The De La Salle Green Archers went toe to toe for 40 minutes against the defending champions until fatigue set in overtime as Ateneo de Manila won, 76-72, on August 9 to end the first round of UAAP men's basketball eliminations at the Araneta Coliseum.

After Arvie Bringas and Hyram Bagatsing scored consecutive three-pointers in the final 20 seconds of regulation to send the game into extra time, the Archers tried to salvage the game in which they led by as many as ten early in the third period. Alas, their attempts from beyond the arc went wild and wooly as Nico Salva sealed the outcome with a bucket, :14.7 to go, for the final tally.

Nevertheless, the saving grace of this game is that the rookie laden squad held their ground against the more mature Blue Eagles.

Joshua Webb went crazy to end up with 17 points in the first half, finishing with 26. This is the highest output of any Archer so far this season.

Bringas also had ten.

Rabeh Al-Hussaini limped out with 13 points with Eric Salamat producing the same along with five assists and three steals.

Jovet Mendoza made himself known, scoring six straight points to end the first quarter. In the second, it was the heady plays of Yutien Andrada at the defensive end that went noticed, blocking Al-Hussaini twice and Salamat once.

But all that time, it was Webb who was carrying the scoring load for the green and white, relentlessly attacking the Ateneo interior defense, scoring nine of the 14 Archer points in the second canto.

Bringas started the second half with a turn around basket for the game's first double figure lead, 42-32. The last time it reached ten was from two Webb charities, 46-36, 7:02 remaining.

As the green and white went 'three-ger' happy, the Blue Eagles gradually crept themselves back into the game, capped by a Ryan Buenafe buzzer beater to end the third, with the Archers cautiously ahead, 50-46.

A 14-3 run by ADMU shifted the momentum to the blue side as it tasted the lead for the first time since the first quarter, 60-57, courtesy of a two-man play between Salva and Salamat leading to a Salamat trey, 3:36 in the clock.

A Salva followup and a Salamat split from the freethrow line for a four-point Ateneo lead, 65-61, with :23.5 to go set the tone for the comeback. Coming from a timeout, Bringas hoisted a cold-hearted three from Bagatsing's inbounds pass from a straddle, exactly three ticks elapsing.

After Buenafe made his freebies from a Mendoza duty foul, Bagatsing faked Austria off his socks for a leaning three-pointer from near the top of the key, :0.8. Bringas almost won it but his attempt hit rim and bounced out as time expired.

The second round begins on Thursday for the Archers as they battle Adamson University at 2pm. As a sidenote, the whole team had yellow shoe laces to pay tribute to the late President Corazon Aquino.

  1. what a game! but in fairness to the green and white, it showed that they can handle a championship team, i agree that they got to overzealous with 3pointers. What a heroic attempt by our green and white ! My question is, who now can beat the hail mary squad from katipunan?

  2. It’s a learning experience for the green archers. The first half of the game saw the intensity of the team in defense: blocking shots, hauling rebounds, and covering the passing lane of the blue eagles. In the second half, the archers fell in love with their long shots. Worst, they forgot how to defend ateneo’s big men considering that the reigning mvp is not on the court. They were rattled by the experience plays of ateneo. The loss should serve as a lesson to them especially for barua, mangahas and malabes who are supposed to lead the team. it seems that the younger archers are the ones giving all their energy, heart and pride for the school.

  3. i think we need start asking Malabes/Barua not to shoot anymore. Their misses always makes us on the losing end. *just not happy with the way they play.

But still an Archer fan. Keep the Faith! Animo….

  4. @Junn R: UP.

  5. Our team lost, but I still think it was a great game. we played great for 40 minutes, but for the extra 5, bokya. The team proved its critics wrong. Akala ng iba tatambakan tayo ng 10+ points, pero muntikan pa tayong manalo! It’s a learning process, and I am sure the team learned a lot from the game. Bringas and Webb were great, and the last two 3-point shots by Bringas and Bagatsing in the 4th quarter were unexpected. Congratulations to the team for a job well done!

    KEEP THE FAITH!!!
    ANIMO LA SALLE!!!

