Mangahas stars as Green Archers goes to the Finals
The FEU Tamaraws thought stopping JV Casio meant stopping De La Salle. But they forgot about James Mangahas, and they paid dearly for that.
The three-year veteran forward scored 20 big points, including the final seven points of the Green Archers, and became the latest hero for De La Salle as the defending champions barges into the Finals of Season 71 of the UAAP Men’s Basketball Tournament.
With the Tamaraws ahead by one-point, 62-61, less than a minute left in the game, Mangahas converted on a Simon Atkins assist and completed a crucial three-point play, to put the Green Archers on top by 2 points, 64-62, 35 seconds left in the game clock.
FEU’s Mac Baracael had a chance to tie the ballgame anew after he was fouled by Rico Maierhofer but the FEU forward, who averages 71.4% from the free throw line, missed both charity baskets. Mangahas was fouled anew and split his charity baskets to give the Green Archers a safer three-point margin, 65-62
Trying to keep FEU’s finals hopes alive, Paul Sanga threw a three-point shooter, which bounced off the rim and Mangahas grabbed the all-important offensive rebound, his lone carom for the game, and sped his way to the other end of the court for an easy lay up which finally nailed the Finals slot for the Green Archers.
With the win, the Green Archers cemented their claim of being the most dominant UAAP basketball team as they will make a 13th finals appearance in 15 consecutive UAAP seasons, missing only in 2003 and in 2006, the year of the suspension.
The Archers will meet the league leader, the Ateneo Blue Eagles on Sunday for the first game of their championship series.

GO GO MANGAHAS…You re the MAN…..Great win Archers….we believe in you COACH FRANZ ..WOW 9th finals appearance of coach Franz in 10 years …….ANIMO LASALLE !!!!!!
Pwede ba makakuha ng tickets??? Id trade my replica maui roca jersey for a pair.
Congrats to us. This just shows to us the character which makes La Sallians champions not only in sports but in their respective fields as well.
where have you gone adonis sta maria?feeling ko durog frontline ng lasalle sa finals.pasok, gerwin gaco!
I just have a gripe..gusto ko lang malaman ng lahat that it broke my heart when is saw the recent poll on this site stating that if lasalle didnt have a game, which team would you rather root for…and behold, the top spot went to…The Ateneo Blue Eagles…HUH???ano na nangyayari sa mga lasalista ngayon? Why in Gods good earth would you ever think of rooting for Ateneo? They are the Duke Blue Devils of the UAAP, the team everyone loves to hate. My jaw dropped when i saw the results of the poll. Please tell me that im not the only one upset about this. I will now light myself on fire. We should all be ashamed of ourselves
keep the faith! go la salle!
walsham…pasok!!! ang drama mo naman.
I think we should credit Ateneo for a good season.
Tsaka, I think LA SALLE is the Duke Blue Devils of the UAAP. La Salle is the team everyone loves to hate.
umore,
Sorry medyo madrama eh.I grew up during the 2nd place finishes and heartbreak years of Telan-Lago-Webb combo. Kung madrama ako ngayon dahil sa sunod sunod na talo na naranasan ng Vergil Villavicencio coached teams noon. What makes it worse, the first year after i graduated, La Salle won it all! Talk about bad timing. Dapat binagsak ko muna ilang klase ko para tumagal tagal ako sa La Salle at nakatikim ng panalo habang studyante.
You really think LS is the team everyone loves to hate? Im probably biased.
congrats Green Archers!
any news about the tickets for the game on Sunday? My friend called ticketnet, wala na raw?! is this true? Gen Ad na lang daw e.
walsham….pasok!!! i share your sentiments dude. 4 agonizing years in lasalle, i remember how virgil villavicencio would react to every three point shot mark telan would take. i see the same in rico meierhofer! the wingmen then were alvin magpantay and tyrone bautista! the classic good old days!
you’re right walsham…pasok!!! it makes me so sick knowing some lasallites would root for ateneo. you have no right to be called real la salle basketball fans!!!
i remember getting patron tickets for game 3 of 99 finals against ust for only P750!!! for the information of those wanna be lasalle fans, 99 championship was the most memorable of all!!! it vindicated the heartache years of 94-97!!! S-U-_-_T pa ateneo noon!!! after that naki uso na ang ateneo sa uaap that’s why there has been a scarcity of uaap tickets. and this is also probably why the “wanna be lasalle fans” were born.
Bikoy,
Nice one! Green blood flows through your veins! The four nastiest words that anyone can utter “Mark Telan, for three???!!!” Napayosi tuloy si coach virgil sa court e. Ahah naalala ko yun! Everyone is so “lovey dovey, we are all one family” nowadays. Have you all forgotten the picture of Wesley Gonzales taunting a dejected Mac Cardona after Fonacier blocked his shot to win the UAAP crown. Now its all “lets all hold hands and cheer as one for the greater glory”? I say, lets throw all the goodygoody stuff out the door, represent and be proud you are a La Sallite and not an atenean. Save all the im proud of the ateneans accomplishments and they are a good bunch of guys for the chess meet. This is UAAP basketball, ANIMO!
saan pa kaya pwedeng kumuha ng tickets..i need two mga peeps…
thank you walsham…pasok!!!
i think i know you from somewhere! are you the guy who flirted someone whom you thought was a chick, but turned out to be from ateneo high school pala!!!! yiiiiikesss!!!
yup coach V nagyo-yosi during a timeout!!! the good old days!!! how about the elmer lago missed tip in during the 94 finals???? whatever happened to allen glen patrimonio????
can’t wait for sunday!!! it’s this time of the year again!!! pahirapan kumuha nang tickets!!! let the ticket hunting begin!!!
