The View From the Armchair – Game 12 vs UST

On to the final 4. The Green Archers withstood the desperate attempts of UST to come back from a 3rd quarter deficit, won the 4th quarter shootout to prevail 78-69 to snuff out the playoff ambitions of UST. With the victory of FEU over NU in the first game, the final 4 cast was sealed.

The Archers jumped to a quick 5-2 lead with 2 quick undergoal stabs by Maui and a free throw by Joshua as the Archers pounced on 3 early turnovers by UST, but after a timeout, UST stormed back to take a 10-8 lead which they maintained until the end of the first quarter. The shaky start of the Archers was evidenced in the 7 turnovers in the first 10 minutes. However, our defense stiffened and held UST scoreless for the first 5:45 of the second quarter to grab the lead for good. The second quarter saw UST score only 9 points, miss all 3point attempts, while Joel, Sam, and Simon connected from beyond the arc; the 3point makes were the margin at the half, 36-27.

The 3rd quarter was more competitive, and in fact we were outscored by 2 points, 17-19 as UST finally connected on their 3point attempts, Bautista with 2 and Teng with 1. UST capitalized on our 6 3rd quarter turnovers for 9 points and 5 offensive boards for 7 2nd chance points to narrow the gap to 53-46 after 3 quarters. Two quick baskets by Joshua and a trey by Simon gave us a 12point lead at 60-48 before Camus finally scored his first points, but Joshua, Jovet and Maui combined to give us our biggest lead at 66-50. The closest UST would get was 73-67 before Joel and Simon finished off the wounded Tigers with free throws.

The Green Mind – Archers Make Tigers Meow!

The De La Salle Green Archers beat The UST Growling Tigers 78 -69 and assured itself of a slot in the Final Four. With their 8th win, they can no longer be overtaken by any other team. I predicted that they would need 8 wins to get to the Final Four outright and they did not let us down.

UST was no match for the Green Archers. Veterans Simon Atkins waxed hot with his 3 pointers and Maui Villanueva was all over the place and made some crucial baskets and fouls shots. The team as a whole was a thing of beauty to watch. Composure, composure , composure. They never panicked even when UST made mini runs to cut down the lead. As always the defense was their best offense. I counted at least 7 times that UST had to shoot in the last second of the 24 second clock. This just shows that they could not run their offense in the way that they usually do, Their big guns, Bautista, Fortuna, Teng and Camus were all duds since they could hardly get a shot up.

It was no dream! Ferdinand played his best game of the season and for that he deserves the biggest congratulations he can get. He scored 7 points, got a couple of rebounds and a couple of blocks. Let's forget the 4 missed foul shots and the 5 turnovers he had. He made up for it with his intensity and his determination to contribute. It was the first time that I saw that he was not intimidated by the opponent. The morale of the story is to play within your limits and you will succeed. I am glad Coach Dindo is giving him long minutes because we will need him when the Final Four comes.

Joshua Webb finally had his breakout game. This was also his best game this season. The main reason that he was so effective was that he was not dribbling the ball in but instead moving without the ball and finding his spot under the basket where he would get a drop pass and score. Also, he also was able to use his speed to get the fast break going,. This kid has both the talent and the pedigree to be a great player. I just hope he continues to do what he did today. Except for an ill advised 3-pointer, Webb had the best game i have seen him play.

Pregame: Green Archers vs Growling Tigers Round 2

No time to relax just yet! Though the Archers have a 2-game edge over the 5th place team, they still need a couple of wins to cement their position in the final four.

UST still has an outside chance for a semis berth. A La Salle win will eliminate the Growling Tigers from contention so expect them to pull out all the stops to keep their flickering playoff hopes alive.

Just like in the first round, the team again needs to effectively defend the perimeter and capitalize on their height advantage in the paint. The only thing they should not repeat is a letdown in intensity and focus especially down the stretch.

Last week’s game may perhaps be the Green Archers’ best all-around performance of the season. It was a win born out of sheer determination and hard work. If they continue to play at that level, they will be a dangerous team come the final four.

But for now, let’s take it one game at a time.

The View From the Armchair – Game 11 vs FEU

Guess who blinked in the crunch?

In a complete reversal of their first round match with FEU, the Green Archers slugged it out toe-to-toe with the frontrunners for 3 quarters, stayed within striking distance, then played lockdown defense down the homestretch to win comfortably, 80-66. Staring at a 3point deficit at the end of 3 quarters, 54-57, and facing the same team that exposed their inexperience en route to a come-from-behind win in 2 overtimes in their last encounter, the Archers dismantled the league’s best offensive machinery, holding them to almost 11 points below their average of 76.9 points.

With the win, the Archers improved their record to 7-4 and now have a foot in the door of the final 4. Team Captain Simon Atkins bucked a facial cut in the first half to spark the team in the second half, ably supported by rookies Luigi dela Paz and Oda Tampus who also finished in double digits.