  6. Check out my previous post? Everything came true didn’t it? No, I am not a prophet. I study the game from a strategist’s point of view. It is jus unfortunate that we lost the game. But we didn’t lose tonight. I commented that this was going to be Yutien’s break-out game twice previously. Why was this so. Ateneo posts Rabeh up on the left side of the court almost exclusively. Tayshawn’s job was to stay with his footwork, and try to block his shot upstairs. THAT is his job. He jumps higher than Rabeh and has longer reach. THAT was the reason for the prediction.
Jovet Mendoza is now coming into his own. Did you like his game? I did.
Why do I sound like we won the game? Why not? The much maligned team is now a proud team. Nobody will now take us for granted. Believe it or not, we are now a championship caliber team this early in the tournament.
Why did we lose tonight? Little bits of things here and there. For one, our point guard rotation was shallow in this game. Only Simon and Hyram did an effective job. But match-up wise, when Salamat was on the court, Hyram’s dribble is a little telegraphed, and Salamat is a very skillful defensive guard.
Spider Webb played a fantastic game. But sadly, he lost his cool which resulted into a two free throw plus ball possession of Ateneo. That was crucial. Anotehr crucial play was when Rabeh sprained his ankle on the other side of the court, instead of rotating the ball to the open man, Bader Malabes decided on an open jumper, which he missed.
Don’t blame Malabes. It was decision making time, and he wasn’t a point guard. He has a scorers mentality. That is his job.
Sadly also, Rabeh showed that he was a head case. His first free throws made, he taunted the La Salle crowd, who responded with zeal in rebuffing him. Tayshawn’s two blocks on him completely took him out of the game. He was a non-factor after those two blocks.
Sumalinog also thought he was a superstar after he hit his early three point shot and trashed talked Webb right in his face. Result: Webb, 26 points, Sumalinog, 3 points and three fouls.
How about Arvie huh? He will be our heart and soul for years to come. What heart, what skill, what attitude!!!!
Despite the loss result, if you are not proud to be an Archer, my friends, then you really are not Archers.
The result didn’t favor us today. But the tournament is just going into the second round, and what position are we in now? Joint second with UE and UST. And these teams that beat us in the first round. They better be ready for payback time. We are now playing De La Salle Green Archers basketball.
    ANIMO!!!!!!!!

  7. No one should hold their head down, no one should feel ashamed at this loss. We lost and it’s painful to lose especially in OT but this team showed alot of guts and balls during the 4th quarter. On a side note, has anyone noticed that Hyram has been hitting alot of clutch 3s for us lately? Does anyone have the statistics on that?

@ banemalr – Barua is slumping lately (it happens to shooters every once in a while) maybe Malabes should shoot less he’s far more effective when he’s creating shots for other teammates. Barua on the other hand is actually tasked to shoot. What I dont see him doing now is driving to the ring then doing that semi hook/teardrop thing he used to do last year. He used to do that when he couldn’t hit threes.

@ Junn R – I wont be surprised if we win vs Ateneo next round. But as far as who can beat them other than us? FEU has the manpower to do it, especially now that RR Garcia has more games under his belt he should be able to perform better vs Ateneo. … Maybe we could rent Woody Co and Martin Reyes when we go up against Atenep :) ) just for kicks maybe sila yung lucky charm =)) (I’m not serious)

We’re over achieving this year, yes we are. It’s because our coaching staff is really squeezing every once of talent they can from the players and thats great. Just wait for next season, we should be alot better then. -peace

  8. So this is how UST felt after the game slipped away from them in a double overtime loss last week!
This was a great game today for DLSU against the league-leading defending champions. A different Green Archer steps up each game. Shows you the talent and potential packed in this team. Waiting for all gunners to be firing consistently in the second round.
    ANIMO La Salle!

  9. IT WAS A VERY GOOD GAME THOUGH! I don’t feel any regrets, because in the first place, we are the underdogs here. We even proved our critics and La Salle haters wrong! Our rookie-laden team managed to handle Ateneo, and now it seems that our team can be very threatening in the second round. And, I dunno if other Lasallians noticed this, but for the rest of the game, except for the remaining minutes, it was the La Salle crowd that was celebrating!

    ANIMO LA SALLE!

  10. Great game – may PUSO!

Kudos to JPAbcede, good write-up and analysis.

    Keep the Faith! Animo!