Bikoy
Pinaalala mo pa yun Lago tip out!!!putek ang sakit! Dont get your hopes up for tickets, us true fans are alienated by quasi-fans who are generally posers and who text and take pictures of themselves during games with their 8.1 megapixel cameras and fail to notice how intense the action on the court is. They have all the tickets and all they see during La Salle-ateneo games is a chance to be “in” and to look cool. I digress. Baracael Choker!
i was happy to see james mangahas play that way in the 4th quarter. i hope he can play at that level during the finals. we really need him to step up for us to be able to win against ateneo. we need good games from everyone. jvee should shoot well. rico should get the rebounds. simon and l.a. should control the tempo. james and barua should contribute well in offense. the rest of the team should just know their roles and play solid defense from the opening tip to the final buzzer. if this happens, we can beat this blue eagle team that demplished u.e. in the final four. besides that, here are some things we don’t need. we don’t need bader to keep jacking up three’s. we can clearly see that he can’t shoot well. it would be better if he just played solid defense on maybe chris tiu and then he can get some points on the fastbreak. we also don’t need walsham throwing up those jump hooks that he can’t make anyway. he should just sacrifice his body and give al-hussaini a hard time. we also don;t need rico to make stupid mental lapses like hanging on to the rim and getting silly technical fouls like he did in the adamson game. he should just focus on the game, use his head, get rebounds, and help jvee in the scoring. and last, we don’t need maui to get his shot blocked underneath. he should just kick the ball out if he’s being covered. ateneo’s defense underneath is solid. baclao is a great shot blocker and al-hussaini is just too tall compared to our big guys. we have a solid backcourt but our frontline is very weak. that’s why our bigs should make up for what they lack in talent with hard work, sacrifice and just play with a lot of heart. no easy lay-ups, no easy baskets for the other team. if they should foul, foul hard. can’t give away three point plays to ateneo. let’s face it, they have a more talented team, a taller team and a deeper bench. but we have the better coach and our guys have experienced winning the championship so they know how to play and win the big games. i believe our guys are capable of beating ateneo as long as they play hard, play smart and play like there’s no tomorrow. i am dreaming of another championship for our school and nothing is better than winning it against ateneo, especially now that they are the clear favorites. BEAT ATENEO, ANIMO LA SALLE!!!
Marts_Chua,
Di mo ba trip hook shots ko??? Idol ko si Jabbar pre! I touch the sky with my hook. Yeaahhh! Who are you to tell me that im not as talented as Sharma’s half brother?
Coach Franz,
Just give me a chance. Ill show you what i got!
PJ#11
Championship victory is sweetest if it is Ateneo that we beat!
An1mo La Salle!!!!!
let’s all do the happy hoffer!!
ok din yung contribution ni ferdinand last sunday. kahit pano malaking bagay yung 6 points niya since supposedly siya yung isa sa mga expected role players who will contribute but failed much of this season…
maui, sana konting tigas sa shaded lane and grab those rebounds…

rico, ingat sa fouls…the team needs you inside…
LA, take good care of the basketball and wag alanganin kung mag-drive…maliit ka pa naman and ateneo is big…
malabes, your shooting is needed…
GO, GO LA SALLE…BEAT ATENEO!
i hope walsham does a kish co in this year’s finals.
musta naman sa 2nd place?
I trust our team to do better on the championship games. We can’t deny the fact that Ateneo is just the better team this entire season but I won’t divulge further on that because I’m not a totally huge fan of the blue side. In fact, I despise them! Hahaha!
Our team should step up and use all the possible plays and defenses that we could do to outplay the other team. I believe that the Archers have one possible weapon to beat the asses out of Ateneo – the championship experience!!! =)
ANIMO LA SALLE!!!
@ walsham…pasok!!!
I agree with what you’ve said that there are a LOT of posers out there who are just trying too hard to watch a live game but doesn’t have any idea with what’s going on on the court!!! Tsk tsk!
kung nakayanan ang UE sa 14-0 last year…ATENEO PA KAYA!?
they’ve got the players.
we’ve got the coach, the experience and the team. AsAn ka pa!
@berde: don’t forget our CAPTAIN KING ARCHER! =)
GO LA SALLE! =)
Walsham pasok and bikoy… amen.
Pundit,
Eto, eagerly waiting to be crowned…AGAIN. Eh kamusta naman ang sumpa? 20 years between championships?
pundit,
Hindi namin alam ang pakiramdam ng 2nd place…ask mo sila chris tiu and the rest of the blue eagles sigurado masasagot ka nila…
kung sana ang tanong mo musta ang champion? chak masasagot ka ng lahat dito.
Ei Pundit, asa ka pa!
I see BLUE for the CHAMPIONSHIP!
green gossip
