UAAP Season 71: Archers settle for a tie for 2nd, battle FEU in the playoff.
Just like last season, the Green Archers seemed to want to go the hard way.
Bungling its chance to secure solo 2nd and the all-important twice-to-beat advantage, the Green Archers lost to the Blue Eagles, 65-57, at the final elimination game of the Men’s Basketball Tournament of UAAP Season 71 at the Araneta Coliseum.
The Green Archers will fight the FEU Tamaraws, who were earlier beaten black and blue by the UE Warriors, in a virtual best-of-three series. The Archers and the Tamaraws will figure in a playoff on Thursday (Sept. 11) to determine the 2nd placer and the holder of the twice-to-beat advantage, before facing off again in the Final Four. The team are even, as the Green Archers won the first round while the Tamaraws exacted revenge in the 2nd round.
The Green Archers shot only 33.8% from the floor against the Eagles’ 48.1%. More glaringly, the defending champions failed to capitalize on their strength from the three-point area, converting only 3 of the 23 tries for a 13% clip, a far cry from their 30% average this season in that region.
It was also an off night for JV Casio who was limited to only 5 points for the entire game and 0 in the first three quarters and 0 out of 5 from the rainbow territory.
The Blue Eagles had a strong start zooming into a 9-point lead at the end of the first quarter. They continued to pound the Green Archers in the 2nd, and ended the first half on top by 8 points.
After the half, the Green Archers tried to mount an offensive comeback via a 7-2 run anchored on the back-to back field goals, the last one being a triple, from point guard Simon Atkins. The mini-run saw the lead of the Blue Eagles dissipate to 3 points, 7:51 in the third. But the Katipunan-based squad countered with a 12-0 run, to seize their highest lead of the ballgame at 15 points, 3:23 left in the third.
Similar to their opening in the third, the Green Archers sizzled in the early minutes of the final quarter before it fizzled in the crucial stretch of the game. The stalwarts of Coach Franz Pumaren, who’s back from a coaching stint in Teheran, staged a 7-0 run to lessen the gap to only 6 points. The teams figured in a trade of baskets capped by Rico Maierhofer’s 3-point shot in the 3:35 mark that saw the Archers moving closer to the Blue Eagles, 62-57. But after Baclao made a jumper going into the final two minutes, the Green Archers again went on a shooting blank with Barua and Casio missing two crucial three-point attempts.
THE SCORES:
ADMU 65 – Al-Hussaini 18, Baclao 11, Reyes 10, Tiu 9, Salamat 8, Baldos 4, Escueta 3, Buenafe 2, Salva 0, Burke 0, Austria 0

That’s just nasty. Jayvee will never sell out. He wants the championship more than anyone in the league
Never in my whole will I ever think that JVEE will sell out. That’s not him…
As for the game yesterday…what I was afraid of happening unfold yesterday. We started slow…we were outplayed, out rebounded and I think we had 7 turnovers in the first quarter alone. It was so obvious that the boys were pressured. They were stiff and too tight.
While Ateneo’s offense was free flowing..ours was in disarray.
And just to remind you guys..It’s not just JVEE who had a horrible shooting yesterday…JAMES MANGAHAS shot 2 out 14 or was it 13? I am not sure…all I know he’s that he and JVEE only made two baskets.
Argh…there’s a lot to say about the game yesterday..but what good will it do? I am sure the Archers themselves would rather not dwell on this and focus on the game this coming Thursday.
I know that they will bounce back and take that twice to beat advantage.
Here’s a thought/possibility…” Yeah..Ateneo swept us in the elims…but don’t you think that it will be the sweetest when and if we meet them in the FINALS and kick their as*es!”
ANIMO!!
naka di na makuha ni jv ang mvp award. sayang
Please stop all these baseless accusations on our players. JV had an off-night period! Let’s just focus on our playoff duel against FEU on Thursday. Ateneo played well, we played bad. That’s it
yah. archer_fanatic is right.
cguro naman walang bentang nangyari last night.. ndi naman cguro magbabayad and feu… hehee..
malas lang tlga kahapon… sayang c bader, mjo ok naman pinakita nya kaso ndi msyado ngamit nung 2nd half..
sana bader sumaksak ka minsan, wag basta tira sa 3.. gayahin mo c barua.
kaya nyo yan, heart of a champ!
yeah i don’t think JV is the type of person who will sell out especially against ateneo.. Every shooter whether its JV or even Chris Tiu have their off nights. And I was able to talk to him a few months ago mga april yta and he was even the one who was telling me na “oo kaya natin mag back to back kahit wala na si TY at Cholo” so I know he’s not going to sell out.
yes i agree with francs. Poor Jvee, he slipped twice.
Bangon jvee!
You can actually see the look of disappointment on Jv’s face every missed shot he made…
Anyway, we can always stand up after a fall.
Animo La Salle!