  11. La Salle was leading by 12 in the mid second quarter and was up the whole 3rd. This should’ve been a won game for La Salle if they didn’t give up the 4th quarter. Even though La Salle lost this game, in my opinion, it can go either way and should not be a dissheartening loss for our school. We can bounce back the next game!

I STILL BELIEVE. ANIMO LA SALLE!

  12. Yup. Great game, good write-up and a bright future ahead!
    Animo La Salle!

  13. Great game for the archers. Yes we lost the game but a lot has been gained. Players like Andrade and Mendoza are starting to step up and show their real potentials. The defense is improving every game. Shooting percentage has gone up. The biggest problem for the team as i see it would be the inconsistent play of BADER MALABES! Yeah he could score and play D, but during crucial moments he has been killing us! I think he was given enough chance to prove his worth but he just keeps on blowing it. Anyway, overall, I see a very bright future for the archers. I’m keeping the faith. Animo La Salle!

  14. feel ko panalo pa rin tayo. there’s nothing to be ashamed of. Can’t wait for the 2nd round.

Keep the Faith! Animo La Salle!

  15. I think the reason why we threw a lot of threes is because of the great defense of Baclao. Guys like Salva and Austria also stood out for them. Nevertheless, a great game by the guys. The Webb/Atkins incident was unfortunate, and I tip my hat off to Hyram. Great shot at the end of regulation.

  16. well.. IKA NGA NILA..
“ANG BIDA AY TALO SA UNA”
    we could do more..
and keep the faith in round 2..
    ^^

  17. nice game guys! The archers did a great job! i hope by the next games, the players should learn to humble themselves against any team ’cause it really affected the momentum during the game.. some players just lost their composure. Stay focus guys! Don’t get intimidated… but nevertheless, i still feel like we’ve won! great job guys! Marata should be given more playing time (i feel like he’s the next ren ren ritualo hehe).

  18. I’m happy the team competed but I’m wondering why we stopped doing what was working in the first half like Joshua driving strong to the hole, playing excellent defense and instead putting up ill-advised 3s. Where was Mangahas?? He hardly made an impact but I’m proud that the younger Archers like Joshua, Yutien and Arvie played their hearts out for the team.

  19. Good job guys! You played to win while they played not to lose. It’s only another game well played but you showed us tonight a very bright future for this green and white squad. It’s their time tonight but it will be our turn next time! Look at the Team Standing…we are GOOD!!! No way to go but up! AIM YOUR ARROWS HIGHER OUR MIGHTY ARCHERS!!!

  20. The game yesterday between DLSU vs. ADMU was great even though we did not win. Don’t worry! We still have other games. However, I hope the Green Archers have learned their lessons. For the veterans, please play consistently since you are more experienced than the rookies. For the rookies, keep up the good work.

KEEP THE FAITH! ANIMO LA SALLE!

  21. Although we lost, the Archers proved that La Salle basketball is always competent despite having a rookie laden squad. I love the game of Joshua Webb. He was never afraid of Al-Hussaini and Baclao. He just kept on driving down the lane and scored a lot of points. The blocks of Yutien Andrada on Al-Hussaini and Salamat were great as well. He just needs more bulk to defend better against other big men. Hyram Bagatsing’s late trey was amazing. His leadership is becoming more evident every single game. Lastly, Arvie Bringas. This rookie showed a lot of heart. He fought hard until the end. He will surely be the heart and soul of the Green Archers in the future. King Archer? Too early to tell. Let’s hope he can Bringas back on top of the UAAP. By the way, the veterans are playing very sloppy this season. Peejay Barua is very cold this season. I hope he can perform better in the 2nd round. Bader Malabes… He’s more of a casualty than a contributor inside the court. I hope Coach Franz will limit his minutes especially during crunch time.

The future is BRIGHT for the Green and White.
    NEVER Lose Faith!
    ANIMO La Salle!

  22. When will Barua, Malabes and Mangahas graduate? Is this their last year? I hope so. But James is still good. Malabes – no comment.

  23. hahaha you guys are so BLIND. still classic comments from what do you call youselves?? la sallian? proud to be one? and this is how your reacting to the game? Still, singling out players AS USUAL. FOR YOUR INFORMATION, Bader was able to contribute even though he missed shots, Mangahas and Barua on the other hand did but not as much as Bader. Coach Franz puts him there for a reason so dont question his coaching, unless you think you’re better than him, well i dont think so why dont you guys just keep it to yourselves.
you guys dont actually know what it feels like for them, you dont understand EVEN A BIT.
instead of complaining and feeling that you think you know everything, why dont u just support the team because thats what they need. they dont need your comments.

