Archers reach new low, fall below .500 again
The De La Salle Green Archers suffered a rare debacle, succumbing to Ateneo de Manila University, 65-81, on August 16 for the Archers’ third straight loss in UAAP men’s basketball at the Araneta Coliseum.
Besides going 0-3 dating back to last Sunday, this is also the first three-game losing streak of the green and white squad in the Franz Pumaren era. Add to that the fact that the Green Archers are 0-6 against its nemesis the past two UAAP seasons.
Unlike the first encounter, the Eagles started strong, erecting a double-digit lead going into the half. By the time 20 game minutes elapsed, they were ahead, 44-27.
Rabeh Al-Hussaini asserted his might, scoring 14 of his game-high 26 points during that time. The lead became 21, 59-38, from an Al-Hussaini fastbreak finish started by an Eric Salamat steal, 5:16 in the third quarter.
The farthest it got was 23, 73-50, from a Al-Hussaini bucket. The reigning MVP shot 12/20 from the field and also had three rebounds, two assists, and three blocks.
He was helped out by partner Eric Salamat, who had 11 markers on 4/8 field goal shooting and eight assists. Nico Salva had ten.
Three DLSU cagers scored in double figures, led by Peejay Barua’s 16 points. He was followed by Joshua Webb with 13 markers, while Maui Villanueva came up with ten.

oooohhh what a shocker…I was expecting to have a close game but apparently, bader malabes and james mangahas had other plans. Let’s look at the bright side, there’s no way to go but up NEXT SEASON.Hey moderators, thank you for screening and editing the truth from the La Sallian community.
Ateneo’s dominance against us for the past 6 UAAP games boils down to Al-Hussaini’s heads-up play. He outplays and outrebounds all our big men.
True, it is a team game but his presence on the floor creates a big disparity – length and skills-wise – man for man and allows him to look for the open teammate when he’s doubled.
I believe Franz is utilizing Bader, Mangahas, Webb, Barua and Bagatsing for most part of all our games so they can build more confidence and develop shooting accuracy. The rookies will just sail through the flow of game and make a follow-through to what the veterans have started. Unfortunately, our veterans are shooting blanks. I am more concerned with Simon’s game. He should be doing more for the team like knocking down 3’s, leading the offense, breaking the opponents’ defense by attacking the lane, making more assists and putting pressure on the opponents’ pointguards. He is with the team for more than 3 years now and he must be taking shots with more accuracy and confidence. By the way, where is LA Revilla?
More importantly, I am not in any way worried with our game and performance for this season especially now that the rookies are getting more playing time. They’ll take off at the right time.
Please no more Malabes!!!!! Wake up coach Franz!
LA Revilla is not playing due to a sickness. I thought the guys played an average game today, and that certainly wasn’t enough for a very talent-laden Ateneo team.
The shooters must develop more confidence, especially Bringas Mangahas and Atkins. There were a lot of times earlier when they were wide open but just wouldn’t take the shot.
I don’t really want to bash the players, but I think Malabes is just playing terrible. PeeJay had a strong game today…hope that one continues.
Hey PRIDE, you wake up! your not coaching SO don’t question his coaching.
ALL THESE COMMENTS WON”T GO ANYWHERE!! INSTEAD OF CHEERING THEM UP, YOU’RE ALL PULLING THEM DOWN!!! you are not supporters but the other way around.. you guys can’t seem to get a grip, and you don’t UNDERSTAND ANYTHING AT ALL.
Just stop blaming the players and get a life!
let’s just hope that we sweep our remaining games to enter the final four…one game at a time guys…
when you are just observing and saying what you think is true with how one of our players performed, that is not bashing, its calling a spade a spade. malabes did poorly again but so did the others. we simply were not in fighting form and ateneo was the better team today.
however, we should still support the team win or lose but the teams should get it into their heads that they are capable of doing better and we are all eagerly awaiting when they will show it.
a little more effort would have been much appreciated, that passion and Animo that we have been known for. you cant blame the crowd for being so disappointed as we cheered our hearts out even at the face of a 17 point half time bubble, but the team wasn’t able to get its groove and the veterans just didn’t compete today.
it was a well-deserved win for Ateneo, a humbling loss for us.