It wasn’t a La Salle game. Anyway, let’s just beat FEU twice and it’s off to the Finals!!
ANIMO LASALLE!!!
Yeah! kaya natin magback to back. let’s keep the faith.
Babawi si idol JV! Good luck guys! Animo La Salle!
kayang kaya yan ni JVEE!!!
sana mag-MVP siya… ayokooooo ang kabilaaaaa… WAAAHHH
ANIMO LA SALLE!
Being La Sallians, we should know better than to accuse JV of game fixing. We should stick with our team through ups and downs. In the past games we quickly applauded JV for his stellar performances. But when we lost,we quickly throw the blame on JV, even to the point accusing him of game fixing. Completely unfair it is.
If we accuse our own players of game fixing, then how much more would others perceive our team? How much more would others see our school? That would give them the right to view our school negatively. It is either we support our team completely or we don’t. Come on people be a true La Sallian. Support La Salle with all your heart and remove all doubts.
Grabe yesterday. Hindi man lang tayo lumamang sa Ateneo. Sobra nadisappoint din ako yesterday. But that’s ok. The battle may be over but the war ain’t.
Go, La Salle!!!!
bobbie lou,
james mangahas had 0 out of 4, 3 pt. shooting and 2 of 4 in 2 point field goals.
off night talaga ng shooters ng lasalle, si barua 0 out of 2 sa 3-points, 4 out of 6 sa 2 pt FG.
It was a great fight. La Salle lost to a better team, no excuses. Now, it seems that we’re going on a much harder route to Championship. Why? One thing: The higher they fly, the harder they fall.
Defend the crown, Archers! ANIMO.
“It was a great fight. La Salle lost to a better team, no excuses. Now, it seems that we’re going on a much harder route to Championship. Why? One thing: The higher they fly, the harder they fall.”
Yeah Ryt!
and hindi importante kung talo tayo sa eliminations ng dalawang beses!…
just like last season…
2>14 – from UE?
1>3 – From ADMU?
but still who’s the champion?…
ang importante mag-champion tau!
Keep the faith!
animo La Salle!
Guyz,, let’s just believe in our team.. hnd lng tlaga araw ni jvee yun, & to think sa huling qtr. maliit lng lamang ng ateneo w/o casio’s help to his team,, wtf naging explosive c casio? aun! panalo na sana cla.. pro hnd nmn nla dpt manghinayang eh elims pa yun, d pa finals!
That’s not yet the best that the Green Archers ever played for this season, right?
Normally sagutan ng shots from both ends.. That is how I know how the Green Archers play over the years, they really kick-a*s, pero ngayon pag lumamang na yung kalaban, kinakabahan na ako..
Napansin ko lang during the last game pag hindi nakaka-convert ng shots, no one is there to do offensive rebounds that is why i question where the heck were the big guys to do the put backs? Instead they run like headless chickens.. Would it be nice to back-up the shooters, making sure that the ball gets in… malaking bagay din yun…
We believe in you guys..
YOU ARE THE DEFENDING CHAMPIONS!
DEFEND THE CROWN!
I honestly believe that Ateneo is the stronger team this year. We have to play our most perfect game against them to even have a chance at winning. Nothing less than our best will suffice. They’re just better the entire tournament.
BUT, I still believe we’re better when it matters. Maybe it’s blind faith, but its faith nonetheless, one I will keep forever. When the chips are down, the odds overwhelming, and everything’s on the line, I still bet the farm on La Salle.
ANIMO will PREVAIL!
God Bless us all who are faithful to the end.
I still believe that DLSU will win. I’m not talking about the game VS. FEU. Im talking about the championship!!!
Animo La Salle!!!
I don’t think that JV will sell the game. He’s not that type of person. ‘La Salle Pride’ is correct. Whenever something goes wrong, people blame it to whoever is responsible. As graceful La Sallians, we should just accept and embrace the reality that we lost. But don’t disregard the fact that the team played with all their heart just to play at least a good game. Try to place yourselves in their shoes. How would you feel if your fellow La Sallites don’t appreciate what you have done even if you gave your 100% on the game? It would be hurtful, definitely!
It was just a bad game for both JV and James. That’s it! They are just also human beings like us who have their own off days, for lack of a better term. I’m sure Coach Franz would do something about the weaknesses that was showed during the DLSU-ADMU game! I bet we’ll be more prepared to bring down the Eagles next time!
Keep the Faith!!
And good luck on the game on Thursday against FEU!!
ANIMO LA SALLE!!!
mananalo tayo…maniwala kayo
FAITH! =) Bawal ang pessimistic dito!
ANIMO LA SALLE! BEAT ATENEO!
bakit ba may mga taga ibang school na nakikisawsaw dito. kapal ng mukha. blue eagle daw! we’re gonna fry you all in the finals! fried chicken!
there can only be one.. uaap season 71 version.
