Postscript to the ADU Pre-game Predictions

I was able to catch the second half of the game. From the 1st quarter stats, the Archers dug themselves into a deep hole with a 20-9 deficit, something they could not climb out of. They had the attempts on basket. They just couldn’t make the shots. This is not to take away anything from Adamson. Part of the reason for the low percentage shooting was their interior defense. It was they who had the team defensive mindset.

I was with a couple of La Sallites whom I didn’t know, who commented about my article that we could blow them away in this game. Did I want to crawl under a rock for my prediction? Well of course not. Why? Part of the article read “They are beginning to know who will shoot, where and when, and how. It’s just a matter of execution of our offensive patterns. Usually, you will know the offensive flow of the game on game time itself. This is the reason why I commented that we can blow Adamson out of the court this time.” Obviously we did not execute well. Look at the score. The defense was there as they scored only 61 points. It was the offensive execution that was wanting. However also, the team started to wake up defensively a little too late.

I did not say that Adamson was a patsy this second round. Remember. This is a team which is much better than their record shows. If I remember correctly, four out of those 6 lost games were lost by four points or less, including a double overtime loss to us, and an overtime loss to UE. Adamson is not a pushover team.

If La Salle wants to win games, it must treat EVERY game with utmost dedication and respect. No team in the UAAP will EVER give away a game. You have to EARN it. Not to take anything away from Adamson, who played a great defensive game and won it fair and square, we actually lost this one because of our own doing. 22% from 2 point range. Sadly, this is a harsh lesson and a bitter pill we have to swallow. I have also stated previously that there are no weak or strong teams in the UAAP and that everone can beat everybody else on any given day. There you go.

Yes we are running out of games to recover from. Yes, it’s close to critical time. But I still believe that we can win this thing. Oh here I go again. Oh there he goes again!!!! The community might want me to shut up at this time. Why? Because of a loss??? I NEVER say quit and neither should the alumni, the studentry, and specially the team.

Again, this is an investment team, and this team has to experience this pain to gain CHARACTER for the upcoming grind, not only this year, but in the year’s to come.

I was correct with James Mangahas. He really is a match-up problem for Adamson. Unfortunately, nobody else followed his lead. One positive came out of this though. Joel Tolentino showed up. Even if he had that loose ball error when he fell down, that is what he has to do. I liked the way he drove to the basket during the dying second of the game. Joel has to show up and support Simon every single game, for us to have a chance at this.

For now, let the team bow their heads. Let them feel the pain and anguish of losing. They deserve this. They took Adamson for granted and this is the price of that. Hold on though. Tomorrow is another day. Let them recover from this with sheer determination of making up for this loss. This is the essence of the struggle. You pick yourself up, dust yourself off, and start all over again (as the song goes).

I feel bad, just like you. I am a La Sallite with the chosen monicker Proud Archer. I will remain so because in my life, picking myself up, dusting myself of, and starting all over again, has been my story. As Tita Cory lived her life, the heirarchy of her existence and priorities was always, God, Country, and family. To me, being a Proud Archer is a close fourth.

ANIMO!!!!!!!

To the Green Archers, FORGET THE PAST 2 GAMES, you got 6 more games to prove your worth. The La Sallian community is still hurting from the Ateneo loss but now is the time to sort those mistakes. I just hope these 2 heartbreakers would teach us a lesson.

    Get those eagles on sunday!!!!

“No team in the UAAP will EVER give away a game. You have to EARN it.” – Proud Archer

I agree with you Proud Archer..
no team can win a UAAP without playing the game with the whole 40 minutes (or more)..

i may not be a La Sallite literally, but i really put my faith on the La Salle squad for so many years.. and always been there in times of Wins and Losses..

we may be down.. but we are still not out..

    AN1MO LA SALLE!

the team should have seen that that the adamson falcons are no pushover (based on the previous DLSU vs AdU first game, which the archers won by only a point). the falcons are very disciplined team since they have strict coach. they should have tighened the defense and raised their energy a little bit more (there is this old saying nga na “kung hindi tayo makaka-score, hindi din dapat makaka-score ang kalaban”). maybe our players were exhausted from their very emotional game against the blue eagles or they are looking ahead with their game on sunday.

anyway, the war is not over yet. the green archers can still make up for the loss by beating the team from katipunan. just give your best on sunday…increase your energy, be aggressive, keep your cool, and dont lose focus (especially on defense) and composure.

lets support the green archers team…animo la salle!!! :)

failure teaches us how to become successful. if we do not learn from this one, then its our own doing. we can not take can anyone or any team for granted. i think the team became over confident after the great game with ateneo and now mustl lick the wounds of defeat. learn we must from this.

  5. Humility is a virtue. Let’s not get ahead of ourselves with predictions that the boys may not be able to accomplish at this time. Let them gain a little more experience and confidence in themselves first.

