Postgame Bullets: DLSU 68 NU 48
Posted by GREENARCHERS.PH- Good solid game from the Archers resulting in that 20-point victory. It could have been a bigger blowout but Franz elected to tinker with his lineup.
- Defensive intensity was outstanding from the beginning, limiting NU to 4 points in the 1st quarter, 16 in the 2nd, 8 in the 3rd, before easing up and allowing the Bulldogs to score 20 in the 4th. Only Ponferada and Baloran managed to score consistently on plays in the paint with their teammates rendered ineffective by the stifling press and man-to-man defense of the Archers.
- The Archer lockdown defense forced NU into more than 32 turnovers as of the end of the 3rd quarter. The turnover story was not entirely one way. In the first half, the Archers had already tallied 15 turnovers according to the tv panel.
- The Archers were relatively effective on offense, averaging 19 points in the first 3 quarters before easing off in the fourth with the game already beyond recall.
- Marata scored 12 points, all on triples. Gab Banal also connected on his own trey.
- Yutien stole the ball in successive plays in the 4th quarter and scored on a nice side jumper to cap the sequence.
- Ever since the second match against FEU, the team has shown incremental improvements in all aspects of their game, but most strikingly on defense. They have now limited opponents to 65, 65, 63, 63 and 48. That's an average of 60.8. The offense has picked up, seems someone took the lid off the ring and our boys can now feel the shot go in as they take it. Not bad at all. When we play FEU and UE in the second round, they'll find that this is a different team.
- This win was in contrast to the Adamson game, which was tight for most of the game. The Archers sprinted to a 9-0 lead and never looked back. This was in contrast to their previous games where they trailed in the first quarter. Wonder what they had for breakfast? Maybe we should make sure the team has more of that whenever they have a game.

The game against UST is a different stroy(as being considered on other sites as the most consistent team in UAAP so far). I hope the intensity of todays game will be carried throughout the season(if not, more and more intensity). I like how the team improves(especially the revelation of rookies) every game. ANIMO!

July 30th, 2009 - 20:02
I love how the younger archers played today!! I believe Coach Franz is the best at mixing minutes and letting the younger ones gain experience in a UAAP game.
WOW! Gab Banal is really tall!! I think he just needs to bulk up some more and gain more confidence. My bet is, he’ll be one hell of an archer!! Gab will be really good next year, just keep working hard!!
Is it Jovet Mendoza? He has a lot of potential, I love his game so far! And they say he’s an NCAA Jrs MVP from NU? He’ll be good together with Bringas and Andrada!! 3 young BIG men in DLSU.. that’s a change!
Together with Marata and hopefully, LA Revilla! (any news about LA?) And correct me if i’m wrong, is Maui only playing in his second year? We got our future set! But hopefully, we can learn fast and make a run at the championship this year!
ANIMO DLSU!!

Obviously, we cannot please everybody with our comments. Some have the offensive minded team philosophy, others like the defensive teams.
It seems that Nel and I are on the same page though. I am an ardent believer in defense, and an even more passionate admirer of the La Salle defensive system.
What are the standings now? We, ladies and gentlemen , are in second place. Hold your horses though. We haven’t achieved squat yet. It’s too early in the season to see the complexion of the tournament.
One thing we do know this early though. We are now officially a UAAP basketball team. A contender at that.
If you remember some years back when Norman Black didn’t have his championships for Ateneo yet. He said “La Salle players change, but the team and the system remains the same”.
That is what defines La Salle basketball my friends. The system, not the individuals. Therefore, you do not always have to have a Ren-Ren Ritualo, a JV Casio, a Don Allado, or even a Jun Limpot during our early years. We have the system.
Now don’t misconstrue my motives. I am not shooting down anyone’s opinion here. I read a couple of comments that the best defense is a good offense. Well in history, we have events to support that. Let’s talk about George Armstrong Custer at Little Bighorn. Let’s talk about Napoleon at Waterloo. Lets talk about…. I’m just kidding, having some fun here. Let’s go to basketball.
In the NBA. Listen to the coaches. Listen to the players. Listen to the TV analysts. Time and time and time again, they talk about … you guessed it. DEFENSE.
With what is developing now, the players are beginning to believe that they have the offense. In the first two games, we averaged what.. 48ppg, while the opponents average around 65ppg. Right?
We are now shooting better than that. The boys confidence is picking up. They now know that they can score more than 48 points. HOW????
Our offense starts with our DEFENSE. That is the black and white of it. If we do not play this way, I guarantee you. We will NOT win the championship. Me may not even hit a 0.500 season.
Now, the game vs. UST is NOT a different story. Its the same. Again, its just a matter of defensive strategy. We know who we will guard on that team. Dylan Ababou, Camus, and Khasim, the Dream, Mirza. Wow!!! an imposing and complete frontline with inside and outside offense. Ababou scored 28 points the last game. But against Ateneo, what did he score??? He wasn’t in the star boxscores wasn’t he? Why was that???? Who stopped him? How was he stopped? I really don’t know but the magic word is he was STOPPED.
Let’s just trust the defensive specialists who can stop Dylan please. You stop him, you stop 1/3 of UST’s scoring don’t you? He scored 28 of the team’s 92 points vs. UST right?. About a third.
I’m not a know it all. I don’t even claim to be. What I know however, is that in all my years watching La Salle Basketball, I think I know what clicks for us and what doesn’t. It’s defense.
As always, I will end with this. We are all one team, one La Salle. We are not adversaries. Our opinions are placed here for anyone to digest, support, critique, or whatever.
I will always believe in our system. That is my stance. Animo!!!!

