Tale of the Tape: Eagles vs. Archers
As they say, all records are thrown away and all stats are disregarded, whenever the Ateneo Blue Eagles and this year’s defending champions, the De La Salle Green Archers play against each other. Winning is a matter of school pride. Numbers are forgotten.
Nonetheless, the stats are still important for the teams’ respective tacticians to plot the right offensive attack and to design the proper defensive stance. Six-time UAAP Champion coach Franz Pumaren and his 1989 Philippine Basketball Association Grandslam Coach, Norman Black, are both cerebral coaches and will definitely rely on the figures to devise the strategy for Sunday. Is outrebounding the key to victory? The stats will provide a clue. Will the bench play a significant role in claiming the win? Again, the stats may tell. We present to you the comparative statistics of the Ateneo Blue Eagles and the De La Salle Green Archers for the entire elimination round of UAAP Season 71 (taken from the Season 71 Senior Elimination Round Statistical Summary):

i just wanna remind everyone that in that first game against ateneo, we missed 16 free throws!!! we have to make our free throws to win. we won’t win if we shoot less than 50% from the foul line. not to mention the game started with ateneo leading 2-0 even before the jump ball. that first meeting was a game we should’ve won. about the second meeting, ateneo really played much better than us. they controlled the game from start to finish. for us to win the championship, we have to play smart, we can’t throw away the ball, all our players must contribute, we have to make our free throws, we can’t allow ateneo to get easy baskets, and we need tough defense from start to finish. defense wins championships. all our champion teams under coach franz played great defense. i know this particular team can too. i’ve seen glimpses of it in previous games. however, i haven’t seen them play great defense for 40 minutes. hopefully, i would get to see that nightmare la salle press again. i would get to see the defense that rattles the other team, the one that gets us a lot of steals which translate into easy lay-ups. i hope to see all these when we play ateneo on sunday. ANIMO LA SALLE!!!
