Green Archers unsuccessful in title-retention bid

jvee1The Green Archers’ quest for a back-to-back championship ended after the Ateneo Blue Eagles outpayed the De La Salle Green Archers, 62-51 in Game 2 of the UAAP Season 71 Men’s Basketball Finals at the Araneta Coliseum.

The Green Archers almost caught up with the Blue Eagles in the third quarter after being buried in the half by a 15 point lead. But just when the Archers were closing in, a muzzle was placed on the team’s main offensive weapons: JV Casio and Rico Maierhofer.

Maierhofer was thrown out of the ballgame after getting two controversial technical fouls. Midway in the third quarter, Maierhofer was called for a technical foul for unsportsmanlike conduct for allegedly making the dirty finger. It was his 2nd for the game, the first being called early in the first quarter for taunting. The Puerta Galera native finished with 7 points, 3 rebounds and 1 block.

The scoring cudgel was thus left on the shoulders of JV Casio. Casio was instrumental in slashing the Ateneo lead to 3, 50-47 at the end of the third quarter, but had to sit out the remaining minute of the 3rd after incurring his 4th personal foul.

Unfortunately, just when his points are needed, JV was called for an offensive foul and left the playing court prematurely. The DLSU Team captain scored a team-high of 18 points, collared 5 rebounds and dished out 2 assists in his final game in the UAAP.

True enough, the absence of Casio and Maierhofer, combined with the defense of the Blue Eagles, spelled disaster for the defending champions. After exploding with 21 points in the third as against their rivals’ 9 points, the Green Archers were limited to a mere 4 point-production in the final quarter.

Although the Archers shot better from the 3-point territory with a 31.25 clip, their overall field goal shooting percentage of 27.94 is way below the Eagles’ 46.67% mark. The Archers were also called for more fouls 29-13.

It is the Blue Eagles’ 4th UAAP basketball championship in 32 years of existence in the UAAP. Their last title was won in 2002.

The Archers, who settled for the runner up honors, their 8th overall, was gunning for their 8th basketball title since joining the league in 1986.

    ha??? nanalo ateneo???
    hindi nga???
    marunong din pala sila manalo??

    congrats ateneo..matagal-tagal narin…

  2. Cleon says:

    Important din ang marunong matalo…

  3. rico mambo says:

did rico maierhofer really do a dirty finger?
ateneo GOT the trophy, but it was the referees that WON the championship for them.

  4. donnie_darko says:

    sige, just for kicks…

I’d dare the Blue Eagles play the Green Archers again.. But this time, with consistent calls from the refs.

    or here’s a better idea…

I’d dare Ryan Buenafe to take the ACET all over again in front of me (to make sure that he won’t pull off any tricks) and have it checked right after. Let’s see if he can pass the damn thing.

    Just for kicks!

  5. michael corleone says:

    Cleon,

  6. blazingarcher says:

    Cleon,

Do you really think that Ateneo would win season 71 without the help of the referees officiating the game???? it was evident during the whole game that they were favoring ateneo with their calls. Didn’t they see the child like act that Buenafe did during the first quarter? or were they pretending that they didn’t see him mocking Rico?

you know what it’s okay that we lost, what’s important is that we didn’t have to cheat just to win…
To all LASALLIANS ANIMO! La Salle! Keep the Faith! And THANK YOU JVEE!! Animo forever!

  7. blazingarcher says:

  17. go green archers!!!! says:

onga. infairness nman kasi sa inyong mga arrheneans, magaling tlga kyo this season..u deserve the trophy. the refs were palpak naman kasi the whole season kaya parang fair lang, whatevv. pero sana diba di na kayo nggugulo dito. obvious naman greenarchers ung site dba.

pero alagaan niyo ung trophy nio ng mabuti kasi mga ilang taon pang muli yan bago masundan. cguro mga 4-6 years.. dahil kung di man kami ang magchchampion next season, lalong di kayo.

GO ARCHERS PA RIN! and JV CASIO, we will miss you!