I agree with Proud Archer. We won’t be consistently successful if we engage our opponents in a shootout. Don’t get me wrong, we do have talented players who can put points on the board. And they will score. But so do the other teams. What sets the Archers apart from the other teams is the total commitment to defense over the years that forces the opponents to score less points than we do. Remember that the Green Archers practically popularized the full court press and trap as a key weapon in Franz’s first year, when no one was doing it. And they were doing it for 40 minutes, an unheard of strategy then. Remember also that our press and trap would stymie all our opponents, bar none. Today, all teams have their own versions of the press. And our opponents all try it on us, for a change, but never with the same ‘gulpi de gulat’ effect.
Unfortunately, defense isn’t interesting or sexy to watch, because it prevents points from being scored. As a side note, that’s why football has not been that popular here, because Filipinos like high scoring sports, and they want the instant gratification that comes from scoring. Defense lulls spectators to sleep (also why the defense-minded San Antonio Spurs are considered boring). But defense is probably the biggest challenge, because you plan to disrupt the plans of the opponents. Proud Archer can relate to this – I feel that the best bench strategists are like chess players because they think of moves and counter moves, and have backup plans in case plan A doesn’t work. It’s a thinking man’s game, and defense is the hardest to plan for because everyone else plans for their offense.
Successful defending also helps demoralize the competition – note the hangdog posture of the Bulldogs after the first half when they realized that they could hardly dent the impregnable defenses of the Archers after 2 quarters of futility. Failure to make much headway can sap the confidence and will of players, and increase their frustration and irritation. Good defending gets into the heads of the players more than any trashtalking will. Take the Bulldogs – after their will to resist was broken, it was scrub time which allowed Franz to tinker with his combinations. Our defense also creates our offense – how many points do the Archers score off turnovers, especially in the opponent’s backcourt? Those intercepts and steals usually translate into easy points on the break.
Yes, offense is catchy, attractive, and high scoring games look interesting to most. The high scorer is probably the most watched player on the court. And the defenders don’t get as much attention or glory. Everyone remembers Renren, Macmac, or the Ninja. Who remembers JR Aquino? He’s just one of the tough hardnosed Archer defenders who made things difficult for the opponents and helped our guys score. Not as popular as our scorers, yes? But without his defense, it’s doubtful if the teams he was on would have been as successful. It’s defense that has made the Archer game something to be reckoned with in the collegiate ranks year after year. Our players come and go, but the defense has been constant, and it’s helped make the Archers the most successful team in the UAAP in the last decade.

It was a nice game. I like it that the Archers concentrated on their defense. It was nice to see them play with intensity. I hope they keep this up and improve more in time for the remaining games. And I am excited to see how Marata will be in the following games. He’s really talented.
Btw, nice analysis and game comments here compared to other sites where some people talk nonsense in their comments. Good job to those who writes these articles here in this website.

