  • Still looking for the King Archer? We might as well give the entire team a crown as they certainly played like royalty today. Almost everyone, especially the veterans showed up and brought their “A” (Archer) Game in this come-from-behind double overtime conquest over the UST Tigers.
  • Bader Malabes showed a new facet of his game today. He rarely attempted a shot and he settled more on drive-and-dish plays. He led the team with Hyram Bagatsing in assists with 7.
  • And speaking of Hyram, he is certainly proving himself lately as to why he was chosen as the team’s skipper. Always cool under pressure and willing to take the big shots when needed.
  • And speaking of big shots, Peejay Barua was like Derek Fisher today- hitting a three to send the game to 2nd OT and again nailing one that somehow changed the complexion of the game.
  • This was definitely the breakout game for rookie Arvie Bringas. What a monster game for this kid, top scoring with 21 points and grabbing 8 rebounds. He was unstoppable once given the ball down low. We hope that he would further develop in to that inside threat the team so badly needs.
  • I only mentioned several players here but the win today was a total team effort. The Tigers were just as good earlier but in the end, the Archers’ vast experience in pressure game situations was just too much for them to handle.
  • I'm impressed with UST rookie Jeric Teng. Just like his dad Alvin "Robocop" Teng, he showed toughness and nerves of steel. A prized catch indeed for the Tigers.
  • The Archers may have already found their true identity this season. The players are starting to know their respective roles and be accustomed with the system of Coach Franz. We could probably say that the team has already moved on from the departure of JV and Rico and are ready to face greater challenges ahead this season. And that ultimate challenge is next Sunday against the defending champs.

Side Notes

  • When asked about his impression on the team so far, former Archer JV Casio is confident that they still have what it takes to be a contender. “Kaya naman eh”, he said.
  • Congratulations to Rico Maierhofer as well as PJ Walsham and Mark Benitez for being chosen in today’s PBA Draft. Michael Burstcher, who had a brief stint with Team B was also among the aspirants selected.

  4. Now that’s La Salle basketball! Even if let’s say they fell short in the end and UST won, it would have still been a major victory for the team, and I’m sure many would still be proud of the team and relieved that the Animo’s alive and well. Great job! May mas sasarap pa ba sa pagiging Lasalista? Animo La Salle!

  6. It’s funny, but it’s only now that most supporters are beginning to realize that there is indeed a plan by the coaches on how this season will be conducted. The plan did not necessarily call for victories early in the season. It did however plan for the team to learn from game 1, and to start picking up towards the end of the first round.

Far too many were willing to voice their criticism of the team and the players after the first two losses. We have to remember that the coaches know what they’re doing, much more than we do. They have a plan, they know how to pace the team’s development so that it will peak towards the 2nd round. We’ve seen this happen in previous seasons, but many of us forget because we want the team to dominate early despite the number of rookies we have.

We’re starting to see that the plan is working. After a 4-game streak, they must be doing something right. And luckily for us, they didn’t listen to the criticism being levied against the team. They stuck to their plan. Today’s win shows how much they’ve been able to prepare the team. There were some early surprises, but they took the best shots UST could dish out, and came back. Franz and his coaches never lost their composure. And it rubbed off on the team.

The plan will not necessarily ensure a win on Sunday. But we can be sure that the team will compete. That’s enough for me. I trust that the coaches know what they’re doing.

  7. nel’s right. from game 1 till the end, ANIMO LA SALLE! :)

  8. The win today showed a lot about the team’s character. It showed a lot of poise and they proved that they can come back and win the game. Now it is up to us, supporters of the team to stop criticizing and have faith in our beloved school. Animo La Salle!

  9. DLSU basketball always peaked at the right time. I would rather have the losses in the first half rather the second half of the season. As Coach Franz aptly said “its not how you start the season, its how you end it.”

    ANIMO LASALLE

  10. … WIN or LOSE, still, ANIMO LASALLE! :)

  11. Someone must have been reading my posts and feeding it to the team. Look back on my previous post the “kish co, Hyram, Webb , Mangahas” scoring happened. Arvie bringas didn’t exactly do “40 points and 20 rebounds” but what he did last night was close enough. Peejay bailed us out with that 3ple to send it into 2nd overtime. But even if he did miss that, i wouldnt have felt bad with how we played. They played tough D and I mean tough. Khazim and Dylan were ineffective specially 4th qtr onwards. Credit this to how well we collapse in the paint when they drive. Although I think our freethrow shooting should improve,we didn’t miss in the 4th qtr (thank God) but overall our ft% was horrible. Oh and who’s the guy who poked Bringas’ eye?

  12. I finally attended a game in-person after 25-years away and what a game to be at! The cheering was excellent and I witnessed a young team mature right before my eyes! When they went down 17 points late in the second quarter, I could see the dispair in some of the people around me but I kept reminding them that you never lose a game in the first half and what’s going to matter is the second half. I’m glad to say that my prediction was right and it turned into an unforgettable event!

After the game, I was invited to the team dinner and got a chance to meet the young men who so gallantly held their ground and never gave up the fight even when they were down and being stomped on by a more-experienced team. What I saw were a group of determined athletes led by an experienced coaching staff that were riding a high and was determined to make the most of it the rest of the way. I commented to coach that it looks like all the hard work in practice was finally paying off and it was fun to see and he agreed.