  18. greenarcher2008 says:

Ateneans are such “CLASS” Champions. Raiding this site with insulting comments as well as hacking archerpride.com forums. Ok talaga sa timing. Hope you guys are happy.

  19. blazingarcher says:

FYI we won’t react if we didn’t notice anything.. just like you guys! It’s okay to lose as long as the game was clean!

  20. michael corleone says:

To the ateneans (and posers alike) who seem to be lost in a La Sallian support site, just get the hell out of here. panalo na ateneo, talo na la salle. Kaya nga ‘to greenarchers.ph e!

Last year pa nga lang e.

    Grow up People…

ganun tlaga Bilog ang Bola… If indeed nadaya nga tayo…

Let the Big Guy watching over us, Deal with them…

It’s natural to be bitter, it’s human Nature…
but the faster we accept things, the faster we can move on…

Thanks Captain Casio for a great Season…

    Animo La Salle…

  22. blazingarcher says:

to the “Ateneans” or ateneo fans whose on this site, just like the rest of the archers who posted a while ago show some respect to usor don’t you know the meaning if the word RESPECT? After all this is not your site. If you want to bash us with your comments then do that on your own site.

to all the archers let’s leave the past behind ;et’s forget what happened, season 71 is over! Let’s learn form our mistakes and avoid committing the same ones next season.Let’s prove to everyone that we can bounce back!
Animo La Salle Dugong Berde FOREVER!

  23. growling archer says:

atenistas: get the hell out of here! make your own site and make sure it’s better than this.

FYI: even my friends from ateneo said that the game is not fair.

so you guys planned to have a bonfire in ateneo? sige nga mag-bonfire kayo sa ulan? or sa blue eagle gym pwede rin..hanggang ma-suffocate kayo dun.

chito narvasa really did a good job as an alumnus..not as a commissioner.

maybe rico’s index finger was as long as his dirty finger..or maybe the index finger is the new dirty finger.it was actually a surprise that the refs noticed this..and not notice buenafe staring down at james and mocking rico like a retard.

ferdinand getting a warning for trash talking?! WHAT THE EFFF! even tj manotoc thinks trash talking is normal.

i’m not surprised that when lasalle was trying to catch-up e biglang umulan ng fouls!

i bet victory isn’t as sweet as it should be. it’s hard for us to accept defeat, we’re not used to losing..not like ateneo na sanay na matalo.

jvee’s jersey should be retired. he’s one of the greatest archer of all time. you will be missed.

    ANIMO LASALLE! KEEP THE FAITH!

  24. ssouske says:

guys… easy… we’re the team that everybody loves to hate… LOL! only La Salle players would get technical fouls when they trash talk, show off, or “mock” other players…

hnnn… though i still can’t quite get over the “dirty finger” technical… even my sister, who is an Ateneo supporter, who watched the game on tv, said it was obviously not the middle finger… i dare ABS-CBN to show us a different angle of that scene… and don’t tell me there are no other angles… they have more than a dozen cameras when they cover the UAAP…

anyway… to those die hard atenean wannabes who are raiding our site/s, GTFO… go make your own site… or are you guys too poor to make your own?!? because… lets face it… you’re not real ateneans right?!?

  25. arkero says:

well…i suggest the refs review the so called “middle finger” by rico so that they would see the TRUTH…after that, it would be fair to re play the third quarter WITH rico in the DLSU lineup..i would bet my house that there would be a difference in the fourth quarter…

  26. This Game 2 is sumhow similar to the controversial DLSU-FEU round 1 game. Blaming refs and even us of manipulating the game. Well after all, all of the teams are victims of these unruly refs. Maybe this Season is not just meant for us.

Let’s face it, Ateneo is just better than us this Season. But they couldn’t take the heart of a champion in us!

We’ll come back stronger for sure. Just Keep the Animo Faith!
    We’re still champions.

  27. jrs says:

Thanks to our hardworking moderatrs who granted my request. Rico, show them what you’re made of, they don;t call you the kite for nothing. Don’t join PBL or any other league as of yet. Just concentrate on improving your post up skills. I think La Salle should send Rico and the team to the states to train to shock everyone in awe upon their return season 72.

