineup.
Make it known to the team that your support is wholehearted, no matter what the results are going to be in the coming weeks. Make it known to them that their development is forthcoming and just like good medicine, it always tastes bitter at first. Make it known to them that our once reliable veterans of past teams did not become superstars until later in their playing careers.

August 19th, 2009 - 10:33
let us all be optimistic.its easy to criticize or lose hope, but what good will it do?cheer the team up.they know better than we do so let’s leave up to the coach and the players the rest. basta let’s do our part.prayers and cheers!
August 19th, 2009 - 10:43
@sh3rwin, Yes, Norbert was the center of the RP Youth team. He’s practicing with the Green Archers, and is part of our Team B (yes, we now have a Team B) which is participating in the ongoing Fr. Martin’s Cup. Norbert can only play for us in 2011 after fulfilling the 2-year residency requirement.
Team B scrimmages with the Green Archers, and helps simulate the sets of the other UAAP teams so that the Archers can prepare for them. BTW, Team B has a game on Sunday, 10:30 am against UP at the San Beda gym. Team B has players like Martin Reyes (from LSGH who was one of the best forwards in the NCAA), Papot Paredes (another RP Youth player), much-improved Manoj Chandumal (part of last year’s varsity), Paolo Rodriguez (one of the last players to be cut from last year’s Green Archers team), and promising Sanjeev Gangwani. Some observers have said that Team B is actually taller on the average than the Green Archers team currently competing in the UAAP. If you want to see what the future of DLSU basketball could be, Team B is a good place to start. In less than a year, these players, except Norbert, are expected to crowd the current Green Archers for slots on the team.

August 19th, 2009 - 11:17
2 years? why’s that? transfered from where? sorry, i’m just intrigued.. heard about a big guy who can really play but has to do his residency, i guess its torres..
DLSU looking really great the next couple of years!! really looking forward to Bringas – Marata – Andrada – and hopefully Gab Banal and this Torres kid.. plus LA Revilla! Hope he’s well..
2011, we’ll win it!! hahaha i hope we go for the whole UAAP championship though, not basketball only…
August 19th, 2009 - 11:26
what about the Star Player of Ateneo Highschool today, Ael Banal..younger brother of our very own Archer Gab Banal.possibe kaya na sa DLSU sya mag-aral like his bro?…i hope ma- recruit din sya ng Team natin,he’s a basketball genius, magaling din kasi sya like his brother. sana more playing time for gab banal instead od bader…let the rookies teach the veterans how to play DLSU basketball..anyway,
WIN OR LOSE, LA SALLE’S THE BETTER SCHOOL!!!Keep the faith!
August 19th, 2009 - 12:49
guys, sino sino gagraduate next year from the uaap?
August 19th, 2009 - 13:14
Only Hyram Bagatsing is the only defenite graduate from the team after this season due to age. The rest of the veterans are still eligible to play next season. If not for the suspension, this would have been also the last season for Peejay and James due to playing years.
August 19th, 2009 - 14:19
how about kish co and ferdinand? dba 5 years an sila?
August 19th, 2009 - 14:46
Let’s rally and hope it is not too late. Alot should be said about their outside shooting as terrible. Why not drive inside and foul bait? Webb is the only one I see doing it. Bader does it pero careless. Let us the not forget the ones coming from GreenHills and Zobel, like the son of Tams coach Capacio (when is he graduating?) anybody know?
August 19th, 2009 - 16:02
LS- aside from hyram, malabes is on his last year too. gradyate na si malabes
Ricky – next year graduate na si mangahas and barua. ferdi is only in his third season. kish co only in his second(?)
August 19th, 2009 - 16:13
let’s just hope for the best for our guys. who knows, the green archers might have a Cinderella story this year and make it all the way! but of course, to be realistic, many will just look forward to next year’s uaap.
no matter what happens,I am, like many others, PROUD TO BE LASALLIAN!!!
ANIMO LA SALLE!!!
August 19th, 2009 - 18:20
to clear it:
HAYRAM BAGATSING – he will graduate after this season due to age-rule of the UAAP
JAMES MANGAHAS – since we were suspended during the 2006 season, james will still have 1 more year kasi hindi counted ung 2006 season.
PEEJAY BARUA – same as with james mangahas.
August 19th, 2009 - 18:57