  13. Well done! Even if we had lost, I was very happy with the way the team played. All heart and intensity. I think we’re now ready to give the Blue Eagles a good fight if nto a good spanking! ANIMO LA SALLE!

  14. Just listening to Kish and Hyram on 89.9. Kish admitted that the players had been receiving negative comments from fellow students after those 2 losses, but they try not to mind them. To the players, it is a big thing that the coach believes in and trusts them, and to them that was enough for them to continue to give it their all. That the coach continued to give them playing time despite poor play and errors was very important. They never lost their belief in themselves.

I guess this debunks the theory that what we say in cyberspace is being used by the team as inputs to their improvement plans. Constructive criticism, tough love, what-have-you, these were the justifications for voicing criticism of the players and the team. This showed very little trust in the coaches, that the coaches needed our advice on what was wrong and what they should do to fix things. Yes, venting frustration is ok, but let the coaches do their job and we should do ours – support the team.

That’s why the Gang Green has such a special relationship with the team. They provide unflinching and unconditional support despite the poor initial results by showing up in all the games. They too have been privately critical of the team, but continued to go and cheer them on. Out of respect, they never dared presume to tell the coach or the players what to do.

We all saw Peejay and Arvie turn to our stands yesterday and ask for support. That’s our job – support. Let’s allow them to play without any pressure from us supporters. They have enough internal pressure without us providing any more. Win or lose, they’re our team. The coaches have shown that they have kept the faith in their players. We can do no less.

  15. @James G
Your one of the chosen ones invited to the dinner after the game!
    What was that like?
    Animo LS!

  16. Very well said nel… I completely agree. Support the team all the way. COngratulations on the win over UST. Lets all support the team on August 9 lets shoot an ARROW to the EAGLES HEART.
    AN1MO LA SALLE!!!

  17. Hats off to Gang Green for keeping the faith and the team’s spirits soaring! It was great to see the energy displayed by the boys at crunch time. This is their breakout game. All the needed talent is in this Green Archer team. Now to sustain the energy and confidence. We look forward to seeing Arvie dominating the paint every game and Peejay hitting the treys.

  18. one of the best games that I’ve ever watched but it was a pain to watch those muffed free throws. credit goes to the entire team especially to arvie bringas, kish co and peejay barua.

it’s my first time to watch bringas in action. after watching the game, all i can say is: bringas IS the future.

    great game! animo la salle!

  19. There was a reason why Barua missed all of his 3-point field goal attempts and it was that shot which saved all the Green Archers. I was just watching at home and kept on saying when I saw the 3 point gap that Barua will shoot a 3 and it won’t miss. It was like a miracle shot when I saw it.

Bringas really deserves all the praises he has right now. He was like a monster. His 10 consecutive points really pierced the hearts of the UST fans. I really see a back to back championship AT LEAST in the future with these rookies who play way better than some veterans in the league.

Like what I had said before, Webb continues to shine. He was very excellent in the field and missed none of his shots. Truly deserves the most improved player award.

Hyram really was like jason kidd, keeping his cool dishing out the ball to the players who needs them. His 3 point shot was also noteworthy.

Kish Co really muscled out his way to the paint. He just showed pure hustle and that intimidated his defenders. He was as valuable as Bringas during the 4th and the OTs.

Bader was also awesome and I hope that he’s just ok with that arm. He had no turnovers and that’s very spectacular for a guard like him.

Villanueva really needs to practice some free throw shots. It could become one of his weak points. Instead of allowing him to shoot, players will just foul him instead because he can’t convert.

Atkins is a very nice defender but he should also be cautious about the injuries that might happen to him. There are “safer” ways of defending. :P

    ANIMO LA SALLE!!!

  20. Bringas, Marata and Banal will give La Salle numerous crowns in the future.

  21. no doubt la salle is always the protagonist-antagonist of the UAAP..hehe..we are hated by many and loved by everyone!

  22. @greenest
I was fortunate indeed to be invited to the post-game player’s dinner which was unplanned and a truly unexpected bonus. I returned to the Philippines after being away for about 25 years but it was special to still be remembered (and recognized) by many people, including some of the more active alumni when I arrived at the game. A couple of the alums extended the invite to me to join them in the player’s dinner after the game and I would have been a fool not to accept so off I went… I certainly don’t consider myself a “chosen” one but a fortunate one that evening…

The players arrived a little later after I did and not only were they pretty tall up close, but I realized truly how young these guys are! When Bringas came up I shook his hand and asked about if he got treatment for the bruise under his eye and he said it was looked at and he was just fine. Then I did something that I usually reserve for people I know a little better… I told him to his face that “Son, today you became a MAN out there on that court!” he sort of looked surprised to hear that but then he understood what I meant, nodded his head and smiled. This all-star high school kid has finally adjusted to the SPEED of the college game and once everything “slowed down” for him he got really comfortable and did what he got recruited to do – perform at a high level!

As the players sat down to eat, the game was being replayed on the TVs in the house so they all pretty much ate in silence watching a game they had just won. I did the same and the night ended without any further incident, I mean you could see the players and coaches were tired so when the game was over, they just pretty much left the home.

  23. Credits to Coach Franz, Coach Dindo, Jack Santiago, Tonichi Yturri, etc. for their hardwork and dedication.

  24. My question is, why is every basketball critic thumbing down our chances against ateneo this coming sunday? Didnt we beat them in the fil-oil tournament last april? Considering we didnt even have a bringas back then. fellow lasallians, it can be done !!!!!!