Rico “the Iron Kite” Maierhofer… Much better di ba, Captain?

  28. AN1MO says:

Pagbigyan na natin sila. Kahit bobo ang refs, Mas magaling na man tlaga sila sa atin this season. Lets give them credit.
    Ateneo still deserves the championship.

Pero ngayon lang yan. Mababawi rin naman natin yan sigurado. Hindi naman tayo sanay matalo. We’ll be back!

ANIMO LA SALLE! Keep the faith! JV CASIO ur da man!

To the Ateneans: We do not blame you for the lost, FYI. ung officiating ung mali, HNDI KAYO.

Anyway, Congrats Eagles for sweeping this season!

Sana ung mga refs nalang miniddle finger ni maierhofer para makita tlga nila. no basis ung pagkacall nila sa foul eh. at least pag ref may solid proof.

Its ok to lose as long as it was a GOOD HONEST game. Even ateneans i know say the same thing…they were unhappy with the win kasi parang halatang halata daw.

i don’t like the game played either… la salle didn’t show the best they could beause of the worst officiating by the referees… kasalanan ng refs… hnd ang mga players ng ateneo though they played good defense that forced them and scored in the last minutes of the game, in basketball scenes kadalasan ang mga refs tlga ang nagpapa-pangit ng laro nakakabanas din, congrats ateneo for the championship la salle bawi kau improve your play, championship is still a deciding game but i hope that the refs must be more consistent with their foul or violation calls hindi kung ano2X ang tinatawag nila, pwede mgkampi s isa, pwede naman matalo basta malinis at patas ang laban di po ba

    A bitter aftertaste

    Ed Picson

Basketball fans have never had it so good. In the current break between seasons of the Philippine Basketball Association, there is no dearth of thrilling hoops action as the UAAP and the NCAA has been providing more than ample excitement.

As of this writing, Game 2 of the NCAA Finals between the San Beda Red Lions and the Jose Rizal Heavy Bombers was yet to be played but I will surely make it a point to watch, even if my alma mater, Colegio de San Juan de Letran and its knights were unhorsed in the Final Four.

But let’s not get morose here. That’s how the ball games, as they say. You win some, you lose some.

While the Red lions may be favored after their win in Game 1, I have admired the way JRU has played under the able mentorship of Ariel Vanguardia. He deserves a lot of the credit for turning things around for this team. It pains me that it was his cunning and his boys’ determination that caused Letran’s fall, but we all need to accept defeat no matter how bitter it tastes.

Which brings me to the classic UAAP championship battle between Ateneo de Manila and De La Salle University the other night.

It was as expected, another spectacle of a game between the two bitter rivals and naturally, emotions ran high. In the end, Ateneo wrapped it up in two games, sweeping the Archers with their 62-51 win in Game 2.

I thought all along that Coach Norman Black and his boys had the more formidable line-up and were able to hold up under extreme pressure, but La Salle was also talent-laden and was just as motivated. So I held off making predictions when asked by friends on what my take was on that series. It would always be fool-hardy to second guess a game that was to be decided not only by talent, skill and preparation. Too many intangibles also figure in the equation.

It turned out to be as closely-fought and contested as expected and I thought Ateneo won it fair and square. There may have been lapses in the officiating as La Salle Coach Franz Pumaren decried, but those looked more a result of human frailty and did not really dictate the end result.

Of course, Pumaren had all the right to complain and we have also observed the need to professionalize officiating in such high-profile games, even in the collegiate ranks. We have cited before the efforts made by the NCAA in hiring PBL referees thus putting a premium on officiating.

But what provided a bitter after taste to an otherwise exhilarating evening was the failure (refusal?) of La Salle to claim the 2nd place trophy during the closing ceremonies. I can understand the disappointment, dejection and all-around grief that muddles a juvenile’s decision-making in the aftermath of such a loss. But I’m sure there were more mature personalities in their organization that could have provided the voice of reason.

Basketball is a sporting event and the object of an inter-school competition is to promote well-being and give all those involved, especially the studentry, the thrill of competition and absorb the effects thereof. These are valuable lessons that are to fortify them for the greater battles ahead in the game called life. And that includes accepting a loss with dignity and honor.