  24. SHST has a point, event though bader was not great, he contributed. and the 3′s he attempted on the OT, he was not the only one. si bringas at barua din. we lost, no excuses, and we lose as a team. wala na sanag sisihan. but it was a fantastic game, don’t you think?!

  25. i’m still very proud of our team. a rookie-laden team was able to keep up with the defending champions, and at some point nalamangan pa. akala ko tatambakan ng ateneo ang lasalle just like the past games against ue and feu. we were also able to push ateneo to overtime. this would be a great experience for the rookies.

  26. may schedule na ng second round? tnx.

  27. In my opinion the crucial factor was fouls. Ateneo has a lot of free throw shooters that’s why we lost. But last night’s game was one for the records a true instant classic.

Kayang kaya natin ATENEO isipin mo we’re a younger team and yet our sophomores and rookies have the focus to shoot clutch 3pointers. We’ll make it in the final four, we have a chance to go to the finals, we are a championship caliber team.

    ANIMO LA SALLE!

  28. One more thing… ATENEO did not defeat us… They merely survived…

  29. I agree with SHST when he said that we should just support the team. although most of your analysis may be correct regarding inconsistent performance of certain players etc. thats what sports is all about! being a former varsity player for our beloved school, i know that the coaching staff & specially the players know that errors were made & non-athletes could never ever fathom the feeling of letting the entire school down. but there is always a next time & i’m sure we well all rise to the occassion. this is what la salle is all about. let us not forget also when these same players played well for us and that whenever we step into any athletic venue, the green & white always instills fear and admiration to the opposing team. to the critics i still say thank u becoz we all know how u love the school. but lets not forget how our athletes feel. i’ve spoken to them and they look up to us. anything we say good or bad is magnified a thousand fold. animo la salle guys!

  30. in the game vs. ust, bader played great when he elected to pass than to shoot. maybe coach franz should encourage him to do more of that. i agree with SSHT that coach franz puts him in the game for a reason.

by the way, great cory t-shirt, better than the ateneo yellow shirt. where can i buy one?

  31. Could someone ask coach Franz to bench Mangahas?

I dont remember him having a field goal. I know he’s one of the senior players but comeon! if you’re cold, you’re cold!

Let bringas and webb do the shooting. BRINGAS back to our ANIMO glory!

  32. Remember how cold Barua was in the uste game?then all of a sudden when coach Franz put him in,he hit 2 treys. One, sending the game in 2OT, the other starting it.

  33. The better defense usually wins. La Salle played well but they need to play better defense and don’t fall in love with the 3 point shot.

  34. It was a great game. even if we lost, i did not feel disapointed. the young turks carried the fight for us. webb, bagatsing, mendoza, bringas and andrada were so focused. what got me off my seat were those two blocks by andrada on rabeh. now rabeh knows what awaits him in future La Salle vs ateneo games. conspicuously absent were the veterans barua, mangahas and malabes. from a baller like me, i think malabes’ strength is in penetrating the defnse and go for the daredevil lay-up or make drop passes. He is not a good shooter but he is an excellent penetrator. He should penetrate more than take outside shots. he’s got good dribbling skills too that helps him penetrate. as for mangahas, his game just dips when we face ateneo. they have his number. the reason being is that mangahas thinks too long whenever he has the ball. this is ok when we are against the other teams. but against a team that plays superior defense, he has to make faster decisions. As for barua, all he needs is to be more consistent with his threes and to drive to the basket when his threes are not going. even ferdinand was absent. in my opinion, only one veteran played well, atkins (except for that unsportsmanlike foul he commited). the good thing about the game is that as the overwhelming underdogs, we almost beat them. and somewhere in the near future, we will beat them. i agree with danimo, they did not beat us, they merely survived us. and we did that with our young turks

  35. when was the last time mangahas had a good DLSU-ADMU game?please enlighten me guys

  36. @lee: The UST game dude. He carried the scoring in the 1st half. He was actually part of the candidate for champ of the game with bringas.