Hopefully the loss to Adamson makes the team focus because the game vs. Ateneo this weekend has just become even more important! How much more important you ask? Try three straight losses in the span on one week important… Try starting the week at 4-3 and ending the same week at 4-6… Try being in the playoffs to being completely out! The game against Ateneo has gone from a rivalry to one of survival for our boys in green and white. This game, is without question in my mind, THE most important game this team has to play this season!

The only consistent about the green archers is their inconsistency. While it is true that the present crop of rookies are talented, they need time to build their character and regain their winning ways. Our veterans are not exactly in the mold of a casio, tang, villanueva or a cabatu or mierhofer who have talent but also high basketball IQ. With the way the things are going, it seems that we will going to miss the final four by a heartbeat. It can be ratiocinated from the fact that the third to sixth spot is crowded with teams whose rosters are either loaded with veterans who are playing their hearts out every game or rookies playing like a veteran giving the best of what they’ve got. Take the case of UST. Ababou and Mirza are playing their game as if it will be their last. They were ably supported by a rookie named Teng who brought with him his winning ways back in Xavier, veteran Camus and Bautista, role players like Maliksi and Afuang. While it can be gainsaid that this UST team lacks the ceiling of a Tamaraw or an Eagle, and probably A-1 coaching similar to that of an Eagle or Archer, they are playing with heart which I think will strengthen their character.
Another example is the Red Warriors. Many basketball pundits believe that this season will be the end of UE’s winning ways after dindo Pumaren left the team. But lo and behold! Despite the inconsistency of their most atheletic player in the name of Paul Lee, other warriors like Val Acuña, Pari Llagas, Elmer Espiritu, Raffy Reyes and Rudy Lingganay are playing “timing” basketball. That is a mark of a veteran: TIMING. Some basketball observers said that most of the wins of UE are tsamba, nevertheless, their veterans are shooting the unexpected baskets to force overtime or to nail the final touches and seal a win.
Looking the performance of teams like Ateneo, FEU, UST and UE, it seems that they are playing smooth and sound basketball. The way they run their half-court plays, running a fastbreak and rebounding is awesome. Swabe in basketball lingo. The players can easily adopt with their respective system.
Breathing on our neck is NU and Adamson. Both teams have good coaches. If the Bulldogs can ably execute their high low plays and their bunch of rookies play inside-outside, they are a serious threat on the Warriors and Tigers. With regard to the Falcons, it seems that the players are accepting their roles in the team. Result: they clawed the Archers.
Our Green Archers are not playing our patented La Salle Basketball. It can be attributed to the fact our present personnel does not have an effective tool in running our system. Mangahas, Barua and Malabes are veterans but they are simply role players period. We should remember that a future superstar can raise his level of play a couple of notches higher. Aldeguer, Allado, Casio, Cabatu, Mierhofer and Tang did that. During my La Salle days, Monasterio, Abanilla and Lago did that too. We have to admit and probably stipulate that our present veterans are mere role players.
On the other hand, our sophomores and juniors are technically doing well. Maui and Jovet, while struggling still has good basketball IQ. Webb and Atkins should improve their timing. The rest of the Archers, especially the rookies, should treat the present season as a learning experience. Marata, Tolentino, Bringas, Andrada, Banal and Manguera are all promising greenhorns. They will come of age and I hope it will come very soon. Next season, I would like to see a real Green Archers playing with genuine La Salle Basketball: unforgiving in defense, smooth in offense, full of heart, experience, composure, candor and pride wearing our green and white. See you next season.

  8. coachoftheyear says:

I agree with you Proud Archer..As a matter of fact, based from the statistics of this season, we loose the game if we shoot less than 25% in the field. Just like our first two games against UE and FEU…. If I am not mistaken we shot 22% and 24% respectively. We have the defense but we lack the offense… Let us just keep our heads high and support the team against our arch rivals this Sunday.

  9. blade runner says:

Guys, i hope they can pull off a 2004 starting this Sunday… Yes we lost the first game of the second round that year and notched six straight after that… And you knew what happened next…

  10. r3x says:

humility it is. i dint see the game but maybe we were full of ourselves. Its a very painful loss for an avid supporter. Just when you are so into watching games and then there is this game.. I hope our archers so learn from this..XD

  11. addie says:

proudarcher, can you do the de la salle community a favor and remove your article “Pre-game Predictions: La Salle vs. Adamson Round 2″ from this site. Your article was totally OFF and full of arrogance shaming the school and its students.

Your article showed that you and our team had the same mindset before the game…you underestimated our opponent and look what happened. Only 1 out of your 14 predictions came true (mangahas), just about the same as malabes field goals.

I hope this loss, taught us all about HUMILITY. To be humble when we win, to accept the MISTAKES when we lose and try to correct them.

Guys, we still have 6 games to go. UE also lost yesterday. We can still make it to the final 4. Just play like a team and give everything you have every game. No matter what happens at the end of the season, we will still be PROUD ARCHERS forever!