Sadly, this was not the case during the awarding ceremonies and many were sorely disappointed at the display of unsportsmanlike behavior. At the very least, it sent the wrong message to the legion of young minds that were glued to the event.

I hope Coach Pumaren and La Salle officials have a good explanation for the unfortunate incident. They owe it to the public, especially to the young.

    Sour grapes, what else

    Ding Marcelo

La Salle could have gone out with its head high during the championship series.

But leave it to coach Franz Pumaren to stain a great game and an exceptional Ateneo victory — and to damage his own credibility — by claiming that bad officiating did the Green Archers in.

Well, I can’t blame the guy. He’s got to justify the loss, find a scapegoat and what better scapegoat than the referees. It would be shameful if the school shared this misconception and allow this coach to rant about officiating instead of saying that his team will come back next year and play better.

He did not blame himself, did not blame his players who panicked and played selfish and, at times, arrogant, he blamed the referees. In doing so, he missed a golden chance to rise above petty partisanship and behave like a true gentleman.

By doing so, he made his players think that they are better than their opponents although they lost fair and square; and by doing so he tried to convince the La Salle community that they’ve been cheated. What kind of coach is this? Is he talking truthfully or is he simply trying to save his job?

The referees weren’t perfect, that’s for sure. They called a very tight game, worried perhaps that it might deteriorate to the point they would lose control. It just happened that Ateneo adjusted to the referees, La Salle did not.

From a neutral standpoint, there were no glaring errors that would merit the post-game tirade of Pumaren, or any call by the referee that would have altered the outcome of the game. Instead of coming out and praising the Blue Eagles for being the better team, he now claims things would have been different had the referees been less whistle happy.

His claim of referees being biased or incompetent would not have been laughable had La Salle won a game against Ateneo this season. As it is, La Salle lost all four encounters. Also, his claim that La Salle could have won the game would have been believable if La Salle did not have to struggle to make it to the Final 4 and take the second seeding through playoffs.

Instead of being grateful for having gone this far with an overachieving team, Pumaren tried to deflect the loss from his own shortcomings to his own perception that the referees “decided the game.”

    What an unsportsmanlike gesture.

Imagine Pumaren saying the game was scripted for an Ateneo win. And then said he’s not sour-graping. What do you call that?

Pumaren, should learn how to accept defeat. These things come naturally. And those are values taught in La Salle schools – that you can’t win every day and every game. Apparently he was off playing basketball when these values were the topics in his classroom.

Besides, when he was winning all those games and all those titles, nobody blamed the referees even when many calls were flawed.

What makes La Salle-Ateneo games special is oftentimes not the quality of the games. It is, as has always been the case, the spirit that both schools bring to the hard court. It is the never-say-die attitude that both teams always bring in abundance that makes their games a treasure and always memorable. This is the reason why games between these two schools are always special and the reason why their rivalry is enduring. Everything is always left on the court.

But Pumaren had to spoil it.

Maybe La Salle should assess his coaching status. Remember that he’s the same guy who was in charge when the school was suspended for bringing in two ineligible players three years ago resulting in embarrassment and the return of a championship trophy.

Had his school been less protective, Pumaren, who claimed to be innocent and a non-participant in the scandal, should have been consigned to oblivion a long time ago.

But he’s still there, ruining his own reputation and that of La Salle’s.

Nobody told us to get our trophy, says Franz

    Abac Cordero

It wasn’t really on purpose that La Salle failed to accept the runner-up trophy last Thursday at the Big Dome following a very painful loss to Ateneo in the UAAP finals.

Coach Franz Pumaren said as the hurting Green Archers locked themselves inside their dugout after the game, nobody really told them that it was time to receive their trophy.

“Nobody told us to come out and accept the trophy,” said Pumaren yesterday. He was no longer as bitter as he was right after Ateneo clinched the title with a 62-51 win.

“Of course we were feeling bad but we were never really told to come out,” said Pumaren, who rued the officiating in the game that turned out to be the last of the season.