Congrats Archers!!! maintain your intensity…always remember to surrender the “ME” for the “WE”..let us keep on winning to prove everyone WRONG!!! make it 4-2 on Sunday! and 5-2 in your last game..God Bless…
Great game Archers! MARATA was awesome!!!
Burn them in flames of GREEN AND WHITE!!!ANIMO LA SALLE!
July 31st, 2009 - 10:09
Another W for us.. the players had an excellent defense, they were all aggressive and all our shots was going in… Its nice to see that game after game our players are improving. I think its better if we always start Marata and Bringas since they were starters back fromm their Jr basketball days it will give them more confidence and most of all for Bringas to toughen up and be ready for Rabeh the king eagle. andrada is big too he just needs to bulk up but he is a good player, coach did not only think for this years season but for the upcoming season too. Our mens basketball team has a bright future ahead of them.. more championship… AN1MO!!! Keep the FAITH!!!
July 31st, 2009 - 10:21
Congrats to all of us! This is way better than expected:-) When the season started, I never thought I’d be excited. People thought were nobody this season, but they are wrong. More wins!

July 31st, 2009 - 10:55
Congratulations archers!! You definitely deserved the win.
Sunday’s game will be a totally different story. UST is a good team, with awesome rookies and a very versatile forward in Dylan Ababou. Hope we can pull it through in that game.
Animo La Salle!!!

Atkins actually hit his shots, it’s a miracle. He’s not as useless afterall.
Good performance by Marata. He should give some tips to Barua on how to sink threes.
Nice effort overall, but still rough around the edges. IF they play like they did here consistently, they may be on track for a surprise Final Four appearance.
July 31st, 2009 - 12:08
It’s a good thing that the people who state their opinions on this site are critical thinkers, giving La Sallians different views and angles on the game, which makes it more exciting and fun to watch!! Good job everyone!! Hope this continues!!
July 31st, 2009 - 12:56
It’s really funny how some insecure guests would repeatedly attempt to post trash here when they know very well (i assume they do) that all comments are subject to approval before they can be read/seen by the public.
Hey man, ever wonder why you get ZERO replies/reactions to your posts? Hello!!! no one can see it!!!
And after many attempts you still dont get it. Kinda stupid dont you think?
You’re probably drooling in disgust right now.
July 31st, 2009 - 13:03
Agreed. The approval process means that those posts deemed as abusive or offensive will never appear on the site. It’s amusing how they will repeatedly try to slip one past the administrators. Baka makalusot? As the song goes, “di na natuto”.
July 31st, 2009 - 15:50
good job Archers! Typicall La Salle game. hardnosed defense, dominating guards plays and tough in the froncourt.
keep it up! We can do it!
practice more, see you guys at sports complex.
Animo La Salle!

I’ll give you a little lesson of how to mix chess and La Salle’s defensive strategies. What is the most powerful piece on a chess board? It’s the queen right? She is also the most powerful at home, I tell you. Hahahaha giving away my henpecked nature?
Anyway, what is the optimum location on the chess board to place a queen? The answer is the center of the board. From here, her power radiates in 8 different directions.
At its original position at the start of the game (beside the king along the edge of the board, her power diminishes to 5 directions. The queen is weakest at the corners. It can only go three different directions.
So what the heck is he talking about, you may wonder. NOW lets go to basketball.
Our defense. What is its first objective? To steal the ball of course. Easier said than done. If you can’t steal it, what’s the second objective? To tap it out of bounds as often as possible. Why? Because when you tap the ball out, the inbounder can no longer traverse either the baseline or the sideline. Meaning, he cannot run in either direction. He will be called for travelling, unlike after a score, the inbounder can run along the baseline to find a passing angle.
So, given the queen’s power lesson, where do you want to tap the ball out to????? Answer. The CORNERS. Again why? Go back to the queen’s weakest position. Bet you didn’t know that there was a tap out strategy huh?
The ANGLES my friends. It gives us a greater chance to steal the inbound, because the angle to pass is limited, and gives time for our press defense to float around for a possible steal. Of course you know about the strategy of double teaming along the baseline, using the line as a third guard. Don’t you notice a third guard behind the two pressers? He is the floater. He is actually the one with the best chance to steal the ball, waiting for a weak or a badly angled throw. That’s called the trap.
I bet a thousand bucks you don’t watch basketball THAT way huh? I do. Isn’t that fun???
I don’t want to give away more. Of course coaches know this crap (sorry for that). Remember, defense is our key. If we can’t score, they can’t either if we steal the ball, rebound it, or tap it out of bounds in an unfavorable position. We are limited to only 40 game minutes, and the less time they touch the ball, the less time they have to score. In a game of ugly ball, guess who is king? Not the eagle. That my dear La Sallite’s is a glimpse of how coaches think, and how La Salle plays basketball. Animo!!!