@ miguel, i am willing to wait for that to happen. it will.
i just felt though that no one is manning the other end whenever another archer tries to pull of a three and misses, to recover that missed shot. sayang.
Yup, after 3 straight losess, the only way to go is up. So keep the faith, guys! Here’s a wish list of sorts –
Andrada – a medium-range shot
Atkins – to push the ball harder on offense
Bagatsing – safer passes
Barua – to keep on shooting
Bringas – more inside presence
Co – consistency
Ferdinand – not to rush his shots and better boxing out
Malabes – less errors and to choose his shots
Mangahas – to show some leadership
Marata – a slashing game
Mendoza, Villanueva – more lay-ups and put-backs
Webb – humility, humility, humility
Alumni and fans – to keep on supporting – no matter what!
We can do it! Rektikano!
please coach Franz…do not use Malabes and Atkins that much…they do more damage than help the team in all of the previous games…use them sparingly…you may want to use the rookies more (like Sam and Gab) at this point to build their confidence for the future…the rookies are playing better than the veterans…it seems that the heart of Malabes and Atkins are not in there…they are playing in this league for more than 3 years already and yet they performed that way at this point and time…they should have adjusted quickly than the rookies and yet the rookies are the ones playing better with heart and intensity…the guards should be dictating and directing the tempo and plays, respectively…but the veterans are not doing that…too bad LA Revilla is not around…we really need him right now…btw, what is his sickness?
the critics are not there to put them down but to make them realize that they still have a long way to go to improve their game and not to be complacent…they must realize that they are the veterans of the team and they must set examples for the rookies…they must put their heart and intensity in every game…hindi pwede yung palambot-lambot and as if hindi nila alam yung gagawin nila sa court…
i totally agree with miguel.
“The best criticism comes from the most loyal and diehard fans”
@SHST – i have a feeling that you are really close to Bader because you react and defend him too much when the comments are about him. If that is true, pls tell him that he must prove his detractors wrong and step up and take care of the ball well. each game, his POOR play is exposed and negative/sarcastic/bash comments about him will continue to increase.
Same with the veterans, pls step up. do not falter to the pressure. play with more spirit. lead the team as expected from a veteran coming from a championship team in 2007.
Although i am pleased with Barua today, I hope there will be a time when all of our players played their best and carry them to next games before the season is lost.
@miguel – you are definitely right … merong isang kasabihan “bato bato sa langit, ang tamaan wag magalit”
if ya know what i mean…
nevertheless….. AN1MO LA SALLE TILL THE END!
question…why do keep on saying that the team must use their veterans more often to build their confidence? isn’t it that they have been playing in this league for more than 3 years now and should have the confidence and should have known what it takes to win in this league? they should have the confidence now that they are the so called veterans…sure, we have no jv, rico or the other superstars in this team anymore; but, those veterans already shown these current crops of veterans how to show leadership or how to be a leader and how to play at this kind of level…the present veterans of this team should (by now) know how to adjust in the early start of the tournament and relatively improve as the season progresses…how come they are not showing that intensity and leadership? im not trying to put down the team but i just want to share my opinion on this. i support the green archers team…
animo la salle!!!
What’s your POV regarding this?
“They were using the same screens they used before with (Mac) Cardona, (Joseph) Yeo and (Jayvee) Casio last season. We spent a lot of time in practice preparing for their double, triple staggered screens. I think our defense created a lot of our offense,” explained Black.
To everyone who thinks we should stop criticizing our players on how they played, i have a question for you:
What else is there to do? You see with that they played like headless chickens running around fumbling the ball, passing it to the other team, like rookies when they have played for a champion team. Naturally people will complain and voice out their opinion. Wasnt this site put up for that particular purpose? Stop saying that “instead of pointing blame, just support the team”. We still support the team but since we have this avenue to speak our minds, that is what we do. If a person thinks that Mangahas sucked during yesterdays game (repeatedly losing the ball and missing gimme buckets), then he can post it here. If Malabes jumps up in the air without a clue what to do next, and just passes the ball to an Atenean (which he did) people will get frustrated. This site can help them express their disdain. So if you can stand to see complaints, critiques or exasperated diehards venting here, go to an I LOVE BADER site and comment on his preppy pics and facial hair there. This site is for informed, knowledgeable, opinionated diehard La Sallites.