According to Pumaren, UAAP president Sergio Cao of host University of the Philippines decided to hand the champion’s trophy to Ateneo, amid all the celebration going on in the court, even if La Salle had not accepted theirs.

“I was told Mr. Cao told Fr. Bernie Oca (of La Salle) that they did not bother to call us because they felt that we were feeling really bad. That’s why we were not told to come out anymore,” said Pumaren

Pumaren said it has already happened in the past that the runner-up team in the UAAP was no longer asked to come out and accept the trophy.

The Green Archers, their coach added, have already accepted defeat.

“We’re okay now. In fact we’re already looking forward to next year,” said Pumaren, adding that from the Big Dome the Green Archers had a sumptuous dinner in a Chinese restaurant in San Juan.

Last Thursday’s match was the last game for JV Casio in the UAAP, and probably also for Rico Maierhofer who might turn pro since he’s about to finish his studies.

“Whatever Rico’s decision is we have to respect. We will not hold him back. He has played for La Salle for so long and he has given us a title (2007). He’s ripe for the PBA,” said Pumaren.

Pumaren raised the fact that during game the Blue Eagles were awarded 28 free throws (making 18) off 29 fouls called on the Green Archers.

“And compared to us, we were awarded only eight free throws during the entire game where Ateneo only had 13 fouls in 40 minutes of play,” he said.

“It’s quite a disparity. But that’s how the competition goes,” he said.

  38. BoomBoom says:

  39. Jayvee says:

    Sayang.

    Next year!

We did get to the finals to put ourselves in a position to really defend the crown. We were just beaten by the “through and through” number 1 team of season 71.

Balita o apat ang RP youth next year ah.. sa DLSU-M! bawi ganti! REDEMPTION!

  41. jigs says:

Just can’t get the fact that we’re cheated out of my head. talagang nilubos pa nila ung bragging rights nila para siraan tayo at murahin tayo. haha. Pero okay lang un, at least kahit talo, we really showed ateneans how real champions should act.

  42. animo_dlsu says:

guys! tama na. we lost, they won. lets just accept that fact as mature men and move on. No use in trying to have a verbal war with them. Lahat naman ng games nagkaroon ng “miracles” from the ref so i guess that something that NABRO is consistent with. Besides, sila ang champion so they have the bragging rights. FOR NOW. Anyway, we’ll beat them next year! Let’s show them we are better than them!

    Animo La Salle!

  43. jigs says:

    just to enlighten you…

…admu has been in the uaap for 30 years, yet they only managed to bag 4 titles…

…dlsu has been in the uaap for 21 years, not counting 2006, and we’ve managed to bag 7 titles in the men’s basketball division.

  44. mr_green says:

    What is NABRO? Hehehe..

Maybe the UAAP should consider getting those High Definition TVs/screens to review the games.

To the Green Archers, loyal supporters & fellow alumni, I salute you all! It’s been one hell of a season for us.

Hello to ME boys batch ‘90

  46. greenday says:

ateneo just did what is expected of them this season, however, LA SALLE did the unexpected last year! Who knows, we might do the unexpected again next year. Just prepare harder next year and recruit bigger players who can dominate the inside.

  47. Papant says:

Yes, I also heard the rumors that RP youth team players will join the Green Archers next year. I also heard one of them is actually a CCS student and is willing to play next year.

I still think that Rico wasn’t supposed to be kicked out of the game. I really praise the referees for that game job well done. I also congratulate the eggless especially to chris tiu for being such a good actor (his mentor was pacquiao) and eveng teaching his whole team to act good.

Archers will just simply congratulate the other team properly if we saw that it was a CLEAN victory…

    ANIMO LA SALLE!!!

  48. jaz says:

Im sure babawi ang la salle next year! kabwiset lang un charles bading tiu. eto basahin nyo:]

  49. painkillaz says:

boring na manood na UAAP ngayon. Next year gawin na lang free throw shooting contest or 3-point shooting contest na lang. Pwedeng pwedeng mag-officiate dun yung mga taga NABRO. Si Bader & PJ Barua dun representative natin.