For the second straight game, the Archers dumped 80 points on the Tamaraws, but this time we did it in 40 minutes. In contrast, FEU managed only 66 points, proof that it was our defense that was consistently good; they scored 68 against us after 4 quarters in the first round to force the first extension. This time, the Archers would not allow a repeat, clamping down on defense to hold the Tams to 9 points in the final quarter while scoring 26 to win pulling away. The superb team defense the Archers threw at FEU for 40 minutes reduced the Tams to a bunch of individualistic players, who still managed to score but only through their solo efforts.

What went wrong

Although the team played superbly, there are still some things that need fixing.

The team racked up 16 turnovers which FEU converted into 10 points. As the race to the final 4 gets tighter, every point could help determine the outcome of the game. The team can’t afford to give many freebies to the opponents. There were some oops! moments in the game, most notably when Jovet gave Ferdinand a facial as Ferdinand was setting up for a pick. Oda Tampus did have a great offensive game, but he will need to be much more careful with the ball. He usually operates inside the paint, does score, but tends to give back what he scores; yesterday he led the team in TOs with 4.

La Salle-Dasmarinas vie for UCAA semis berth

La Salle-Dasmarinas kept its solid mark in the 9th Universities and Colleges Athletic Association after posting a 2-3 slate at the end of the league's first round.Despite two consecutive losses to league-leading Olivarez College and Colegio de Sta Monica, the Patriots kept their hold of fourth spot in the team standings to move halfway into making the Final Four for the first time since 2005.

That was the same year when DLSU-D was able to gain a spot in the finals but lost in three hard-fought games to the Ronjay Buenafe-led Emilio Aguinaldo College. Prior to the start of the season, the Patriots got a significant boost when it was able to recruit scorer Marlito Escobal and big man Rudy Onde to banner the squad of long-time mentor Ephraim Serrano.

Escobal transferred to the Dasmarinas campus after playing a key role in San Sebastian-Cavite's two consecutive National Athletic Association of Schools, Colleges and Universities championships from 2008-2009.He was also able to gain a short stint with regional powerhouse M. Lhuillier Kwarta Padala Cebu Ninos during the latter part of the 2009 Liga Pilipinas Conference III where they won the championship via a convincing 21-game sweep.

On the other hand, Onde is somewhat of a prodigal son having played for the Patriots from 2006-2007 before opting to make a short stint with Jose Rizal University in 2008. He failed a chance to make it to the NCAA before resurfacing in Cavite.DLSU-D barged into the win column on August 18 when it blasted neighbors EAC-Cavite, 92-77, at the Technological Institute of the Philippines gym in Manila.

The Green Mind – David Slays Goliath

Posted by Tony L Atayde Jr

Many said it could not happen, especially after the devastating loss to Ateneo. Many doubted the capabilities of a young La Salle team against the league leading FEU. But this is basketball and anything is possible. Ask Ateneo after they lost to UE. Today David (La Salle) beat the hell out of Goliath (FEU) 80 -66.

The game started out tentative for both teams. La Salle started with their stifling defense while FEU stuck to their zone defense which La Salle has had a problem with. Ever since Adamson beat us with the zone defense, all the other teams have seen how effective it is in stopping La Salle. FEU did just that.

FEU ace RR Garcia waxed hot and started hitting 3 pointers that gave FEU a nine point lead. However, La Salle did not give up. Atkins, Vosotros, Tolentino Villanueva, Mendoza, Andrada, Paredes and de la Paz kept their composure and slowly trimmed the lead down in the 3rd quarter. Even after FEU's RR Garcia hit Atkins in the eye that required it to be taped, he just kept hitting those 3s.

Then Coach Dindo put in Tampus to guard FEU's RR Garcia. It was a move that proved to be the wisest decision of the game. The normally highly productive Garcia was held at bay by Tampus in the 2nd half, so much so that Glen Capacio decided to sit him down. To make matters worst, nobody from FEU took over what Reyes was suppose to contribute. Tampus did not just shine on defense, he also hit some clutch shots. The kid is going to be a star in the future. He has no fear and that was eveident in today's game.

No Kidding, Green Archers win big against league-leading Tams

With this morale-boosting 80-66 win over FEU, you can very well say that the Green Archers have already put the disappointment of last week behind them. Playing with renewed energy and focus, La Salle hung tough with the Tams for the first three quarters. And when the right moment came, the backcourt trio of Simon, Oda and Luigi delivered the knock out punch to hand the Tamaraws only their second loss this season.