  12. mario av matias says:

After all is said and done with, at the end of the day, a win is a win and a loss is a loss…our team will recover and must win to survive this season, making it to the final-four should not be “that” difficult even with the rookies…i am not expecting us to be champions, but in the final-four at least.
I agree with Proud Archer and Ronn and Blade Runner…remember, the ball is round and there will be off-days too for the other teams…when you have a low-percentage offense, credit too the defensive stance of the opposing team,,,true, if we cannot shoot, then we should not allow the other team to also shoot….anyways, see you all in the games….its the only place I like to shout, dance and still not get caught for whatever….

  13. dieharddlsu says:

i do not think that our team played arrogantly and underestimated adamson. it’s just that adamson is that good(and better than what their win-loss record shows). it is a team that can play against the big boys, even against the top two favorites, ateneo and feu

  14. James G says:

I like the concept of this site because it allows everyone to express their opinion about the team they love and care for, regardless of who’s wearing the uniforms. Some opinions will be harsh, others fond and others perhaps confident but all opinions expressed all point in the direction of support for our team in good weather and bad. As long as the mods allow the contributions, I say let them stand and remove nothing. Everyone has an opinion and I say, let them express themselves otherwise what’s the point of a site like this?

  15. Rockstaridol says:

I think we’re expecting too much na from the Archers. Or maybe the words are “too hopeful.” With the current roster, I think they already “peaked.” We already saw how far they could go. Ganyan talaga eh. I don’t think the rookies and sophs could carry the team this year. Sana next year.

And please naman, know the difference between “lose” and “loose.” *rolls eyes*

  16. green matsin says:

even though our team lost two straight games (again), i will not lose FAITH! a lot have been said about learning from losses, blahblahblah, but you know what, a team’s true character will show when crucial games present themselves. only then will we know if the team truly deserves to be in the final four or even champions.

I believe…. that our team still has the HEART to win…

Keep the Faith…. AN1MO LA SALLE!!!!

  17. addie says:

    @dieharddlsu

“adamson is that good”….are you out of your mind??? Are we referring to the same team? The cellardwellars after the first round with a 1-6 record!!!!

Boy, if the archers share your opinion that “adamson is that good”, i’m afraid we have set our standards too low this season. Maybe you have infected the mentality of our veteran’s and that is why the reason why they are playing so poorly.

C’mon guys. we should not give up that easily. Our players are weak individually, but if we play as a team we can beat anybody. Animo!!!

  18. O_o says:

    @ Addie

…. O_o ARE YOU SERIOUS? Everyone talks about AdU like they’re a HS Team from Indonesia that we’re supposed to beat by 12534 points when in fact they have played alot of “heart braeking games” where they lost the game in the last few possesions. In reality had the ball bounced “the other way” they’d have a very similar record to us. AdU was bound to get a win soon and it just so happened that “soon” happened when they were playing vs the best looking team in the UAAP the green archers.

The 1-6 record of Adamson does not reflect how good this team is, and alot of people don’t give them their due. Please watch teams other than Lasalle and maybe you’ll actually understand what people are saying.

I can’t believe you failed so much to respect our opponents. No wonder everyone thinks bobo mga taga lasalle.

  19. addie says:

    @ O_o

This is a DLSU forum, but i guess visitors from Adamson are welcome to butt in sometimes.

Congrats to your team! Your players outplayed ours… FYI, our players are not playing 100%. They are all currently sick…someone has infected their mentality.

  20. O_o says:

im not from AdU, Im from DLSU i just find it completely annoying that people from LASALLE can’t respect the basketball programs of other schools. Do you honestly think that Ateneo and UE are the only teams that have a good basketball program? Honestly supporting a team is different from being oblivious to how good another team is.

  21. mario av matias says:

Hi guys, reading all the comments in this forum, I can’t but notice the sarcasm, the hurt, the pride of the individuals writing in this forum. But please remember, this is college basketball and there will be winners and losers in every game played. So let us keep our cool, show our decency and culture by behaving as christian gentlemen…La Sallites are christian gentlemen wherever you find them, on-court, off-court and in the way they conduct themselves, privately and in publice….you will be accepted as a La Sallite if you are such, otherwise, you are just simply a student of La Salle…lucky to be enrolled in the school…as the saying goes, one maybe educated but un-cultured….we are both educated and cultured people, so lets behave as such…I am a La Sallite, class of ‘68…and I expect nothing less from each-one-of-you if you are truly a La Sallian (at heart ha) not just because you have a school I.D or wears green…Animo, live Jesus in our hearts!

Look at the bright side, we just made history as this team was the first franz pumaren coached archers team to lose three in a row! WHOOOO kudos to you green archers you will definitely be remembered for that….Hey moderators, thank you for screening and editing the truth from the La Sallian community.

after tonite’s game with Ateneo, I hope we can still pick-up the pieces and bounce back, in contention, to be able to reach the final four…and start from there…

PROUD ARCHER, if you happen to read this, will you please give us your piece of where we are at and where we are headed in the next few weeks…your fearless forecast and all our desire to be there…btw, if I may ask, where can I get the stats to find out just how many games we have won or lost against Ateneo, from the time we joined the UAAP?
Thank you and more power to all of us….LJiohf!