  50. cevcarolv says:

QUINITO PLEASE PLEASE respect this lasalle website …GO TO YOUR OWN WEBSITE ( That is if you HAVE ????) …wag ka ng manggulo dito …ang naguusap dito mga lasallista lang kaya tinawag na GREENARCHERS.ph …. please leave and stop posting sarcastic remarks ……congrats to the blue eagles …..we ll bounce back next year !!! GO GREEN ARCHWERS ……..ANIMO LASALLE !!!!!

  51. Well we just have to accept the fact that officiating, good or bad or worst, is part of the game. Anyway, I can still say that Ateneo really deserves the crown. Ateneo is just better than us this season.

But they can never remove the Heart of a Champion the Green Archers always have. We will be back stronger next year!

And we will surely miss the name JV CASIO!
    Animo La Salle!

By now, you would have experienced gale force winds in Katipunan. Or you would have read articles in newspapers or blogs proclaiming the greatness of this season 71 edition of the Blue Eagles, Rabeh, Chris Tiu, Buenafe et al. They will also criticize our Archers as pikon and lacking class for not receiving their runner-up trophy, so perhaps we should be prepared with the facts.

    1. While UP is the host of Season 71 and they selected the Narvasa Brothers (both former Blue Eagle varsity players) and were directly responsible for the referees.

    2. Commissioner Chito Narvasa penalized La Salle and Coach Franz Pumaren during the first La Salle-Ateneo regular season game for not wearing his ID and gave two free throws to Ateneo. This inspite of Coach Pido Jarencio of UST being shown not wearing his ID during the earlier game and not being penalized.

    3. During two regular games during the season, one versus FEU and the other against UST, referees who called technical fouls against La Salle’s opponents were punished by Narvasa after the game with a termination and one with a suspension.

    4. During the the final championship game, Buenafe, Jobe and other Ateneans could be seen taunting and trash talking but were not penalized.

    5. The referees called 29 fouls on the Archers and only 13 fouls against the Blue Eagles. They awarded 28 free throws (18 which were converted) to Ateneo and only 8 free throws to the Green Archers.

    6. The phantom finger of Rico was not clearly evident and since there was no reaction from the Eagles, it must not have happened.

    7. The Green Archers were in the dugout during the awarding and no official from the UAAP called them out to receive their award.

Finally, if the Ateneans wanted to win with honor, they failed to do so. The Ateneo community should have asked the Narvasas to inhibit themselves due to their school history and obvious bias towards La Salle.

I will concede the first three La Salle-Ateneo games in Season 71 to the Blue Eagles. But we will never know the outcome of game 2 of the Championship series.because the referees panicked when La Salle reduced a 15 point deficit to three in less than five minutes.

    Animo La Salle!!!…………

  53. air says:

Close this MANILA, Philippines—About 6 years ago, a tall, gangling youth barely in his teens, stepped into the sports office of La Salle’s high school department.

He was accompanied by his mother who told the staff there that the boy was last enrolled at Philippine Christian University, but would like to transfer that school year to La Salle.

The mother said her son showed good promise as a basketball player and in all likelihood may follow the footsteps of his older brother who played varsity ball also at the De La Salle University. She said she brought his report card so he could take whatever entrance examination was necessary to get into the school.

The staff gave the boy one swift look then escorted the pair to the principal’s office.

    * * *

The mother handed the report card to the school official a bit shyly.

The principal examined the contents, then gave it back to the mother. He said the boy’s grades were too low, he cannot even qualify to take the entrance exams.

Mother and son left the school totally downhearted. The boy was unheard of for a long time.

Some years later, however, the boy would resurface in the UAAP wearing a blue uniform. By this time he had metamorphosed into an adult with rippling muscles and hairy legs. He had also grown in height and weight.

But a La Salle staff member recognized him as the boy who wanted to play for the school many years ago.

He now wonders if his school’s destiny would have been reversed, for this season at least, if the once gangling youth was accepted into the academe.

Highly instrumental in leading his team to the UAAP title this season, the boy, Rabeh Al-Hussaini, was voted most valuable player of the league.