August 19th, 2009 - 19:17
sana ma recruit din ng Dlsu si Gwyne Capacio of DLSZ-Junior Archers, i guess he’s already in 4th year HS.he has a great basketball talent. but he’s father is currently the coach of feu, sana naman mag la salle ang son nya,haha.. Bright bright future for this young team. animo dlsu.
August 19th, 2009 - 19:25
You have no choices about how you lose, but you do have a choice about how you come back and prepare to win again. Come on Archers, esp. the veterans, let us win the remaining games. let’s dictate the tempo of the game once again. let us prove everyone(La salle haters/faker fans, critics, ugly people from katipunan esp. salamat) WRONG!!! We have faith in you!!!
ANIMO LA SALLE!!!
August 19th, 2009 - 20:38
really? Hyram will not play anymore? But he is just in his second year of playing. Is Bader Malabes graduating as well?
August 19th, 2009 - 22:18
At any rate, we still take pride of winning all our basketball championships in the UAAP from coaches who came from our ranks.
Two Pumaren coaches (Derick and Franz)and Dindo the third one sooner or later(?). All La Salle graduates.
August 20th, 2009 - 00:02
thanks for the info on the zobel grads. Regarding Capacio, sources tell me he does not want to go to FEU to play for his dad. Maybe if he is forced and Anton Montinola pursues him pero he should consider his future too by graduating from DLSU. Elorde should be good as well, we really need a good point guard.
August 20th, 2009 - 00:33
I thought residency is only for one year? How come in the case of Norbert Torres, it has to be two years? I know he can ball badly.
Papot Paredes is also a big guy. I think they’re gonna be better than RV Bringas.
August 20th, 2009 - 07:02
The Veterans really need to step up. But I really like the rookies especially Webb and Marata… Their cool. They should set example for the veterans.
August 20th, 2009 - 08:44
yeah, i think Capacio will play for the Green and White squad, 1 to 2 years from now..
August 20th, 2009 - 10:11
@jesto,
If I’m not mistaken, this is now known as the Cardona rule. If an athlete has spent more than a number of years studying abroad (I don’t remember how many), he will have to go through a 2 year residency before he can play. This is the reason why Hyram had to sit for 2 years, and was able to suit up for the Green Archers only last season. Although Hyram has more years of playing eligibility, he will exceed the the UAAP age limit by next season, so this is his second and last year as a Green Archer. UP’s sharpshooting Mike Silungan is going through his residency under the same rule. I think the 1-year residency applies to players who transfer from other Philippine colleges/universities to a UAAP member school.
August 20th, 2009 - 19:08
Good thing there’s only 8 teams in the UAAP men’s basketball league… I mean, where would we be if the NCAA and UAAP merged? Where would we rank, I wonder? Anyway, I digress…
The bottom line is to win the games we are supposed to win and that starts with taking UP down this weekend. Don’t worry about UE, UST or FEU because UP is up next, not those teams! Focus on the task at hand, take care of it, THEN worry about what’s ahead! The key to this weekend’s game is to make sure that our boys in green and white play like they can and take care of the Maroons. Let me remind everyone looking to UE and FEU that the most important game the Archers have to play is the next one… not the one in two or three weeks!
August 20th, 2009 - 21:53
JAMES G i agree with you sir, why think of the games that will not be happening soon, take care of UP first before anything else.
August 21st, 2009 - 05:08
How about the case of Papot Paredes? He’s from cagayan de oro, i believe.
Why can’t he play next year? Any answers would be great.
thanks pala sa info re Norberto Torres, I really look forward seeing the kid in the UAAP in 2 years time.
August 21st, 2009 - 15:33
@jesto, Papot was one of the last to be cut from the team, together with Martin Reyes. Both played in the preseason games, but only 16 players are allowed to be in a school’s lineup. They are now part of Team B that is currently competing in the Fr. Martin’s Cup. One of the vacancies was caused by the illness of LA Revilla. LA is being given time to recuperate, and hopefully will be able to rejoin the team next year.
August 22nd, 2009 - 19:20
Martin Reyes? As in the Martin Reyes currently playing for the Fighting Maroons? and who are the players who will not play for the team next year? if there is any.