It was not only a huge win but also a character win as well. Even when everyone thought FEU would pull away at one point after taking an 8 point lead, they were unfazed. The team showed grit and determination, they showed relentless defense and fluid offense for the entire game in contrast to the first game when they wavered in the endgame. FEU’s backcourt duo of Garcia and Romeo, after waxing hot at the beginning of the match were nowhere to be found in the payoff period. Yutien, Papot, Maui and Jovet outhustled the Tam’s big men and did a good job in controlling the boards.

Oda is slowly but surely coming to his own. He may have not topscored for the team, but his daredevil inside incursions ignited a run that enabled the Archers to finally take command of the game and pull away for good. He may just be the slasher-type guy this team badly needs. A Joseph Yeo in the making perhaps.

Props to Simon and Luigi for showing a lot of composure down the stretch. Their timely hits from the outside thwarted any attempt by the Tams to stage another late-game rally similar to their first round encounter.

As we mentioned in our pregame, the Archers can do great things this season with the right mindset. They have already shown that they can beat even the stronger teams. It’s no fluke, this team is for real. If they continue to play like this, we’re in for more surprises.

Boxscores:

DLSU 80 – Atkins 19, de la Paz 12, Tampus 10, Andrada 9, Villanueva 8, Vosotros 5, Mendoza 5, Tolentino 4, Paredes 2, Webb 2, Marata 2, Ferdinand 2.

FEU 66 – Garcia 18, Ramos 14, Romeo 11, Cawaling 8, Cervantes 7, Cruz 2, Sanga 2, Knuttel 2, Bringas 1, Exciminiano 1, Mendoza 9, Noundou 0.

Quarter scoring: 17-21, 34-38, 54-57, 80-66

DLSZ drops a close one to NU

The De La Salle Zobel Junior Archers dropped a close 45-43 decision over the National University Bullpups earlier today in the FilOil Flying V Arena in San Juan.

The Junior Archers abandoned their fastbreak game to slow down the tempo of the running Bullpups and their star slasher Roque Estoce. At the start, the Junior Archers were successful in doing so as they raced to an early 8-2 lead but once NU got back from their time out, Roque Estoce finally got his groove going by breaking DLSZ's pressure defense and dishing out assists to his favorite target Raphael Atangan to score 4 points in the quarter and to close in to the Junior Archers, 12-8.

The second quarter was not kind to the Junior Archers as they scored only 2 points. The Junior Archers still played slow, as well as NU but then the Bullpups were able to execute on their halfcourt game with Ralph Tansingco scoring underneath the basket and Atangan scoring via mid-range jumpers to finally give NU the lead for the first time in the game, 15-14 with 2:02 left in the second quarter. Nico Meneses buried a trey at the buzzer to increase NU's lead at the half, 18-14. Julio Roxas was the lone player to score for the Junior Archers.

NU's confidence to execute on the half court continued in the third quarter. The Bullpups ignited a 7-1 run led by Meneses, Estoce, and Jonel Parungao to give NU a 25-15 with under five minutes to go. Axel Torres converted on a running lay-up to cut the lead to eight, 25-17 with 4:57 to go in the third quarter. Mikee Capacio buried two consecutive triples to bring back DLSZ in the game and trail by just one, 28-27 before Atangan countered a trey of his own before the quarter ended still in Bullpups' favor at 31-27.

Pregame: Green Archers vs Tamaraws Round 2

    Posted by GREENARCHERS.PH
 Email This Post 8 Comments

After being severely beaten by Ateneo in their last outing, La Salle will face another formidable foe in FEU tomorrow. What better way to bounce back from a horrendous performance than to score a win over the league leading Tamaraws whom they almost upset in their first round encounter? During that game, the Green Archers led for most of the way only to falter in the closing minutes in regulation, and they eventually succumbed only after dragging the heavily favored Tams into double overtime.

The team has shown that they can stand toe-to-toe with the UAAP’s best if they put their mind into it. Unfortunately, such confidence was absent last Sunday when the Archers played their worst basketball so far this season. Slow start, falling behind big early, and unable to mount a sustained comeback, it was like watching their losses in the preseason. If they want to get back in the groove of things, the Archers need to regain the same fire and composure that has allowed them to already surpass last year's performance.

It will again be a battle of youth vs experience. Our backcourt will have their hands full against the explosive duo of Garcia and Romeo. Expect a lot of physicality underneath with FEU having the advantage in heft and height. Our shooters, particularly Sam need to regain their touch from the outside if we stand a chance to defeat the Tamaraws. The zone has been the teams’ Achilles heel so they need to do well from the perimeter.

Last Sunday’s debacle is history. And if you think about it, put it into the proper perspective, that was just one game. Bragging rights don't count in the W-L columns, either. So the Green Archers should recoup and set their sights in making a strong push to the final four. After all, when the ball is tossed to start the game tomorrow, the score will be 0-0, and there will be 5 Tams on the floor, just like our starting 5.