By the way can someone tell Bader that shots that hit the board only do not count in the scoresheet. You have to make the ball go in the basket to score. Maybe he thinks as long as the ball hits the goal area it has a corresponding point.
It seems Coach Franz is having a hard time developing the big men. In recent years, it also seems the rookies are not being developed to their utmost potential.
OA mga iba dyan ha.
one key observation:
the players rarely make pump fakes… kaya ang daming tapal. it just goes to show how gigil the players are.
patience is a virtue ikanga.
play smart, win big!
An1mo Forever!
Rockstaridol… The case is not developing the big men… It’s how to execute their plays well… Remember this is a young team…
My take here is that the rookies and sophs should be given more playing time. Espcially Marata who is very consistent with his outside shot. The team has nothing to lose but everything to gain here. The more exposure they get, the better for the team in the long run.
If this is the team of the future then we should get more sneak previews of it.
Recruit better point guard/s so that when LA is not around there is another player who will step up. Scout in Zobel, CSB or GH. I saw a player from CSB but I don’t know what his name or surname is but I think it’s “Yonzon” He can penetrate against big guys and shoots accurately in three points. but what I don’t like is he’s shy. Another player is Villaflor from Benilde? A shooter and played for CKSC. ANIMO LA SALLE! PROVE THAT OUR ARROW IS SHARPER THAN THEIR TALONS` IF WE MAKE IT TO THE F4 DON’T PLAY OUT OF PRIDE, PLAY WITH YOUR HEART AND MIND! ANIMO LA SALLE, BENILDE, ZOBEL!
Also, try scouting in DLSU-Dasmariñas, there are a lot of good potentials there.
@blade runner: The reason why I said we need a good big man coach because our current bigs seem to not know the right moves. Their movements are very awkward.
This year’s team doesn’t simply have a leader. we thought james could be the guy but simply doesn’t have the heart and the confidence to lead the team. with the amount of minutes he’s given the past 3 years, its pretty much obvious that he simply doesn’t have what it takes!!! don’t ever count him to follow the likes of a jv, macmac, renren etc. What a waste. its time to turn over the throne to Joshua, Arvie and Maui Marata and even Gab already. These supposed vets (bader, mangahas, ferdinand, atkins,) were big disappointments for us which translated to all our losses this season. It doesn’t take one to be a coach, but its obvious what’s causing these losses already!
BENCH JAMES MANGAHAS and play Marata and or Banal!
Animo!
i agree with everyone who said that the rookies and sophs must be given more playing time. they are the ones whose confidence must be improved. the veterans have had their time and if they cant do anything more, just use them sparsely. the way i see it, the rookies just get confused when they play with the veterans who, like what somebody said earlier, run around the court like headless chickens. i remember the saying “put rotten tomatoes with fresh tomatoes and the fresh ones will rot a lot faster.” it scares me that the likes of marata, bringas, banal, andrada, manguera and the rest of the new guys will not reach their full potential only because they were exposed to the below par performance by the veterans. remember, these new boys are supposedly top caliber players as juniors, so for sure they have a lot to give to the team.
another thought crossed my mind while writing this: is it possible that there is an internal problem? maybe the archers are demoralized by something? oh well, this should not be an excuse. let’s just all look forward to better games.
Please play Gab Banal Coach Franz. You don’t know what youre missing!
will some tell us who is this scoring machine named “marco”.
mil
I think it’s Marco Batricevic. He’s a center who can shoot beyond the arc. I’ve seen him training with the Green Archers when I was a frosh. That was when La Salle was suspended in the UAAP. He didn’t play in 2007 because of knee injury. He was part of the team last year but he re-injured his knee in the game against UE. I think it’s also that injury that kept him from playing this season. I hope he can still play for next year. He’ll be a great asset for the Green Archers.
Can anyone post the team b line up? Thanks.
